axteraa - 2013-04-18 6:21 AM Does anyone have big (or not so big) plans for the weekend?  I'm hoping to get some outdoor rides in - weather for Saturday is a bit sketchy right now with rain and winds of 50 km/hr gusting to 100 Undecided.  Sunday is looking decent though.  Also doing the masters swim meet on Saturday night which should be fun.

Going to be a big volume weekend for me as I'm in the last build of HIM training.  Likely a 70 mile ride with a 1k swim Saturday, and a 13.5 mile run Sunday.  It'll be my longest ride of the year, and I've only ran that far this year once (but felt really good doing so).

Out of curiosity, why such a long run after the long rie the day before?  Any concerns recovery wise?

Not Jason, but for several weeks before my HIM I'd do 60-80 mile Saturdays, then 12-16 miles Sundays, with about 3500 in the pool or OW after that.   Mondays were hard but getting 2 hours to run during the work week is hard

Going to be interesting seeing reports of just how flooded everything is and how high the main rivers go around here as all the tributaries unload. Saw small local lakes up higher than I can remember. Only a little flooding onto the roads for me, but have seen complaints of worse elsewhere. Some people wondering how roundabout they'll have to go to get home. Saw some "No Wake" signs, along the road. And they're probably warranted. A number of schools closed due to flooding. Can't remember that happening. One of the schools Masters is at had 4 ft of water in the basement this morning. Not sure if it went up during the day.

I'm flying into O'Hare tomorrow and heard parts of Term3 had flooded.

I'm hoping for 80 mile group ride on Saturday. My son doesn't have soccer games until the afternoon.

On Sunday, I am toying with the idea of doing a Splash N Dash in Tempe town lake. It's been a couple of years since I swam open water with other people. The problem is that I also forgot that I ripped my wetsuit 2 years ago (haven't looked at it since). I tried my husband's but it's way too big around the shoulders and under arms. I have an old sleeveless suit but the water temp is 66 degrees and I'm a cold water weenie. I might just HTFU and do it.

That's just standard training for me.  Long rides on Saturday, long runs on Sunday.  Believe it or not, but I actually feel the best on Sundays and my long run is usually the fastest run of the week for me.

Several factors.

1.  M-F I'm usually doing 2x workouts a day (morning and evening).  So recovery period is around 12 hours between workouts, and as the week wears on, I get a little more tired since there is some high intensity bike workouts in there.  However, Saturday I usually do the long ride in the morning (sometimes followed by a swim), but I don't do anything the rest of the afternoon.  Which means I get about 20 hours of recovery (including a Sat afternoon nap) to freshen up for Sunday's long run.

2.  Saturday is the only day of the week I don't run.  So from Friday morning, all the way to Sunday morning, my legs get a much enjoyed 48 hour break from running.

3.  While the Saturday ride is long, and has some intensity...it's still low impact.  And since cycling is my strength, it may not wreck me as much.  If I were in full cycling mode, I'd usually be riding about 70-80 on Sat, and 90-100 on Sunday.  Both at a harder pace than I currently ride when training for a HIM.  So I guess recovery from a 70ish mile ride may not be as big an issue for me.

Question for you about your masters swim meets -- are most people who participate "real" swimmers (like swam competitively growing up)?  Our masters group goes to meets on occasion and I've been somewhat interested in joining them, but a) I can't seem to figure out diving in off the blocks without my goggles ending up around my neck, and b) I'm an okay swimmer at best (decent for triathlons, I guess, but certainly nothing like those who grew up swimming).  Just curious if I'd be way out of my league at a masters swim meet!

I've only been to one and it was a pretty low key affair.  There was a wide range of abilities from former swimmers to people who..... ummm..  clearly weren't

I did the 1500 in that meet and when we finished we had to wait in the water for a good 15-20 mins while an older gentleman finished up.

Could I find a brighter pair of shoes? Just ... wow.

Better make sure my run is ready to go anytime I use them.

I gotta thank ya'll again. All the bike talk has really helped me figure out how much more I can be doing, so I started formulating a bike plan to improve. Yesterday was the first night that included multiple sprint intervals. They will be added in as a once a week thing.

Thanks again.

Cool laces.

I've got a pair of those laces but now that I am on a tri break until I move again I removed them from my shoes.  I find them to be a bit of a pain in the butt, but they work pretty effectively for racing once you dial them in.

Bright shoes seem to be the in thing this year.  Mine are quite bright as well.

Jason, I always did my long run following my long ride as well.  I tried switching it up one year and doing my long run in the middle of the week and honestly I don't think it was any better for me.

Xtenex. Like them much better than things like Yankz for racing. Takes some extra time to set up, but then they never have to be adjusted again. Like Kim, I still prefer laces, but these work well for races with how much faster they go on.

Awesome shoes and laces!!!

I did another FTP test on the trainer and was down from 115 ftp to 97. thats kind of a bummer. I just didn't have anything in the tank this morning. The Insanity Workout is INSANE!!! It's thrashing me. love it. :=)

I think Marshall has the biggest weekend of all of us as he is nutty enough to be working with others to put on a neighborhood 5k. So just a quick shout-out - thanks for that, Goosedog - what in the world would the rest of us do if not for folks like you that take on all that stress for the rest of us. I hope it goes well for you and the rest of the organizers as well as your community - I know this race has a a great deal of added meaning for you in light of the ongoing events in Boston.

Not a huge weekend for me - we are headed up to the mountains to ride tomorrow, then (hopefully) our first OWS of the season with a run on Sunday.

Been MIA for awhile.  You guys are a wealth of infomation I must say.  Cool shoes Ben!  I prefer to do my long runs after the bike but I did the opposite last week because I had a Half Marathon on Saturday.  Winds were at 30 mph Sunday so my "long" ride was 41 miles.  Going out sucked, riding 9 mph when it's normally 20+ heading south.  But coming back north was SWEET!  On a light downhill I hit 44 mph a couple of times.  I got KOM on Strava on two segments!  Of course here in Kansas I'm sure most KOM's on Strava are with a tailwind.

I posted on Crowie's website asking if it was true he was doing the Kansas 70.3.  He actually answered my post and called me "Mate".  Pretty classy I must day.  Hines Ward is doing that race also so it will be a star studded day.

This weekend I have another HM but it's on Sunday so I'm riding 75+ miles Saturday and Sundays "race" will be a 13.1 mile training run.  I actually PR's my HM last Saturday, a little bonus, especially given my limited run training this season.

Looking forward to the race season and reading your RR's
