How was the road on the bike?

I'm trying to choose between GP 4000s and Vittoria Open Corsa Slicks. The Vittoria are a lot less forgiving for gravel and eaten up roads.

Chipseal? Ground up roads? Lots of gravel? Or is it a basically smoothish surface with the standard garbage?

Only the out and back road sucks.. the rest of the course is quite nice. No winter helps keep roads nicer than up north. The new out and back about 20 miles from end is sweet like butter...wish they extended that section and cut the out and back where sn is.

I'd go with lowest rolling resistance if I was buying race tires. Have you seen the research and ratings?

+10-15 watts...nice!

I found with my Orbea and latex tubes made up for the loss in power last year....sort of free speed is always nice

Aye, however all that is negated with a flat or two. The GP4000s tires aren't as high up on the crr listing but they're tougher to flat with. If it's a standard road or even slightly beat up I want to see what the Vittorias will do but if it's half chipseal and glass shards, not so much.

We share the same birthday....I'll be 50 though on 11/4. Figure doing IM is great way to celebrate turning 50.

I was bummed that with leap year there won't be IMFL on our birthday since 2006 for like 11-12 years.

My birthday is also 11/4 and this is my first Ironman.  Going to bed early on my birthday doesn't sound that fun, but doing this race on my first day as 43 will be awesome!  Good luck in your training.

I love the quote "She who does not attempt the absurd cannot acheive the impossible" I will change the she to a he. I just might use this on my ironman crew tee shirts.

I kind of feel like an outsider - my birthday is in August.  Oh well.  This will be my last year in the 50 - 54 age group and my first Ironman.  Can't wait.

Doing New Orleans HIM this weekend.  Looking for a good time.

enjoy,

Duane

What half marathon are you running?  I am from Toledo,OH. and ran many races there including the BudLite tri that at Olander park.

I moved to SC 6 years ago...Florida Ironman 2011 will be my 1st.

I am running the Glass City 1/2 marathon. It usually starts downtown but it now starts at the glass bowl at the University of Toledo. IM Florida will be my first as well. I do the sylvania tri at olander and the one a maumee bay. I hope the winter down there was much better than up here.

Now that most everyone has their 2011 season lined up, scheduled, and paid for (???), I was curious to see who is going to complete a half or full iron distance race prior to Florida (ex. just before taper period, etc).  I am planning to race in the Rev3 Anderson Half on Oct 9th.  I was thinking about doing Augusta 70.3 again ( would be a good course if you live in the SE to do prior to IMFL ) but I have done that, and I really like the Rev3 series races.

What are you guys doing?

Andy...

I'm doing Augusta as a prep for Florida. Just finished the New Orleans duathlon (they canceled the swim). Nice race but without the swim it really wasn't satisfying for lack of a better word. Bike was windy but I really liked the run. Plenty of support along the way on both the bike and run. Great volunteers. enjoy,Duane

I am doing Mooseman 70.3 on June 5th. Also doing oddz & endz such as century rides, local sprint tri's and some long distance swims. Biggest focus is remaining injury free, which for me seems to be my biggest challenge!! Mitch
