January 7-8 January 7 is Ben's birthday Welcome to the new Manatees! Welcome back all returning Manatees! It's actually today, but thanks all! Oops! I hope that being close counts! Happy birthday! Happy Birthday Ben! Thanks for the well wishes. This came from the RD: "Don’t touch the Feral pig traps you will encounter, it’s against the rules. If you see pigs just let them be and they will get out of your way, some riders like to bark at them. The Alligators won’t be very active, and if it’s cold they might be lounging close to some trails to get warm, so give them some space." Good Times. That's hilarious! And great job Chris! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So I got my dad (and mom and brother) a Fitbit for Christmas. He is definitely not an active person. However, something about it has got him up and moving around. He's actually taking walks now, and trying. This is a big deal. I'm glad he likes it! |

When I woke up Saturday morning it was cooler than forecasted, 21* with a feels like 9*. So I chickened out and rode the machine for ride bike in house in the garage. Still needed shoe covers! lol I've ridden in cold temps before, but really haven't in a number of years. Think about 38-40 is the lowest I've gone in recent memory. With all the stuff I've had to put on, it just took too much of the fun out of it. Plus was worried about ice patches and the amount of salt & gravel that gets dumped. Even after it warms up, so much of the stuff is left that wheels can go skating around some in places. Might do more again off road though. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Anyone who is tired of the cold can come join me in my classroom right now. It's a balmy 87 degrees. If that isn't warm enough for you, just wait until the kids get here and it's sure to warm up even more! (when I went down to the office to inform them of the temp, I was told to stop complaining) |

Yeah, it was more of the dread of putting all that stuff on than the actual cold that made me bow out. I could have easily turned around pretty quickly if I wasn't warming up. Getting dressed seemed exhausting lol. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by abake Originally posted by Hot Runner They must have been on my flight here! I counted 145 boxes coming off the plane onto the luggage belt. My humble little duffle was absolutely the LAST thing off the plane. The guy in front of me at customs X-ray was discussing his intended importation of what appeared to be a gun (suspect it was an air pistol for sports shooting--quite popular here) with the agent. I got out of there real fast....hadn't even heard about what had happened in Florida yet (maybe it hadn't yet--confused about time!) I did my part for creative importation by filling my bag with six months worth of electrolyte tablets, 72 granola bars (of course as of yesterday, granola bars have made a reappearance in the store!), six pounds of nuts, three pairs of running shoes, and (yeah!) a whole 4-pound loaf of organic whole wheat bread from my favourite local bakery. Customs didn't even blink--they were too busy with the gun ). The only time they have ever asked me about anything was my bike trainer a few years back. I explained that it was, "Machine for ride bike in house." (My Vietnamese is pretty basic.) Officer gave me a look like I was nuts. "PE?" I ventured, running out of vocabulary. He sighed and waved me through, no doubt having had enough of white people talking nonsense after midnight. Actually, you CAN get most things here in Vietnam, and I doubt anybody's starving or lacking basic clothing, even in pretty poor villages. It's not like South Sudan or Yemen. But it's what you can't get that you crave, and that friends and relatives would ask you to bring! Machine for ride bike in house!!! LMAO It may be time to update the Manatee Dictionary! Fachmie! It's Whopper time! |

I have a Gore jacket that I've worn on rides that start off below 35F or so but I kind of decided that if it wasn't at least 40F, I didn't want to be outside in it. The last few years I've been on run focus for the winter which has worked well for me. The other thing that I've done is when it's quite cold, take it off road -- take the cross bike to the trails in Umstead, etc. |

If you do, which version -free or paid? What do you use it for and what do you like or not like about it? Thanks! I use paid. I use it for planned and completed workouts. I like that it gives me green for completed (within 20% either way of planned time completed), yellow for close, and red for 'you missed a workout get off your lazy azz'. I like that you can have a coach enter your planned workouts and you can communicate through the app. I like the graphs (I am a nerd, I know it) for individual workouts, as well as training loads. You can usually find a coupon code at this time of year that will give I think 20% off. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey look - I'm jumping in 7 pages earlier than last year! Mtnbikerchk/MBC/Randee Story: was never really a very active kid - did what I had to - to get by. I played high school softball and skiied a ton (both of which you can do fat). After college I took up mountain biking (which was always followed by beer and burgers). At at 37 DH decided he was tired of being fat so started running. After a year of following him around to races etc I decided if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Fast forward, to age 42 and probably 2 years on these forums I did my first IM. And the rest is history. Family: DH, 2 cats and 1 greyhound Training: Coach 2017: A Race is Barrelman 70.3 in Niagara Falls. 2016: IMMT was the big one. Weather was uncooperative. I finished. Decided no fulls for 2017 What makes me a good Manatee: I'm generally a nice person with a snarky attitude so while I'm genuinely interested in what you have to say I also offer comic relief Miss me? And yes, Ann-Marie I use Training Peaks -the paid version with my coach. It's fine. If I didn't have a coach I might use the free version. I guess it's all what you want to get out of it - if you love numbers and fancy graphs then that's the program for you! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by amd723 Currently use the free version, since it was linkked to my Timex GPS watch. I have it linked to Garmin Connect now. I haven't looked at it in ages. I simply keep stuff there in the event that someday in the future I have a coach. I'd upgrade at that point, but would have historical data.Taking my mind of things here in Orlando to ask, who uses Training Peaks? If you do, which version -free or paid? Yes, I actually started TP before the coach (and I am actually not officially using a coach, but the ability is there). IIRC, I started with the paid because free you can't move workouts around. If you put in a stock plan (I used a paid HIM plan last year, Matt Fitzgerald I think), you have to just let the workouts stay where they are. I needed to move stuff around for Masters swim etc. |

I use the free version to track running TSS (and to a lesser extent, swimming TSS but I don't find it as accurate or useful). |
