Good luck to all our racers. Also hope everyone gets in some good training. The McGrath house hold will be a bit busier now that I get my twins for the summer. Already 13, so now we are loaded with 3 teenage boys and a 2 yo girl.

Thanks for the birthday wishes.  We had an incredible trip at an amazing resort the only downside was no outside pool and the indoor pool was more like a big hot tub.  The weather was perfect and running on hills sucks, they have some BIG hills in Taos.  Hanging out with the kids today and looking forward to Ken's first race tomrorow when everyone in this MG will be a Triathlete!

I had a SUPER, Super Sprint.  I will work on the RR at some point once the numbers are up but I swam freestyle the whole swim and didn't really panic too much. Whew!

I AM A TRIATHLETE!!  3rd in AG on 1st triathlon race is really fun.  Couldn't be happier.  See you at the next race!

Thanks everyone (especially Kim) for the words of advice along the way.  Kim's tip about the cleats on my bike shoes probably saved my knees from the pain I have been getting.  Who knew the tiny adjustment on the cleat would matter that much?

I think Keri pushed the button a bit too soon.  I was pulling my together in time to cross the line. Who am I kidding? I was toast.

Registered for Y Freedom Tri - June 27th 300/12M/3M - I am hooked now.

Happy Monday everyone!  It's been a long workday for me but I did make a big sale today which I'm really excited about since I'm paid strictly on commission.  In other exciting news, James's birthday is coming up and he's absolutely impossible to shop for.  Not that he doesn't want anything, just that what he does want is way out of my budget.  I'm pretty sure I've told you all that he's gotten into photography and is really good at it and after many people have told him he should sell his pictures, he's looking into selling them.  So I emailed a place yesterday in downtown Clemson that sells Clemson photos about possibly selling a picture he took of Death Valley.  I wasn't expecting a quick reply, but today they emailed me asking for the picture and said they'd let me know whether they'd be interested in selling it in their store.  I'm so excited, I really hope they like it.  It would be so cool to be able to take him in the store on his birthday and have him see his picture being sold in the store. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Emma - that is super cool about James.  Maybe you can get him some sort of tri purchase for his birthday.  You know...to make sure he does one.

My kids made sure I did my first by getting me a race belt for Christmas, It was in their budget, useless for anything other than racing, and they wrote little motivational things on it for me.

Looks like everyone had excellent races this last weekend.  Here's hoping the rest of us coming up this weekend at least have as much fun if not similar awesome results (just don't look at mine).

I have a sprint on Monday.  Not sure yet if it is wetsuit legal but I hope so cause I really need a swim in my wetsuit.  Although it's cold enough at the pool right now to bring it there.

I'm doing an OWS race on Saturday afternoon.  It will likely be more of a training day than anything else.

** Question/advice needed re: long rides on weekends that I'm racing**

There are two weekends in July that I'm doing a tri on Sunday.  I'd still like to get a long ride in these weeks, and I'm trying to figure out when is the best time to do it.  As my plan stands now I'll be riding in the AM on Tues and Thurs, and a long ride on Saturday.  A couple options I'm thinking of are:
(1) increase mileage for Tues & Thurs rides, and do a shorter long ride on Friday AM (ie 40mi istead of 60)
(2) keep Tues & Thurs ride as is and do a proper long ride Friday AM

I'm also open to any other suggestions you may have...please help

I've got Sylvan lake this weekend (750/27/5). Weather looks like it might cooperate with me this time. mid 60's forecast and only slighly rainy. (and I think this is nice for Canada booooo....).

No races for me this weekend.  It's my sister's graduation.  Not sure how she's graduating, she's still 15 in my head not 18 and heading off to college in 3 months.

I'm not a huge fan of the 1st option because increasing mileage T/R changes the dynamic of those rides from what they're intended and reducing the long ride removes the point of a long ride...

2nd one is good from a training perspective, not so much from a racing one...

Another option is do the long bike after the race. I have a ton of friends that do this and I've done it once as well. Makes it so you have a forced warmdown and should reduce the amount of time needed to recover from the race. Generally first ~30-45mins are very easy before getting into the normal long bike ride mode.

UGH!!!!!  All excited for a swim, get to the gym, walk into the pool area only to see about 4 10 year old in each lane.  I guess they were the same ones running around the locker room screaming too. Why can't Campus Recreation post the actual times I can swim?? This has happened to me before.  I'm all for helping out the community and the local swim team but at least let me know when they are going to be there so I don't waste my time.  Gonna do some core work and then laundry for the rest of the night and figure out how in the world I'm supposed to get anytime at the pool in this summer since the swim team will be there everyday from 5-7 and the times I'm supposed to be able to go is 9-7 according to campus rec office but I can't go until after 5 because of work so it looks like I'll have to swim Saturday and Sunday if I want to get in more that 1 swim a week unless i suck it up and go swim at the lake.  Supposedly there's a group that swims on Wednesdays at Hartwell, but I'm awful at the whole get out and meet new people especially when it's gonna involve swimming in a lake.

Looks like a few races this weekend!  Good luck to all the racers!  I will be doing a 5k with both of my boys.  Brendan (15) ran this one with Keri and I last year and Cory (17) has never completed a 5k before.

Should be a fun race since it has a ton of runners and pretty good eats after.

Thanks for the input Eric!!  I agree with you about option 1.  I actually like your suggestion best, about getting the long ride on post-race.  Logistics for this may be a little tricky but gonna try to figure out a way to make it happen.

You all figure I should try my wetsuit on sometime before Monday's race?  I haven't had it on since Oct (last race) and I've lost weight since then.  Should be interesting.    Water temps are probably that I'd be fine without it but of course it is all about the HIM in June where I really need it.  Although that is more then enough time to gain weight if need be.
