SNOW!!!! Big heavy wet snow for the last 5 hours. Probably be gone by morning but I'm racing in 2 days...? Is it too much to ask for a race without below freezing temps or snow this year? Maybe for Father's Day. sigh...

So assuming I can only buy one or the other this year- what is recommended?  A power tap wheel or a tri bike?  Assuming the PT is recommended as I am sure I still have a lot more speed to gain in my legs before my bike is my limiter (I have an entry level roadie), but new tri bikes are so cool!!

Emmanem - 2010-05-27 10:20 PM Anyone done a night race?  I'm looking at doing a race called midnight flight.  It's got 3 different distances (1 mile, 5k, 10k) I'm thinking I'm gonna do the 10k.  Its on September 3rd so I've got plenty of time to get training in, but it's at 11 at night.  Part of me thinks it'll be a lot of fun, but I'm wondering how tired I'm gonna be at that point... anyone done a race this late?  Thoughts??

I would love this and would register immediately.  My dream tri starts at sunset, I'd love to run in the dark.  Of course for the bike folks would have to go buy reflectors!

I went with the PT before the tri bike. I really like my road bike but it certainly won't take me where I need to go forever.  If you are ready or doing HIM I would think it's time for a tri bike.  If you are planning on sprints and olympic distance races the road bike and the PT would be more helpful...just my take.

The run relay Justin and I ran had many legs in the middle of the night.  Justin and I ran quite a few of the dark ones (only one of my four was in the daylight).  Lack of sleep has an impact for sure but I run mostly in the early, sleepy AM so most of my relay legs seemed pretty typical for my training.  I would say go for it!  Should be fun.

Well I'm sure you already know my recommendation so I'll throw out another point of view

A powertap will not make you faster, training/racing correctly will. Some people are able to do the training/racing correctly without extra tools.  I have a couple friends that can drop me without even trying on a bike and they don't have a powertap. If you don't plan on learning how to train/race with a PowerTap then don't bother or plan on getting a coach to show you.

A well fit tri bike might gain some speed on the bike leg but probably more time saved on the run since you ride a tri bike at a steeper seat angle which studies have shown improve run performance. This gain only happens once, in your first race with the bike.

The choice really comes down to instant gratification that's limited or tools that can make you a better athlete if you put in the work.

My recommendation is too gain as much weight as possible.... so when you start losing weight you think you are training correctly, but in actuality you are just gaining "free" speed because you've lost weight.

This is my current plan. When I plateau I guess I will have to actually start training like you smart folks.

Kel - I don't remember having tight hamstrings switching from road to tri.  I only recall leg pain all over after a hard bike ride

evondo - 2010-05-27 6:05 PM I never did but of course I never had a road bike and never learned to ride out of aero...

The last 1.5 weeks you've really ramped up your biking, I bet that's the cause of the tight hamstrings.  I'm always tight after taking some time off and starting back up but that may be just me

KelliD - 2010-05-27 9:54 AM Question for those of your riding tri bikes....when you started spending a lot of time riding in aero did/does it leave you with tight hamstrings?  Or do you feel like it works your hamstrings more?

I'm not in any kind of discomfort, this is just something I've noticed recently.  While I'm very comfortable on my bike (and more comfortable than I ever was on my road bike), I'm getting a proper bike in the next couple weeks.

So I'm an idiot. I had the wrong date down for my Tri this weekend. Race starts in 36 minutes, my clothes are still in the wash, and the start line is 130 miles away... Given the amount of SNOW on the ground right now there is no way to make it. Don't know why I had it in my head that this race was on Sunday, all of my others this year are Sunday races. Feeling about 6" tall right now. I would not have even noticed the date if I hadn't checked for wave times this morning. FrownCry dumb...

Sorry dude - it happens to all of us.  I registered my girls for a fun run on top their dance recital rehearsal for today.  They couldn't do both so they have a nice race t-shirt for a fun run they didn't get to do.

I have a new 5k PR (22:04) and a new max HR (201)!

My body really doesn't like these man-made hills (bridges) they occasionally throw on my race course.  I train a sea level.  I figure I will pass out before I die on the course so it's all good.

Hope everyone else is having a great start to their weekend.

I was thinking the same thing.  Especially since I signed up for a race today that I thought was in one lake but was in a whole other lake.  It's key that once you mess up you find out before even more damage is done.  Now, get out there and shovel.
