OK, can we talk? An earthquake ravages his country and Dan only misses Saturday of training! Dude, intense! (Especially given you don't have hot water for a shower!)

Would love to hear about the state of things in your area when you get a chance. Did you get a lot of damage? Do you have power?  Food? Clean water? What's your take on the nuclear reactors (or is that way too big of a topic to discuss here)? We keep seeing unreal videos of the tsunami, seems there are more released each day. It's still so hard to fathom the scope of things from where we sit.

To keep this, um, tri related, good job with the workouts!!!!

And Steve, Julia, and Ryan, have a blast tonight. Sorry to miss you guys. May the squalls pass you by as well (there's a doozy going on at my house as I type this!)!!

I'm not sure what the TV is showing you guys, but Sendai is a fairly spread out place.   I guess you are seeing what happened to the port area of Sendai and that they are lumping all the other coastal cities and villages under Sendai.   Our cable started working yesterday and I'm getting to see everything I heard about on the radio.  It is truly staggering and sad.

We are fortunate to live in the northwestern most part of Sendai and are about 75 meters above sea level.   As the crow flies, we are 11-12 miles from the coast and the tsunamis did not affect us at all.    Our water was out for 2 days and our power was out for 3 days. That cold water shower a few days back was not something I want to repeat and thankfully the power came back on the next day.

I'm trying hard to keep the workouts going.  They help keep me get rid of some of the stress from the aftershocks, thinking about the nuke plant, etc.

I promise to provide more details tomorrow about life in general.

Thanks Dan for the update.  It is interesting to have someone on the "inside" of the situation.  I have seen plenty of pics and I'm sure there are places that are just awful and the damage unimaginable.  But I am very leary of the media.  They love to harp on death and destruction.  I have watched very little live coverage and tv media lately.  I've had a hard time in the past dealing w/ natural and man made disasters that get repeated over and over again on the news.  I will continue to hope and pray that Japan recovers as quick as possible and keeps those reactors under control.

Stay safe and feel free to use us as some stress relief.  We can always get John to say something funny or post some tri porn!

I am not racing, but I am volunteering on behalf of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at the Tobacco Road Marathon on Sunday. I ran the marathon last year and wish I was running the half this year. With my bursitis issue this was not to be. However, I do get to support the others and I know one of our own MG members is running the half, and supported me last year. My turn to return the favor.

I know at least one of us (SAM!) is really excited for the weekend to get here!!!! If you're racing, spill the details!

If you're not racing, tell us the mental strategy you use to get through those really long or grueling workouts.

ME ME ME!!!!!   I'm running the Tobacco Trail half marathon.  Originally I was just planning on cruising but since my TT test last week my coach gave me a time goal.  Damn!   Actually I'd like to see if I can hit it.  There are pace groups available so I might jump in with one of those.

Good luck to everyone else.

Erica, huge congrats in the pool.  That's great!!

First HIM this Sunday!!!!

I'm as ready as I'll ever be.  I'm still trying to get me arms around pacing & timing strategy.  I really won't know how my legs will feel by the time I start my run come race day... I may be reaching with a 2:05 run split...

Good luck to all the other racers!!!

No racing this week but I am also this weekend at the prospect park duathlon... ok maybe its not fully volunteering because I was enticed volunteering ed by a free registration to one of the race organizers race which happens to be my 1st planned race.

As far as mental strategy, i came upon one yesterday when i didn't feel like swimming, i told me self its easier to quit because of the instant satisfaction but its temporary, finishing provides longer gratification. And then also telling myself that nothing lasts forever, races, or workouts

Good luck to Bryce, John, Jarrett, Sam, Tracy and Tuffli! I'm looking forward to reading some race reports!

Erica - congratulations on the breakthrough swim!

Dan - I'm glad you have good access to the news again. I'm very worried about the nuclear plant, so I'm relieved that you're able to follow the news and keep yourself safe.

No racing for me this weekend, but I get to run a long run on Friday with Kyla, Steve, and Ryan! It was a real treat to run with Steve and Ryan and their friends at Cougar Mountain yesterday. It's a beautiful trail, and a really nice group to run with.

As for getting through long workouts, I break them up mentally like Kyla does. The main challenge for me on the longer workouts is that I lose interest after awhile, so I've learned to start out with the mindset that I'll be out there X hours, and then I'll be done. Somehow that helps.

Yes I do believe I have a race on the schedule this Sunday.  So now is the time to put up or shut up.  I've made no secret that I'd like to BQ.  Am I there yet?  Hmmm, not sure.  I'll know around noon EST.  I had a good meeting w/ my coach on Monday and he was satisfied.  He's defintely a believer in less is more camp esp for early spring races.  Good quality, key workouts.  So we'll see how that goes.

Over the moon goal - 3:45 (even if that only gets me a "you qualified for Boston but it closed before you sign up" pat on the back).  I can at least know that I qualified.
Happy goal - under 4 hrs.
Over 4 hrs and I'll be disappointed.

I've got a plan.  I've got my secret go to poly juice if things start to fall apart. I've got my inspirational dig deep mantra to call on when things really start to hurt.  I'm ready to go.  Let's Rock 'n Roll!!!!!!

Good luck Tracy, John, Jarrett, Tuffli, Bryce and anyone else racing this weekend (in case I missed you).  Have fun and stay strong!  Remember pain is only temporary - at least that is what I'm going to tell myself.  ;-)

Good luck for everyone racing this weekend...

Sadly I am still far out from running. I feel like I could but PT says no... so the answer is NO...

But Got the bike out on Monday and going to go home and get the bike out again tonight seeing it is sunny and warm here. By warm I mean 45-46 Degrees F.

I am sure it will be 42 by the time I get home.

A girl that I helped learn to run in the fall came out to swimming last night with me after months of talking her into it. I will convince her yet to do her first Try a Tri this year.... WOOOOOT.... Slowly winning her over.

If any of you have experience with setting up training plans, I would really appreciate your help!  I can't figure out how to set something up for the next month, and I haven't found much help on the internet.  Aquabike training plans, apparently, are not popular!  I tried BT's custom plan (on Ryan's account), but it's not very helpful to me if I'm not training for a tri, and the minimum plan is 6 weeks anyway.  Any thoughts are mucho appreciated!

seriously though. If you are only able to swim and bike right now, I would just work around whatever schedule you can.

I don't think you can over-swim right now. 2 or 3/ week. Incorporate some drills.

2 or 3 good bike workouts/week would definitely keep up your fitness as well.

Hey everyone, remember me?  Sounds like people have been training hard and getting ready for races this weekend or very soon.  Good luck to everyone that is racing.  I can't believe race season is already starting or is about to.

Sorry, looong post ahead..

I just got back from Asia (again)..  First trip, went to a great wedding with the family that involved two countries (Hong Kong and Thailand), trains, planes, boats and an elephant, it was a fun adventure.  The 3yr old son really liked the elephant.  2nd trip business and entertaining potential partners and clients.  Asians drink a ton..

Haven't trained much.  Did the stupid thing and played basketball during the off season and it's caused 2 major injuries that is causing major problems with training.  Hyper extended my left shoulder in Oct and didn't let it properly heal and developed tendinitis in the left shoulder and then I severely re-aggravated  my PF in my right foot by landing hard and flat on my right foot that caused my entire foot to swell-up and turn black and blue along the PF (the exact same way i initially injured it 5 yrs ago).  I rested the shoulder for several months and went to a PT, ART specialist and acupuncturist and just started to swim again 2 wks ago.   It still hurts a little when I swim, but feels pretty good.

The foot on the other hand has been bad, i let it rest for a few weeks to the point were it feels good walking and lifting off the toes but when I run, the length of the pf starts to hurt again and I can't walk on it for a few days.  It's been going on like this for over 3 months.  The PT and ART guy worked on my PF as well but they said I should see a podiatrist to make sure nothing more serious is going on.  So i just got back from the podiatrist and needless to say now i'm in a foot cast for the next month.  So basically over the last few months, a lot of what I was doing to relieve the stiffness and pain on the foot was making it worse, since my PF is due to a tear/stretching caused by a hard sudden impact several yrs ago and again few months back and not from gradual wear and tear, the treatment is totally different.  The massaging with the golf ball and ice water bottle was making it worse and not letting the injury heal.  He gave me 2 options, I could receive weekly injections of steroids to reduce the swelling and stiffness so I can continue to train and during the next off season properly heal the injury, something he didn't recommend at all since he's not sure if I could run/train any extended period of time or distance with the injections since I'm already having problem when I run once and rest a week.  Or immobilized the foot completely and heal the injury now and train again in 4-6 wks.  Obviously I took the later, since I'm already out of running shape and I just got back into swim shape.  BTW I missed swimming so much..  So lesson learned, don't do something in the off season that would ruin the start of the season or overall season.    Now the only training i can do is core and left leg drills on the CT bike (my weaker leg).   On the bright side, maybe i'll get a more efficient pedal stroke.

Off to Asia again in 2 wks, this time to Singapore.

Dan glad to hear you're ok.  I can't imagine the stress you must be going through.  Everyone in Japan must be on pins and needles.  god bless the guys trying to work on the nuke plant.
