![]() Fred D - 2012-01-07 5:24 AMHonestly Chris I would on ably think aqua jogging is the ideal at the start along with some real running as well. It's the delicate balance of getting some run miles in without reinjuring yourself. Have you ever looked into the BarryP plan? Also, the weight loss is key. There is a lot of literature that supports far fewer running injuries if your weight is in a normal BMI range. Thanks all for the ideas. For the record, I was doing Barry's plan and had lost 20 pds since September, when I got the injury. ![]() |

Pro![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Fred D - 2012-01-09 7:10 AM Had a nice 2,600 yd swim this am. Question for the fishes?? I have been working on my kick a lot more this off season and I really think it helps my positioning in the water. My ankles are runner's ankles and highly inflexible. I was working on trying to get them to be looser in the water, but any drills or tips for improving this? Thanks. Fins! Introduce slowly. Focus on slow, smooth, strong kicks while using them. Use them swimming or with a kickboard, and do some kicking on your back with them, too. |

Or most triathletes I would suggest a full, I would like to hear the fishes pov here though a I think there is some debate on the one.Fred D - 2012-01-07 5:21 PM Sure. 50s with rest. 6*50 with first 50 breath every 2nd stroke, then next 50 breath every 3rd stroke, then every 4th stroke etc until you hit breathing every 7th stroke. Then reset and do over. Note, this is NOT hypoxia training, rather it allows you to focus on great form. You are supposed to swim the 50s really easy. Try it sometime, as it also breaks up the monotony. I enjoy doing the 3/5/7's but more so with a pull buoy. Do you have a full suit or sleeveless? I pulled the trigger a few days ago and bought one. I know I'll definitely need it for Columbia and for sure NOT for Cozumel. I hope it works better than the last one I had. Full sleeve is best - this is based on checking out the pro field at any wetsuit legal race. That said, I have a sleeveless. The races I have done so far that have been wetsuit legal have been in water over 70 degrees. It can get a little toasty. I'd prefer that they drop the wetsuit legal temp a bit, but that's just me If I do a colder water race, I'll probably invest in a full sleeve. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good morning guys! I had a bit of a busy weekend with family coming into town and all the other regular weekend stuff. I did manage a good run and some time on the trainer. I am finding it hard at this time of year to stay consistent. I think morning workouts are really going to help. Another issue is swimming. I used to live across the street from a gym with a little pool so i could basically swim any time. It's further away now and i am trying to use the city pools which have pretty limited lane swimming time so i really have to get my head into being there at a certain time to get my swims in. I also have the weirdest cold. I feel fine - no major congestion, achiness, or other symptoms except for this rumbling chest cough that is not terrible but annoying ... so i have to keep an eye on that and not push too hard. That said, I have floor hockey tonight. It's a fun thing i picked up last fall - i totally suck - but a group of people from work play in a rec league on Monday nights. It's nice variety and fun to do a team sport. I do come out with quite a few bruises almost every week. I do joke that it's the most Canadian thing - a group of adults playing hockey in a gym apologizing to one another all the time. ha! Anyone else have some fun rec things they do not tri related? I know Ryan plays actual hockey on ice. |

I really enjoy throwing some races in the winter time (offseason) to keep me in the competitive mode and remember why I do all this training! Nice race report! Sounds like a tough course. |

I wish I could do some of the exercises. If I did, I would not be able to walk for a week. |

You can't beat a little over 50% off. The coldest the water has ever been on a race for me was 60 degrees. From that day on I swore never to do it again on a jammer. Ohh well, live and learn. |

I know Ryan plays actual hockey on ice. Bummer you don't have a place close enough to get your swims in. Anyone else have some fun rec things they do not tri related? A couple of years ago I joined a soccer league and everything went well but "old" lingering soccer injuries started to creep up on me and I knew if I continued with the soccer, I would have not been able to run. I gave that up and now just concentrate on cross training - Insanity & P90X workouts!! |

It's a "drinking club with a running problem" I snowboard when I can, and I hike a fair amount. Summited Kilimanjaro a year ago, and I'm headed to Nepal to trek to Everest Base Camp and summit Kala Patar next year I REALLY miss rock climbing, but I kind of can't do that in Florida... |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() | ![]() Nice job on the weekend races, Ryan, Kim & Rudy! I'm struggling to put together my season schedule. Partly because sometimes it's hard to plan races so far in advance because of a hectic spring season with our video production business. I would also like to find 1 or 2 more HIMs in addition to Galveston, but unless I want to travel quite a bit, I'm restricted to Buffalo Springs (hot & hilly) and Austin (happens during football season...another busy time for us). There's always a ton of sprints around here to do, although I would really like to do more Olympic distance races. There are a couple in the area...but the early season Olympic is a potential conflict as well...and the late season race is during football season, too. I'm a bit frustrated and feel like I'm lacking focus to put it all together for 2012. I still need to pull the trigger and register for Galveston...then I guess actually getting a training plan together would be a benefit as well. I'm definitely the type that needs to see some structure in the big picture. At least I have been consistent in training in the meantime, but I'm needing something more for the long haul. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() | ![]() ratherbeswimming - 2012-01-09 2:56 PM Anyone else have some fun rec things they do not tri related? Not necessarily rec related, but I stay pretty busy with a business I run on the side...video production, focused on sports videos and primarily recruiting-type videos for kids who want to pitch themselves to college programs. During football season we produce a weekly football highlight show for our county teams. I also am the sports director for a local radio station, so I do play-by-play broadcasting for area games. Used to bowl professionally, and have a good friend who is trying to get me back into the sport. I've been giving it some thought, although I think it would be hard to balance everything I do and try to compete at the level I used to. Plus, bowling equipment isn't cheap, either...and I already have one sport that I can't afford to finance! I would absolutely love to play hockey sometime...unfortunately, living in a rural area in Texas, there aren't too many opportunities to play hockey. I just live vicariously through NHL Center Ice and watch my favorite NJ Devils play as often as possible. |

I was going to climb Kilimanjaro when I go to Africa next year but it added too much to the cost of the trip. Colour me green. How'd you like it? Living in Oregon I love to mountaineer and rock climb. I need to pick up some new friends here in Tucson and get back into rock climbing. Come on out to Tucson with your snowboard and climbing shoes and we can take care of both for you, on the same day even. lol |

I know that the travel adds quite a bit to the already expensive sport but it is a great way to get in a race that might fit your schedule. I'd say come to Tucson but we lack those things called bodies of water. But there should be a few races that are an extended driving trip that maybe you can sneak in |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I probably have too much going on non related to Tri. In addition to chasing my two kids around in their various activities I am pretty big into deer hunting with a bow and to a lesser degree with a rifle. Also like ice fishing in the winter. I guess I am pretty much into most types of solitary sports and leisure activities. |

![]() I got into swimming to get in better shape for scuba diving, which got me into cycling, and running and ultiamtely tris. Which lead to hardly diving at all. I used to get 100+ dives in a year, incluidng at least once a week on our local beachs. It's not healthy to dive and exercise (from a bubble creation /decompression illness standpoint), so I did it less and less. I do need to find more balance and get back to diving. Went twoce last year, none off the beach. Also underwater photgraphy, flyfishing, skiing, snowboarding, crosswords in ink... I keep a website at www.underwaterplanet.com and http://www.underwaterplanet.com/gallery/ this is what my local diving looks like Edited by ChrisM 2012-01-09 9:38 PM |
