Try this (in practice) start off with your casual, long pull and then start singing a fast, upbeat song. Sounds silly, but I find the song in my head many times dictates my arm turnover. But also focus (while singing) on keeping your long pull when you increase your turnover. examples?? Our coach recommended a tempo trainer which I think would work the same way wouldn't it? |

But also focus (while singing) on keeping your long pull when you increase your turnover. I gotta be honest, I think that I am faster in the OW.... Based on looking at previous race times... most of the time in the pool it is just mindless swimming back n' forth (for me..) A couple things that are different for me in the pool vs. ows... 1st) Wetsuit- I have never swam in the pool with a wetsuit (ows faster) 2nd) Drafting- It doesn't happen in the pool very often (ows faster) 3rd) Sighting- I don't need to sight in a pool (pool faster) 4th) Breathing/Staying Relaxed (the pool wins for sure) Edited by swbkrun 2010-06-08 11:49 AM |

Gotta say, I think I am a crap OWS and it pisses me off. Now, I'm fine with my times being slower/different than they are in the pool. What I'm NOT fine with is knowing that people I can swim circles around in the pool are only moderately slower than I am in OW. Arrrrgh!! I'm guessing one thing working against me is that someone who is less effecient in the pool w/worse body position (i.e. lower in the water) benefits much more greatly from the added buoyancy of a wetsuit than I do. But it's frustrating. I am hoping/planning to do a better job in an IM swim because I'll have more "room" for other people to tire out. In a short race, lots of people can muscle it out for 400-500 yards, I think. Sun is shining and my bike is calling... Later, peeps!! Hey, let us slow swimmers have something! I tend to be faster in OW and I think it has to do with two things. First, I have a higher turnover because I don't need to leave my left hand out as long to breathe with a wetsuit on. Second, I just really want to get the he$$ out of the water before I get bashed by someone the size of Birdy. ![]() I'm not fat, I'm just big boned you jerk! ![]() Edited by swbkrun 2010-06-08 11:52 AM |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am meeting with a coach friday. I am hoping that I can afford it for a month or so and get some good information out of it. As soon as my guitar amp sells I will be getting the rest of my equipment and also a gift for the wife. I just need some direction on how to train in the workouts to increase my speed. I totally suck at the run right now. Last night I had over a 12 min pace and only made it 1.59 miles with a lot of walking. My left shin just gets really sore (not pain but more like when my quads are exhausted from a hard ride). I assume that the more I run the easier it will get. Any tips would also help out. I was thinking of getting a compression sleeve to see if that helped keep my lower legs in better form. |

Can I convert it to seconds and try lol Yep, the goal is to do #1 in a day and build to #5. Maybe for IM #2. Mark, I echo what Andy says. It really is all about building endurance and that takes time. When I started running in 2003, I began with a run/walk program. Back then, I didn't even time it. I ran from pole to pole and then walked a pole. As I got stronger, I ran 5 mins and walked 1 min and continued to build from there. You are just starting out. We have all been there, we have all been extremely impatient and we have all learned that Rome wasn't built in a day. Enjoy the things you can do like that bike ride that almost killed you....remember? Any good coach will not structure a program to make you faster this early in your career. He or she will structure one to help you build some aerobic capacity safely (meaning no injuries like a stress fracture or a pulled calf muscle). I know this isn't what you want to hear...I gave this advice to another MG peep and she no longer comes around....I hope that won't be the case with you! |

Hey, Mark, what ever happened to the orthotics that your doctor had recommended? I cant afford them and just went with a pair from Roadrunner Sports. I have put about 15 miles on them in the new shoes and it feels great. My shins get sore but being a huge dude I think it comes w/ the territory. My feet feel wonderful. I am being very concious and making sure not to overtrain. |
