Hey guys.  When you ask a question referencing another site please include a link to page you are referencing.  Not picking on you Krista, its a great question that Linda, Steve, and/or Kelly will chime in on but i can't find it at ironman.com and would like to see it.

For those that are IMing or have--are the weekly average totals that are up on ironman.com realistic (11K swim, 232 mile bike, and 44 mile run)? Did you guys really hit that???

Krista

That's the basics to Critical volume.  Here's a link to more info about CV

"...if I wanted to be a top pro Ironman triathlete, I would want to meet the critical volumes for the event plus the additional 50% bike volume.

Swim = 2.4 miles = 4220 yds x 9/3 = 12,660yds

Bike = 112 miles x 8/3 x 150% = 450 miles

Run = 26.2 x 7/3 = 60 miles

For a pro Ironman triathlete, this equates to about 3.5 hours of swimming, 23 hours of biking and, about 7 hours of running.  This is a total of about 33.5 hours of training for the final build week before the race."

sdalessio - 2009-12-16 9:59 AM I'm racing! I still have my sub 25min. 5k goal (25:19 PR) but ...
the race is Sat. and I'm going to be hung over and I've lost some speed from my fall marathon training so
I'll just have to do the best I can!!!!!!!!!

Maybe this is a stupid question, but why do you have to be hung over??

I am going to my husband's work Christmas party the night before which is a small group of good friends.  And sadly since i don't drink much while training even a glass or two of whatever will leaving my feeeling some effect the next morning.

And a fun Christmas 5k is not enough of a reason for me to abstain.

Sam I am so with you girl.  I didn't drink at all during the summer and as of last weekend's company and tri training group Christmas parties I am a mess.  Sad that a long island ice tea and a shot of tequila is enough to make me dance on the tables.  I'm such a cheap drunk.
I love being a cheap drunk (one drink and I have a great buzz for about 90 minutes!). And think of the calories you save! Totally worth it, IMO.

SSMinnow - 2009-12-16 12:59 AM Ok people the day has arrived....who is racing this weekend? and what are your goals?
For those who are new, I am the official cheerleader for all of you and post a question like this every Wednesday to get us excited for the upcoming weekend!

It dawned on me, the racing might be subsiding a bit for some of us, so how about a new question for the week?  What is the one thing you are most proud of in your '09 triathlon season and why?  if you haven't done a tri yet, what are you most proud of accomplishing athletically?

For me, it's hands down learning how to swim well enough to complete a HIM.  After never learning as a child because I was very scared of the water and the nearly drowning in Hawaii on my honeymoon 19 years ago, it is the single hardest/most humiliating thing I have ever done and by far the most rewarding.  While I am slower than a turtle on land, I could swim forever (ok maybe not that long) and that is amazingly gratifying for this land lover.

Suzy

I had to think about this one for a minute as there are several things I am proud of myself for accomplishing but I guess the #1 thing would be actually following through and exceeding my goal of finishing a triathlon.  When I initially set out to do this, weight loss was my #1 goal but after my first race, I realized that I'm actually pretty good at this and have so much fun doing it that I am contemplating my first HIM this year ~ that is if I can get myself to be more confident in the water!!

CyborgQueen - 2009-12-16 9:36 AM I had typed out a long post, but it's starting to sound like a bunch of useless information. So I'll just shorten it to a simple question!

Garmin Forerunner 305 or Triathlon Watch or Both? Why?

I would suggest a 305, and either a Timex, or a Polar (if budget permits)....

Garmin is great for biking, running, hiking, etc.... While the 310tx would be nice for open water swimming it does no good in the pool (let's be honest most of us train in the pool the majority of the time).  So go Garmin, other.... I use 305 for training (mostly running) and Polar for racing.  Plus the polar is more of an everyday watch.  I wouldn't wear the 310 around town.

If you are going Power Tapp, Open water majority of the time then I would consider the 310tx.  But bang for buck.... 305- Check ebay, craigslist.  You can find them cheap.  I got my 305 for $100

Agree with Steve totally on the $$ for the 310. The only reason I upgraded was I had my car broken into and my gym bag stolen.  I was able to justify to my wife the upgrade as I had already paid X for the 305. As much as some may want to tell you, GPS function does not work in open water swims. I had it on one time and downloaded the info to GarminConnect. It showed a swam all over the place and something like 5k when it was a 750m open water swim.It loses its signal once it goes in and out of the water. Only way it really can track it is the same way as the 305 and all the others- Throw in a ziploc bag and put in your swimcap(never tried it, others swear by it.)

RoniS - 2009-12-16 12:11 PM You can now add 100 people to your friends list

The thing I'm most proud of is my first marathon last April. For the first 36 years of my life I was convinced that I was just NOT a runner. I had tried several times to run, because for some reason I always liked the idea, but I couldn't go more than a couple minutes without feeling like I was going to die. I had literally never ran a mile in my life, not even as a kid.  So, when I stepped up to the starting line at the Yakima River Canyon Marathon, it was one of the proudest moments of my life. I was even a little choked up starting that race. I knew the determination it had taken to get to where I was, and I knew I could run that race, me the girl who was "just not a runner".  It was about so much more than just running. It was knowing that anything is indeed possible and breaking down those preconceived ideas that hold us back. And, I did run every step of that marathon.

My first HIM Boise 70.3 in a torrential downpour was pretty good too

edited to add: there was 2 years of learning to run and training between being a nonrunner and doing that marathon. lol

Roni - you are my hero.  I am so not a runner and at the moment don't even enjoy it.  I remember when you joined the group and I noticed that your run times were close to mine. That gave me so much encouragement throughout the year.  I always thought a "runner" had to be a sub 8 min/miler or something rediculously fast like that.  But you taught me that being a runner is a state of mind and a determination to accompish your goals.  Your training and races have been so wonderful this year.  Plus I want your six pack abs Wink

Tracy

100 % agree with you roni. Once we clear our minds of we can and can not do, we have already won.(hallmark card wow)

And Tracy, just recover. You're going to be fine. You are a runner. Just like me.( And you know I suck at running.). You'll be back. GGGGRRRRRRR

Krista

Least you be discouraged by the numbers you can do IM training without killing yourself.   I did every single workout my coach gave me but he had a finish philosophy over performance so take that into consideration.  I wasn't real fast but I got it done.   Most weeks were between 12-15 hours of training.  Because of leg issues even back then my longest run was 16 miles before the IM.  YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!

2008 Totals  (IM CDA in June)

Bike:

159h 06m 48s  - 2363.36 Mi
Run:102h 08m 11s  - 534.86 Mi
Swim:60h 14m  - 153308 Yd

I agree with the others....I think those #'s are a little high for an average.  However, there will be weeks like that.
I followed a BT plan with a mindset of having a good time and "finishing".  I finished fine...next time I will go with a goal time focus.  Anyway, check out some of the BT plans.

CAN I RANT FOR A SECOND?  This is the note I got from my contact at GURU regarding the delivery of my bike which was supposed to be this week:

Good afternoon ladies… I have some sad news to report as there is a production hold on all Magis frames at the moment. We are working to correct a kink we discovered in the testing of an upgrade/modification we have made to the seat tube design where we have replaceable hanger. Because of the new shape we can’t get it to fit/interact properly with the BB, so we are re-designing the BB and that won’t be ready before the New Year. Sorry, but we just got the news from production in the past 24 hours as we just finished the tests and I haven’t been able to email you on this until now.

So rather than send a sub-par frame out to you, we’re holding off on the production until we know it will pass our testing procedures.

My apologies ladies… this was an unexpected situation otherwise it would have left already.

I’ll be able to provide you with an update when I get back in the New Year as we’ll be doing the next round of tests within the next few weeks (the holidays mean we lose a number of days.)

Once again, apologies, but we are not willing to compromise on the quality of your bicycle.

Sad news to report?  I am so irked.  I had to email them before they even contacted me and supposedly they just found out? Give me a frickin' break.  My note back gave them until January 7th for an update.  If not, my expectation is a full refund.  If I don't get it,  the BT, ST and every bike forum will hear about it.  Ok, I'm done.

Time for me to get a new chain on my bike.  I have a 12/25 cassette.  When I bought my bike my chainring was a 50/34, but I upgraded to a 53/39 and now the rear derailleur is stretched too far when I'm in a neutral gearing (mid cassette/lg chainring).

Do new chains come with extra links that you personally adjust or do I need to order specifically for my gearing.  So far all that I've seen is 10 sp chains.  And, to look cool this new year, anyone know where I could find a blue chain?

FWIW Suzy I would would be leary of buying a frame that has not been successfully tested. It sounds like it is still a prototype phase. If they are being honest how it the world can the "replaceable hanger" affect the bottom bracket? No one is really spending a lot of effort redesigning the seat tube (except for aerodymanic profile) and I would look at other options.

Is your "bike guy" keen on this bike? I know he has a lot of postive and negative opinions, but bear in mind they are just that, opinions. Other experts will like and dislike other brands and models. Basically I am saying keep an open mind and you might want to bail on this bike.

Jeremy:

A new chain should come with enough links to accomodate the largest gearing. You simply remove the extra links with a chain link removal tool. BTW you should check to see if your cassette is worn down, and if so replace it too. It ay be fine, but check it to see.

Dang Suzy, I'm sorry.  You have been so patient findingpiecing together the right bike.
Although I am no expert, I tend to agree with the bike expert - Doug.  I really don't think you want to work out the kinks while you are riding fast!

JHagerman - 2009-12-16 2:33 PM Time for me to get a new chain on my bike.

Jeremy - check out this link for the blue chain....

Ahh it comes back to bite me!  Thanks for your help Andy.

So how about the chainring issue google that for me...

I couldn't resist - I'm sure you understand!  Seriously - I think Doug answered the chainring question....

CyborgQueen - 2009-12-16 12:36 PM I had typed out a long post, but it's starting to sound like a bunch of useless information. So I'll just shorten it to a simple question!

Garmin Forerunner 305 or Triathlon Watch or Both? Why?

I love my 305...never leave home without it.  Why - it gets me all the info I need.

But check with Tracy - she is the watch expert...check out her White Lake album (first pic)
