Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sam - I was all excited for a pink Planet X from that posting in pink letters, but the refitting is better. It's a female thing, like finding a really great sale! BTW, I told my hubby about the neck stretching conversation and said it must be a guy thing b/c I was seriously trying to think of what exercises you could do. He looked at me with that "seriously?" expression........ at least he thought it was hilarious. Tony, it is a good thing we don't live closer. You and my husband think way too much alike. John, that was a very cool tip on sighting. I always sighted somthing larger on shore but couldn't understand why I was still bowing off course so bad. Your demonstration showed how I can be spotting somthing but not following the most direct line. Thanks. Michelle - yhea!!!! Very nice work. Chris - go to the doctor. You still want to be able to do the IM and I'd hate for you to blow the Achilles Tendon b/c you ignored the pain. Also I second the shoe recommendation. Are you still going to do the Quintiles marathon in Wilmington? Maybe that would be a good place to pull back if need be? Or test out new shoes. Rob - way to go stud. That is a huge improvement. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() *************** TRAINING RELATED QUESTION***************** How do I prevent this pain? When I run for over an hour, or first run after time off, the next day I have terrible muscle soreness between my shoulder blades. I know it is from pumping my arms but I don't pump them exceptionally hard or anything, just a normal swing. Yesterday I hurt so bad I was getting shooting pain up my neck and had to be careful with my posture and moving my head all day. It is easing up some today but damn!!! Does anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions? This sucks! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() s If it's only a nagging pain, do you think I should just quit running for a few weeks and see what happens? I am totally afraid to go to the doc because he's going to tell me not to run for a few months. My IM training begins the second week in April with a 50 min run in the first week. I am just trying to maintain a base right now to begin my training. Seems to me that you should figure out the problem now than to start IM training w/ nagging pain only to get a month or 2 in and have to bag the IM. Since this is your "off-season" get healthy and be ready for April. I agree with Sam. Go to the sports med doctor or your best PT and figure it out (even if you felt only a little something on your run today). Better to do it now than end up like me, with over a three month hiatus. Don't be dumb, said nicely. ![]() Edited by SSMinnow 2010-02-17 9:09 AM |

Does anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions? This sucks! my first uneducated guess is that its your posture while running. towards the end of most of my long runs i constantly have to remind myself to take a deep breath. at the top of the inhale is where i want to be position wise. then relax my shoulders. no matter what it seems like my shoulders creep up to my ears all the frigin' time. its a constant battle. maybe try that. haha. just as i hit enter, look who shows up ^^^^^^^^^. Yes it seems to be a trait ALL men share. But I am seriously trying to gain some more neck flexibility. I guess I will so some searching online but wait until I get home in case those are keywords for "certain" websites. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Rough day for me yesterday. After a few days of fun with my family, I felt really run down yesterday and my stomach was bothering me. Fought through the day at work but finally cut out at 4:00 and went home. By the time I got home, my lower back was aching and I had the chills and a fever. Spent about 5 hours sleeping in the recliner and then went to bed. Fever must have broke over night because my shirt was all sweaty and I had to get up at 4 am and change it. Feeling a lot better today - guess it was the 24 hour version of the flu. Planning an easy bike ride at luch and then get back into the swing of things tomorrow. Hopefully I have paid my sickness dues for a while! |

If you are trying really hard to hold good form then maybe you are keeping those upper back muscles really tight. Maybe every 10/15 min. focus on relaxing by shaking your arms out, relaxing your jaw and doing some shoulder rolls. Not sure what else it coud be. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() fattyfatfat - 2010-02-17 8:55 AM suzy. i hope you're on a flight back over to the big island to catch this tt IF it goes down. I know, it is semi killing me that such an event is taking place and we are in Kauai! Dang. And to top it off Jason Patrick Lester (attempting 5 IMs in 5 days, Ultraman finisher) was in Kauai, but left Monday! I can't catch a break! Oh well, I guess I will have to slam another Lava flow and go to the beach. ![]() We basically spent the day getting to Kauai, had a quiet dinner at the condo with Paul's parents (his mom has Parkinson's and is really slowing down) before spending the night watching the Olys. Foot hurt which my PT says is the normal flow of such a malady, but it is wearing thin. I am backing off the running even though he did not recommend it AND nearly 100% certain now that you will be doing Lonestar without me. It would take a small miracle to make me feel comfortable that I won't damage the foot. I just can't risk it. Hopefully there will be other opportunities to get together. ![]() Not sure what the day holds since the rest of the family is still sleeping. Make it a good one! PS in the Chi-Chi vs Lava Flow drink off....the Lava Flow (at least when made at Brennecke's) wins hands down! Sorry Birdy. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tracy Is this a brand new thing since all the work on your hip and posture? If so, it could be because your body is realigning itself and not used to it. I know now that I am wearing a heel lift on the shorter leg side I notice issues with parts of the body that never had problems before. Might ask your PT. Also if you do have excessive arm swing, work on cutting it off. The only time you really need to move those arms is when you are going up a steep hill as a way to gain further momentum. Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've had this before but never this severe. I don't really think it was an excessive arm swing b/c both runs were very slow - nothing pushing about it at all. I was wondering if it was a change in posture. Since the PT I've really focused on tightening my abs and keeping my hips tucked under therefore my posture may have changed. I can recognize it is muscle pain, not injury pain, but b/c it was so severe I was curious. Might drop the PT a line to pick his brain. Thanks guys. I'll also see how it feels tonight on the trainer. My workout should be a good test. And Tony seems to be engaging in psychological warfare as he keeps mentioning that the bike could be more unstable in aero now. And he knows that I am totally freaked out to ride in aero already. So he needs to zip it!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

I am about to head out for a five miler this morning, but am a little concerned. As some of you may know, I dealt with Achilles Tendinitis pretty bad last year and so to combat this, I have been stretching quite often. I am afraid I have taken it too far. At times, I have a pretty intense pain on the inside ankle bone and fear I may have pushed the joint a little too far. I'm going to see how it goes today and if there are any sharp pains, I'm heading to see my sports doc on Monday. I am also changing running stores. I really don't like my shoes and the owner has pushed them on me twice now. She is 4'8" and weighs about 80 lbs and only wears the ones she sold me. I don't think there is enough cushion for me which I think may be contributing to my joint pain too. If it's only a nagging pain, do you think I should just quit running for a few weeks and see what happens? I am totally afraid to go to the doc because he's going to tell me not to run for a few months. My IM training begins the second week in April with a 50 min run in the first week. Most likely it is posture issues. Sounds opposite of my problem of lower back pain which seems to come from too much shoulder droop. |

Does anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions? This sucks! I once read a little article about running posture that I took some exercises/drills from. It said to focus on keeping your arms below your waist. This took me a long time to get down during my marathon training, but also helped for my long runs. It is amazing how much you expend pumping them back and forth. This cured my pain similar to yours. I still use my arms some, but only when pushing hard or going up hills as mentioned. |

My goal is to be able to do a workout of some type on Saturday and not hate myself for the duration. I started fresh on my cycling plan so early next week will be my new tests. Delaying the start of teh IM training is much better than having somehting go wrong mid-way -or worse- just before the race. IMO your body needs to be sound starting off...since you are going to wear it down with training. Good luck! |
