Wow, I am 100% with you on this one. I am right in your neighborhood but should be racing around 175. Group weightloss challenge to start the new year? I'll join you in the weightloss challenge shortly after I binge on all that food I've been missing. I'm giving myself until mid January, I'll still be working out just not watching what I eat. There will be zero noodles or sushi on my plate for a long time. |

Last year I thought I worked hard, but SEALS are holy shot crazy guys! This alone will help me reach asnother level this year. The story is close to me because my wife and I knew Marcus in college so this story is close to home.
I read that book in two sittings. Very well written and an incredible story. |

This will be my 2nd IM attempt and I am wondering why I didn't stick to my promise of no early season major events because I hate to train in the cold... BRRR.... I am hoping this experience will help me keep my promise in the future, as I am already hating the cold rides, but will be telling myself come 1 Jan when my training offically begins to suck it up and get out there and ride. Looking forward to our journey together. |

Master 1468 Montgomery, Tx | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread Lets get some weight loss goals out there. I want to race this year at 200 and see what happens. I was 206ish for last years race and I did much better than I thought I would. Although I feel my run is good, I think 15-20 pounds lighter would bring me better results. lets go! |

Looking forward to our journey together. Hello and welcome. I too HATE THE COLD. I really, really hate it. I figured I would be making close friends with my trainer and the treadmill at the gym. On the upside, we are all done with our big race in May... so the rest of the year is open! |

Although I feel my run is good, I think 15-20 pounds lighter would bring me better results. lets go! I need to lose about 5 lbs, but for me to do it takes so much. Meaning: I have to starve at 1400-1600 calories a day. Ugh. Misery. Not sure I'm motivated enough to be that miserable for 5 lbs. |

There are a lot of really good smart phone apps out there that can give you a good idea of how much you are eating and need. I've found they tend to over estimate the amount I burn during workouts. i fitness and lose it are two. good luck Nancy |

I would love to be at racing weight of 5 to 7 pounds less than I am right now, but it is extremely difficult to maintain whenever I get close. I guess we just have to train a little harder to move the extra 5lbs at the same speed |

Master 2468 Muskego, Wisconsin | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread The post office told me they couldn't ship my bike priority yesterday. Parcel from Japan to the East coast takes 1 to 2 months with our experience being closer to 2 months. That means I have to pack it up and ship it with our "quick" shipment that leaves today. The only biking I'll get for the next 3(ish) weeks is at the gym, yuck. As for weight, I'm at around 190 right now, my best race weight is under 185. I'll start counting calories after we get home. 12 days to go. |

Member 48 | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread Another way to lose weight is get a intestinal infection (like I did) I lost 15lbs in less then 3 weeks. I went from 180 to 165. I did not even need to workout. I do not recommend it for anyone. Infact I am having trouble puting the wieght back on in the midst of training. Go with the less calories route. |

I just need to get serious about it now rather than later. |

Champion 9430 No excuses! | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread I will throw a big weightloss number out there. Currently 212, best running "racing weight" was around 175. I think that would be incredible, 180's would be awesome, but certainly sub 200 or I will be pissed at myself. Now someone me some more cookies before I kick it in. |

Extreme Veteran 492 Frisco | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread Less than 2 weeks away from the "official" start of your 20 week plans. Mine has been in a constant state of change since I started working on it/finished it the first time several weeks ago. Unfortunately, my pool is closed for the next 3 weeks for repairs so for the first week of IM training I am going to have to find a different place to swim. My main goal this year is to go into the race healthy. Last year had some hamstring issues in the weeks leading up to the race and I want to be smarter about my run training this year. As for weight loss, I feel pretty good that I have been able to maintain my weight to within 5lbs of race weight from IMTX 2011 which was 170. I am going to do everything I can to keep it right around that number this year but will probably end up at 165'ish on race day. Anyone looked at long range weather forecast yet?? |

20 | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread Hey guys so I am about 9 weeks into the don fink training program and have been trying to stick to it as much as possible right now I am swimming a 21:30 mile in the pool and about a 45 minute two mile, I am running an average of 7.5 mph on my run which is roughly a 7:30 and I come from a cycling background so the bike is always been the easiest... this will be my first ironman so I am very nervous and could use all the input I can get from more experienced like you guys.My questions for you guys:1. When I had a cycling coach in the past she said when I would do trainer workouts on the bike I should just double the time soil I was on the trainer for 1 hour it was the equivalent of a 2 hour ride on the road... Is this true in the tri world? Or should I just do the full time aka bore myself to death2. I purchased a nice new treadmill for home is treadmill workouts as good as running on the road especially with the colder weather right now?3. Is the 30-34 age group very competitive? |

Extreme Veteran 1986 Cypress, TX | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread I'll opine on your questions: 1. The trainer is definitely tougher. Not twice as hard but I don't know how to quantify it. It might be 20% or 30% or whatever. I would never ride the full prescribed time on the trainer. 2. I don't think running on a treadmill is the same as running on the road. My gait and stride are different on a treadmill. I don't think one is easier or harder than they other... just different. 3. The largest and most competitive age groups are the three groups within M30-44. M40-44 is usually the largest. M35-39 is usually the fastest. M30-34 had 197 finishers in 2011 (top 10 finished from 9:00 to 10:00 but the top 2 guys finished in 9:00 and 9:11, 3rd was 9:41), M35-39 had 306 finishers (top 10 finished from 8:55 to 10:07) and M40-44 had 360+ (top 10 finished from 9:33 to 10:22). |

Not twice as hard but I don't know how to quantify it. It might be 20% or 30% or whatever. I would never ride the full prescribed time on the trainer. I work with QT2 Systems and under our training protocols because rides on the indoor trainer do not include down hills, stop lights, etc., they get a 1.2 factor applied to them. That is, a 100 min ride on trainer is worth 130 minutes outside. |

20 | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread Thanks guys for the feedback that was exactly what I was looking for... Ya I figured sitting on a bike trainer had to be a little harder then a real road workout due to no coasting stoping or downhill.... I would love to be able to get to the point were I am competitive but I think I just need to concentrate on finishing the first one then go from their.... |

What about doing a Spinerval DVD while on a trainer, does that increase the the time advantage vs "on the road"? Edited by x_caliber50 2011-12-23 12:51 PM |
