slow 30 min swim this morning in the pool. Just couldn't get myself moving today!

@lisa- I knew mountain lions could be an issue (though they usually like to watch everything from a few miles off) but I had never heard of rattlers in denver!

Lisa... mountain lions, attacking birds and rattle snakes? And you go out running at 10pm??? Maybe we should start another challenge here, I just don't know how to call it. Anyway, you won!

Jackie, congrats on your AG win, you rock and can't wait to see what else you accomplish this season!

Jim, big kuddos for your commitment to swimming at such low temps (56F, Brrrr..)

Mitch, other than the swimming pool part, sounds like a good weekend with lots of strawberries and bourbon!

Mark, thanks for sharing that inspirational story, very touching

I'm glad I'm keeping you moving. I've got to be honest. I came out of the winter 10lbs overweight, and I need to work it off. Plus I want to be 6 minutes faster on my HIM and break 6 hours. My biggest weakness is going to still be my biggest weakness, which is the swim. The weather is not being my friend on this, since my pool is still 56F. with my wet suit anything over 50F is tolerable.
PS It has been a long time since I've had a legit podium.
You do have a shot at me this weekend. I have a trial on Friday, and the judge has vowed to take it into the weekend. He's done it in the past, so I don't see it as an idle threat. If that is the case, I will not be able to mark time Friday or Saturday.

You'll just have to squeeze in 30 minutes late - like me last night. No excuses!

I too have weight to lose. I don't see the 10 pounds - maybe some is in muscle in my thighs, but I really doubt it?

@Jackie - Awesome win. Keep on kicking a$$.

@Jim & Mitch - Challenges when Gabe is even at 80% is rigged - never came close to first any month when Gabe was on.

@Bruno - you always remember your first!

General health report - PT is a slow slog - but I do see some progress. Less pain while sitting and none while sleeping. Likely another 3-4 week away. Have stopped Graston and moved to ART - which is more focused and get at the issue. Started rolling with a lacrosse ball in the arse region. It is really a great technique because it isolates the specific bodies giving me troubles.

Swimming: It is pretty remarkable swimming 5-6 days per week. This past weekend I swam 7500 yds between Saturday (3500) and Sunday (3200). Like most triathletes, I had focused on a lot long swims 1500+ sets. Now, I'm swimming sets more like a swimmer (shorter sets but more volume). Main sets might be 50 x 50, 20 x 100, ladders (100-200-300-400-300-200-100). That's on top of 1000-1200 of warm ups and drills plus another 400 of cool down. For the first time, I can feel myself grip the water rather than fight it. Although I'm making great progress (decreasing my 100 yd times by :05 over 3000 yds), in the course of the race, I'd maybe saving a couple of minutes here and there. Goes to show, that the effort needed to improve the swim isn't truly worth the results.

Dennis--I have pepper spray but usually forget to bring it. I've got it stashed out of the kids' reach in the garage. Apparently I'll need to get better about bringing it.

Public Service announcement.
There are several of us who are friends on Facebook, it started with the group's original mentor Ernesto. Gabe, MarkZ, Jackie, Berry and I all have that connection. Its fun to get to know the non-triathlete. I have remained friends with, even having met a few in person when we were in the same area or competed in the same race, when they have dropped from the group and or stopped competing. I know, there are a few because of work and personal reasons, like the guy who is a spy for the CIA, who can't or aren't comfortable with it, and that's cool. But if anyone is interested, I would accept your friend request. I'm James Bacarella and I'm in Michigan.

Joe - don't knock your swim achievement - 5s per 100 over 3500 yds is awesome!

added a swim and run - both personal achievements - mentally.

swim set was awesome - WU/CD; 5x50 all out 10s rest; 3x400 RPE 3,4,5 - to me this mimic race day - all out surge followed by steady pace increasing to finish strong and I did it! I always struggle with pacing in all three disciplines but this workout really helped with that; looking forward to more of these!

run was hot horrible, tiring, ''shall I quit'', ugh ... HR was ok-ish at 152 but body wasn't feeling it; then I noticed my legs - turning over effortlessly like roadrunner - my legs didn't feel tired in the least! so focused on legs for remainder trusting them to take me home; which they did.

I always hear about each training session has a purpose - today it clicked and I got SO much more out of it mentally rather than physically.

Joe, sorry to hear about the long recovery but your strong swimming base will pay off.  According to a good friend who is a coach and under the guidance of Brett Sutton (famous coach of Chrissie Wellington in the past as well as other top pros), one should swim as much as possible not only to try to get faster on the swim.  But the other benefits are coming out from the swim feeling strong for the next two events as well as the endurance/cardio benefits it provides.

After a while of swimming regularly, I do feel it complements my long bike and run workouts.

Adding a good 4000m swim yesterday and a 7 mile run today.  Like Joe, I'm also seeing some benefits from pushing myself in the pool (which I don't enjoy as much, but am trying to embrace with a positive attitude).  Was able to swim 4000m in 1:11 (1:48/100m pace), so slowly getting faster.

Ok, Joe, Gabe and Mark. I am FINALLY embracing the swim. I may even be enjoying it. I am really looking forward to being more efficient, and less tired to set myself up for a good bike/run.

Swam last night but cut short due to persistent cramping in both of my feet. After the 3rd lap where my feet cramped I called it a night. 1 hr and 15 min on the trainer this morning.

Lisa - I corrected your total time for you. All swim, bike and run workouts are added for your total time, even if they are less than 30. The 30 minute threshold only matters to get your point for the day.

Mitch, I usually cramp in the pool when I swim following hard or long runs the same day.  I have to stop when that happens and stretch my toes against the floor/wall of the pool and usually it gets better after a while.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes - one of my harder runs in while that morning. I stretched them out a couple times. The double whammy of left and right foot at same time was enough for me to bag the workout. I also need to look at my nutrition and make sure I'm getting all the water and minerals I need!
