Stan, glad to hear from you and sorry about the injuries.  I agree that taking the proper amount of time to let injuries heal properly is the best way to go. You want to save your body for the long haul, not just a racing season.  Just think of how much free time you'll have to goof around on BT?  And I'll be you'll develop a killer set of abs!  Photos please. Kiss

Hey everyone, remember me?  Sounds like people have been training hard and getting ready for races this weekend or very soon.  Good luck to everyone that is racing.  I can't believe race season is already starting or is about to.

Sorry, looong post ahead..

I just got back from Asia (again)..  First trip, went to a great wedding with the family that involved two countries (Hong Kong and Thailand), trains, planes, boats and an elephant, it was a fun adventure.  The 3yr old son really liked the elephant.  2nd trip business and entertaining potential partners and clients.  Asians drink a ton..

Haven't trained much.  Did the stupid thing and played basketball during the off season and it's caused 2 major injuries that is causing major problems with training.  Hyper extended my left shoulder in Oct and didn't let it properly heal and developed tendinitis in the left shoulder and then I severely re-aggravated  my PF in my right foot by landing hard and flat on my right foot that caused my entire foot to swell-up and turn black and blue along the PF (the exact same way i initially injured it 5 yrs ago).  I rested the shoulder for several months and went to a PT, ART specialist and acupuncturist and just started to swim again 2 wks ago.   It still hurts a little when I swim, but feels pretty good.

The foot on the other hand has been bad, i let it rest for a few weeks to the point were it feels good walking and lifting off the toes but when I run, the length of the pf starts to hurt again and I can't walk on it for a few days.  It's been going on like this for over 3 months.  The PT and ART guy worked on my PF as well but they said I should see a podiatrist to make sure nothing more serious is going on.  So i just got back from the podiatrist and needless to say now i'm in a foot cast for the next month.  So basically over the last few months, a lot of what I was doing to relieve the stiffness and pain on the foot was making it worse, since my PF is due to a tear/stretching caused by a hard sudden impact several yrs ago and again few months back and not from gradual wear and tear, the treatment is totally different.  The massaging with the golf ball and ice water bottle was making it worse and not letting the injury heal.  He gave me 2 options, I could receive weekly injections of steroids to reduce the swelling and stiffness so I can continue to train and during the next off season properly heal the injury, something he didn't recommend at all since he's not sure if I could run/train any extended period of time or distance with the injections since I'm already having problem when I run once and rest a week.  Or immobilized the foot completely and heal the injury now and train again in 4-6 wks.  Obviously I took the later, since I'm already out of running shape and I just got back into swim shape.  BTW I missed swimming so much..  So lesson learned, don't do something in the off season that would ruin the start of the season or overall season.    Now the only training i can do is core and left leg drills on the CT bike (my weaker leg).   On the bright side, maybe i'll get a more efficient pedal stroke.

Off to Asia again in 2 wks, this time to Singapore.

Stan: really sorry to hear about your injuries.  I can relate to the PF, although I did not tear anything.  I tried steroid injections and within a couple of runs was right back in pain.  What ultimately worked for me was prolotherapy.  It took at least 4 sets of injections 4 weeks apart to be completely healed.  I took two weeks off running and when I resumed I taped for every run and at night.  I did that for almost two years....It worked, but not without a lot of pain along the way.

PS.  That boot can really mess with your gait.  Be careful that too much compensation doesn't hurt the good side of your body.  Been there, done that too.

SoccerGK - 2011-03-16 2:19 PM If any of you have experience with setting up training plans, I would really appreciate your help!  I can't figure out how to set something up for the next month, and I haven't found much help on the internet.  Aquabike training plans, apparently, are not popular!  I tried BT's custom plan (on Ryan's account), but it's not very helpful to me if I'm not training for a tri, and the minimum plan is 6 weeks anyway.  Any thoughts are mucho appreciated!

Hey I feel your pain. I am still not running. But I was inspired by my work out buddy dropping off a triathlon magazine that had an article about a Pro Triathlete suffering from an injury and not being able to run or Ride. She Swam 6 days a week eventually added some light spinning and built up her spinning, but continued to swim 5-6 days week. In the end when she came back to running that summer she set her PR in 10K running race, Sprint Tri and HIM. She kept her cardio up with mostly swimming alone. It was interesting to read that she was able to not only keep up her Cardio she was able to improve.

This has kept my head straight while not running. I was not able to pick up more swim nights. But I was able to extend my swims to 90 mins. I almost found a place near work to get in a couple of 40 mins swims.. but with the weather and my knee showing some signs of improving I have been able to start biking again.  But this is WEEK 4 of no running. I suspect I am 2-4 more weeks out at least as well..

Keep your chin up.. Grab some extra swims if you can.

I know at least one of us (SAM!) is really excited for the weekend to get here!!!! If you're racing, spill the details!

If you're not racing, tell us the mental strategy you use to get through those really long or grueling workouts.

It is finally here the Gator Half. My wife and I flew into Florida yesterday met up with my folks. Today got in a 6mile run and finally my 1st open water swim in the gulf went better than I thought except for the salt.

what help me during the long work outs was the money I already forked over for the entry and flight and equipment. Also I new if i didn't prepare correctly to the best of my ability I would just be wasting the cash. other than that just shear mental stuborness.

Stan - Sorry to hear about the injuries.  Wishing you a swift & full recovery!

BTW - PM me if you need any info for your SG trip or if you have time for a beer.  I'll be in party mode after Sunday.  Next big race isn't until Aug!

Finally getting a chance to get online after a very long day, including a piano lesson and some american idol watching.

Not racing this weekend, but GOOD LUCK to Sam, Tuffli, Bryce, John, Jarrett, Tracy, omg, so many racers!!!!  Love it.  Sorry if I missed anyone but thanks to you guys volunteering, too!

Congrats on your great swim, Erica!  4 or more times a week of swimming sounds like great gains can be made!  Not to mention building up core strength in the pool!

Stan-so sorry to hear about your injuries...good that you are taking the "big picture" view.

Linda (velcro), did you see that huge sinkhole on Highway 1 at Hurricane point???  Wonder if they can fix that in time for Big Sur?

Was thinking about getting through long, grueling workouts and my method is to break it up into pieces (kind of like Kyla), if I think of my 3 hour run this weekend as a 3 hour run or a 20 plus mile run, it is way too daunting.  I just think about getting myself up and enjoying my 10 minute warm up because once I get started, I figure, I can't turn back unless I am injured.  Then the next 5 minutes before I can sip at my water bottle, then 30 more minutes and I get to have a gu, etc...I love my garmin time alert that goes off every 15 minutes, because it signifies a nutrition alert, and it breaks up the monotony.

Tracy, I love the way you used the word Bumber.  It made me smile.

Not sure how he got the yellow/green eyes to match her shirt.  My kids got green milk this morning, too!

Of course, all I notice is the really dirty carpet.  Oh well that is what happens when you choose b/t a workout and housework.  There really is no contest!

OK, can we talk? An earthquake ravages his country and Dan only misses Saturday of training! Dude, intense! (Especially given you don't have hot water for a shower!)

Would love to hear about the state of things in your area when you get a chance. Did you get a lot of damage? Do you have power?  Food? Clean water? What's your take on the nuclear reactors (or is that way too big of a topic to discuss here)? We keep seeing unreal videos of the tsunami, seems there are more released each day. It's still so hard to fathom the scope of things from where we sit.

To keep this, um, tri related, good job with the workouts!!!!

And Steve, Julia, and Ryan, have a blast tonight. Sorry to miss you guys. May the squalls pass you by as well (there's a doozy going on at my house as I type this!)!!

I'm not sure what the TV is showing you guys, but Sendai is a fairly spread out place.   I guess you are seeing what happened to the port area of Sendai and that they are lumping all the other coastal cities and villages under Sendai.   Our cable started working yesterday and I'm getting to see everything I heard about on the radio.  It is truly staggering and sad.

We are fortunate to live in the northwestern most part of Sendai and are about 75 meters above sea level.   As the crow flies, we are 11-12 miles from the coast and the tsunamis did not affect us at all.    Our water was out for 2 days and our power was out for 3 days. That cold water shower a few days back was not something I want to repeat and thankfully the power came back on the next day.

I'm trying hard to keep the workouts going.  They help keep me get rid of some of the stress from the aftershocks, thinking about the nuke plant, etc.

I promise to provide more details tomorrow about life in general.

Thanks Dan for the update.  It is interesting to have someone on the "inside" of the situation.  I have seen plenty of pics and I'm sure there are places that are just awful and the damage unimaginable.  But I am very leary of the media.  They love to harp on death and destruction.  I have watched very little live coverage and tv media lately.  I've had a hard time in the past dealing w/ natural and man made disasters that get repeated over and over again on the news.  I will continue to hope and pray that Japan recovers as quick as possible and keeps those reactors under control.

Stay safe and feel free to use us as some stress relief.  We can always get John to say something funny or post some tri porn!

As I mentioned above, we were very lucky to have both our water and power back so quickly.   There are still lots of people living nearby who still don't have water.  Unless you experience that you can't imagine how inconvenient it is.  Not having working toilets for two days was tough.

Food: my wife happened to go shopping the day before the quake and she happened to pick that day to stock up on a bunch of things - partially luck and partially due to the fact that she had rotator cuff surgery a few months back and I've been doing a lot of the shopping on an as need basis.  Anyway, we have been eating/drinking almost normally to date.  My wife's sister and husband live next door to us and they also had a good supply of food/drink on hand (drink = alcohol by the way).   Supermarkets did open a couple days after the quake, but they sold what they had in stock out in the parking lot.  They created grab bags of food in several different categories (dairy, meat, etc.) and allowed shoppers to buy one of each.   The lines at those stores were long and slow.  I'm glad we didn't have to go that route.     At least one of the supermarkets announced today that they were opening from 9-5.  I'm not sure what that means yet, but I know better than to try to find out on the first day.   It is an indication that supply chain is starting to work again.   Unfortunately, the earthquake and the nuke plant problem have triggered horde type behavior in Tokyo.  I wonder if CNN is covering that aspect of the situation.

Gasoline: we had about a quarter tank in each of our cars and we've done very little driving since the quake hit.  The lines at the gas stations are about a mile long.  They limit the amount you can buy and the people start lining up early.  When the gas runs out, those still in line are just out of luck.   Stations don't stay open for more than a day and I guess there must be some leak from the staff that triggers the first cars to line up.  The other lemmings join the queue.   Today's news showed gas arriving at one of the ports not far from here that was trashed by the tsunami.   Great news that they got it working on at least a limited basis already.

Kerosene: lots of people use kerosene for heating including us.  It fuels our floor heating and also our hot water heating.  We had about a half tank (100 liters) after the quake.  We reduced our hot water usage to a minimum and also started using a couple of electric space heaters we had.   The house has been in the 40-50 degree range for the last couple of days.   Our kerosene supplier topped off our tank sometime this morning and we noticed this afternoon when my wife found a bill in the mailbox.   That was a pleasant surprise as I thought it would be another 5-7 days before we would see any fuel.   Our contract with the supplier is such that he checks and fills once a week and bills us once a month.  I guess that contract put us on the preferred list.

Nuke plant: we're 65 miles away.  I'm not happy about that and I was not impressed by today's attempted water drops from the helicopters.   It looked like the equivalent of a kid trying to put out a forest fire with a squirt gun.  Hopefully, their water cannon attempt will be more effective.   I wish they had been more proactive with the whole mess.  Every action they've take has been reactive.

All for now...

Good luck this weekend to all you racers.

Happy St. Patty's Day everyone!!!

I will be celebrating today by going to the dentist!  It seems as though every single St. Patrick's Day, I have a doctor's appointment (well, last year the dog had one instead of me, so I counted it), so I'm just keeping with tradition.  The other tradition is that I make Ryan green banana nut chocolate chip muffins to take to work.  I'm not wearing green yet, but don't worry, Nadie is!

I also swam again this morning, and while I'm very excited to have gone as far as I did and be SOMEWHAT comfortable, I'm still mad at the lifeguard who showed up to open the pool 10 minutes late, so I was .02 miles from my goal.  As it is, I swam RIGHT up to closing time at 7am.  I'm getting more and more comfortable with longer sets though.  I can hit about 250-300 meters before I start getting tired, so I have a long way to go still!

Dan - You pretty much rock.  I'm glad you're doing well!  Please keep us updated on what's going on over there.

Thanks for the update, Dan. Good to hear how things are going. I was talking with a friend yesterday who is a physicist (nuclear physicist, perhaps?!) who, before he was retired, specialized in disaster preparedness and reaction. His take on the nuclear situation is that it should be no worse than Three Mile Island which did not product any uptick in cancer over the last 20(ish?) years. He was talking way over my head eventually, but it was reassuring to hear him talk. Not so sure I'd still feel reassured if I were anywhere near there, however.

Funny story re: earthquakes and alcohol. In '89 I lived in the Bay Area and was at my bf's house in Sunnyvale when the Loma Prieta earthquake struck. (I was waiting for him to come home from work so we could watch the World Series -- Giants and A's!) At his house there was not any major damage, and he lived with 3 other 20- and 30-something guys. I kid you not, the biggest concern was how we were going to keep the beer cold. We set up a party in the front yard, blasting tunes from the car stereo, and just drank the night away. I was living at home at the time and was happy to have a "pass" to stay at bf's house as he insisted it wasn't safe to drive. Ha! I lived 2 miles away and the roads were fine, but it was a good excuse. Poor Dave was living in the Marina (fires) and had a nasty commute home that night...
