A little idea of the scale of the race that I participated in Sunday....

If you go to picture #2/21 in the gallery, that is me at the end of that train going into the corner.

Tri the Creek Sprint RR is up.

Did someone say "represent"? Laughing

What would you do differently?:

Buy toe covers

Imagine if you had listened to John how warm your toes would have been? Tongue out
Congrats!!

Is this the advice you're referring to?

fattyfatfat - 2012-09-22 8:53 PM

"Toe covers, socks if you don't normally wear them. Gloves. Long sleeve shirt or arm warmers. And don't take a leak until you get in the water. Have fun"

I drank it up like kool aid--every word of it, even the part about getting in the water.  ahhhhhh, so warm Embarassed

Roni,  So sorry about Jason.  Praying that he responds well to the treatment.

Thanks for the good vibes everyone! First interview seemed to go well. Hoping for the second before the end of the week. Funny thing during the interview, turns out I knew the woman's Dad. He is a fellow woodworker and I have been to his shop. Laughing Small world.

Jayne,  I have a long and proud history of peeing in the wetsuit.  I call it "turning on my personal water heater."

Roni - so scary about Jason.  All my fingers and toes crossed.

Doug - MN?!!?  WTH?  You can't leave me!!!

Sounds like people are rocking as usual.  More marathons, sprints, cross races, hard core!    Keep it up!!

Who's racing this weekend, goals, strategies!?!?

While some of us are already in the off-season and others are a couple weeks from their A race, most of us have, at some time, had a race they were disappointed in. What strategies have you used to pick yourselves up and get back in the game?

I'm doing a 15k trail race with hubby in West Lafayette on Sunday.  Need to see what Julia is up to.  I'll be in her neck of the woods!

If I'm disappointed on race day, I try to remind myself that happens.  It's just one blip in the big picture and there were a lot of good training days before and there will be many more after.  I also take comfort in the fact that you all understand about the good days and bad days, and you love me anyway Kiss

Having experienced that very thing I walked away with 2 lessons.  1st I took a long hard look at what got me in that situation and vowed to never put myself there again, and 2nd is my signature.  That required quite a large slice of humble pie but I try every day to live with that philosophy.

ETA: my avatar pic is from the Heritage Trail half in 2010! It should not be quite as muddy this weekend.

No racing. I remind myself that I do this for FUN and that I'm not saving lives out there when I race. When all is said and done, I have the gifts of a wonderful life, good health, motivation, and in the grand scheme of things IT'S ALL GOOD.

I'm racing! I'm running the run leg on a relay team in the local Oly. I'll be following the SSMinnow 10K race strategy, so don't stand near me at the finish!

When I have a disappointing race, I try to learn what I can and move on to the next one. And I remind myself that I'm doing this for fun and fitness, and stressing about a bad race takes the fun out of it. So if I throw up on my shoes this weekend or trip over a rock or blow up in the last mile, life will go on!

No racing for me!  Good luck to all of our racers!

Great question, Roni!

I try my best to put a positive spin on disappointing races.

It seems like every race is a learning experience and it doesn't help me at all to mope around and be negative.  I try to put the experience to use and file away what I can do a bit differently the next time around to improve upon the next one.

I have found that doing these race reports really helps to zero in on what might have gone bad.  But it also helps to see a lot that maybe went really well.

At the end of the day, like Kyla and Julia just said, I do this for fun, fitness and to stay in shape and fit into my jeans!  Onwards!!!

oh and good luck to you, Doug, sorry about the job lay off. but it sounds like doors are already opening for you!

Who's racing this weekend, goals, strategies!?!?

While some of us are already in the off-season and others are a couple weeks from their A race, most of us have, at some time, had a race they were disappointed in. What strategies have you used to pick yourselves up and get back in the game?

One of my boyfriends reminded me that i had not stopped by in a while and I believe the quote was "I needed to get my head out of my as$$".  I'm sure it won't take you long to figure out who gave me that sage advice.

I suppose the above question is fitting for me since IM certainly was a disappointment.  Similar to what most of you have said, I think it is important to take the time to determine what went wrong and why.  I also think its important to grieve (maybe too strong of a word) on what could have been.   I got it out, I got mad and then I vowed I would fix things for next year.  Getting back into the swing of some training was a very important part of the process for me.  It was also important to step away from triathlon and just do what I like to do on a daily basis which turned out to be running and eating.  I'm a little more balanced these days and working to fit back into my Lucky jeans.

One other thing I learned during the last race was the importance of couching my advice to this group and others.  It is one of the reasons I stepped back for a while. I wasn't going to share this, but I thought it might be useful somehow.  The issues I had in IM were self inflicted.  I told many of you about my salt load protocol and "thought" it worked quite well.  In the end, it didn't.  During the course of the bike, my hands started swelling and my wristband was cutting into my arm.  I was drinking on schedule, fueling appropriately and taking in NA the way I did in training.  The more I did these things, the more swelled (although I didn't recognize it) I became.  All I knew is I didn't go to the bathroom since 6:30am.  I was worried, but then my back started bugging me around 78m on the bike and that was my focal point.  What I didn't realize at the time was my kidneys had temporarily shut down due to salt overload.  The back pain I was feeling was not muscular (or so it is assumed), it was kidney retaliation. I didn't weigh in when I got home, but if you saw me you would realize I was probably about 10-15lbs bigger than when I left in the morning.  I had consumed well over 300oz of fluid and never whizzed once.  My finisher picture definitely portrays the problem. And no, I didn't buy it and I won't be sharing it.  I had similar back pain during the run portion of both BIG DAYS, but dismissed it as muscle fatigue.  While I'll never know for sure, it probably was the same kidney issue due to the same salt load.  My advice to the group is think long and hard about what you implement in training and how you feel doing it.  I had the advice of very good professionals and while the protocol works very well for many, it doesn't work for me.

The good news is after seeing my PT I know that my core is pretty damn strong so I won't need to go beserk on strength training to tackle a bad back this off season.  The bad news is I need to wait a full year to attempt to rectify my IM results.  While I wait, I think it is probably worth working a little harder on my swimming (I know I must have an inner fish somewhere).
