My Iron Brothers and Sisters, It is with deepest regrets that I am not there with you in Couer d' Alene right now.  It is now just a few short hours until the gun goes off, and I wish you all Godspeed and great luck. I know most of you won't read this until you awaken tomorrow morning on what will surely be a momentous day for you, no matter whether this is your first Ironman or the next chapter in a long Ironman career.   You'll be happy to know that I am still following your posts and will follow you all throughout your day tomorrow. It has been a bittersweet week for me, seeing your pre-race nervousness and excitement, seeing the group pictures of your swim gatherings, and seeing your incredible enthusiasm, fear, and courage as you face the coming battle.  You'll also be happy to know that I saluted you all with, not one, but two Makers-Marks-on-the-Rocks tonight.   I think it was the only way I could get through dinner.  I'm back in an arm sling and struggling with the realization that I probably also won't be able to compete in the Boulder 70.3 in August (which I am also sadly pre-registered for).  I've come to realize that my healing is going to take far longer than I had hoped.  At this point I'm even hoping that I can recover enough to train for and compete again in the Augusta 70.3, my hometown race at the end of September. I decided to cut my loses and keep my airfare and just use it as a vacation for me and my wonderful wife after a very trying and emotional month since my accident on May 28th.  So, we here happily ensconced in Seattle, touring the area for a few days, just glad to be way from the heat and humidity of the Southeast.  I elected not to come to CdA just to hang out this week......it was a very tough decision, but I think I made the right decision.  We've had some incredible experiences this week.  I've spent some unworldly time in the forests high up on Ranier, and I spent a few minutes alone today with Hendrix's Woodstock Stratocaster, so it's been a trip well spent. We head to Bainbridge tomorrow for a quite day, and I'm sure I'll spend a lot of it checking on your journeys. By the way, csharp1171 is a close personal friend of mine, as he lives and trains with the rest of us Ironmen in Augusta, GA.  If you're using his great system at racedaytracker.com keep in mind that he is far braver than most of us.  He recently took a great giant leap of faith off that proverbial cliff, and left a good job to set up his own business and become self employed and master of his own destiny.  RDT is a good sampling of his skills. Please contribute wisely for his service if you use it, karma does pay forward.  And if you have a need, or if you have any influence in such matters, consider checking in with him the next time your business has a need for a talented Software Development Consultant.  So, again, good luck to you all.  Stay safe, but race well.  Remember it is a race, but foremost it is an endurance race.  It's going to be a long day, no matter what.  But at the end of the day, you will be an Ironman.  And even though you may have time goals, keep in mind that 99 percent of the people who find out you are an Ironman will never ask you what your finishing time was, they will just be amply impressed with the fact that you are an Ironman.  So when it gets tough out there...and it will....just remember, don't give up, finish the race.  You will truly have bragging rights for life. Best regards, Randy Cantu

Last night I had the best pre-first-ironman night.  At 11pm the fire alarm went off in my hotel and we had to rush in the parking lot.  The firefighters showed up after a good 30 minutes (!?) and started inspecting the building.  After another 30 minutes they said everything was OK and we could get back to our room.  Turns out that a jacka$$ was smoking in his room Frown  Hope you guys had a better night sleep than mine...

Have a great race everyone!

Thank you for those words Randy. As someone with an injury I thought would keep me out of this race, I understand what you are feeling. I wish you all the best in your recovery and a continued great time in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Brad

In case anyone's wondering what happened to me:

The 54 degree water ended up wrecking many people's days including mine. For those who are tracking our group. I ended up in Medical at Mile 40 of the bike due to severe cramping and disorientation possibly still lingering from my epic 1:54 in the water - UGH! I managed to make it back to transition where they took my chip at Mile 56. I'll be heading down to the finish line later to cheer in our late finishers. I rode the first 20 miles with Ashley (Nerdjock) and she looked awesome!

Just wanted everyone to know I was okay and I'm actually cool with the DNF. It just wasn't my day today.

I'm so sorry to hear about your race.  I was fine in the water until the 1.8 mile mark.  I started to get chills in the water at that point, even with a neo cap and booties.  The last 20 minutes of the swim for me was very tough.

Edit: Did you put out the BT Don't Care HB sign on the run?  I touched it both times for good luck.

Awwww Bonnie!! I'm so sorry! I kept looking for you on the run. I LOVED the HB sign on English Point and on the run, too. Thanks for doing those! That water was cold cold cold... It took me 2.5 hours to feel my toes on the bike. I kid you not.

Done and back at the hotel a total physical wreck. PR'ed by about 25 minutes, which I am happy about especially given the change in the run course. Those hills were brutal!!!!

Saw Brittany a few times looking awesome. Saw Spudone at the start and end (great race!!). Saw Ashley out on the run. Nice job today, folks. Epic.

Yep - those were mine We made them all yesterday!

Thanks for good thoughts everyone. I ended up going to Urgent Care and got a course of antibiotics and a heavy narcotic cough medicine. The verdict appears to be that I very likely took in so much lake water that between that and the cold water and cramps I was just wrecked for going out on the bike. I'm pleased I made it through 50% of the course today given how I feel. I'm thinking of going balls out on a local 1/2 IM in 2 weeks.

Thoughts?

Thanks for your support guys. My race was going awesome. I was 80th place off the bike and passed 20 folks in my AG by mile 3 but then I stepped badly in a pothole and injured my foot. I spent some time in the med tent @ mile 16 and again at the finish and the consensus is that it is indeed broken. I have had a metatarsal stress fracture and this is what it feels like butler intense and throbbing. I did finish the race, ran 15 minutes faster than 2008 ANC ran my fastest split on the return on the second lap. Need to go someplace and find some perspective because I am pissed. This may screw up my fall marathon.

I just got back from watching the last 90 minutes at the finish line, what an awesome scene. The swim was definitely brutal - i tooks so many shots to the face that my vision was impaired for the first half of the bike, and my right eye is still bugging me. But what an absolutely gorgeous day out there - congrats to all for putting in their best effort.

Was a good day. I finished. 13:16:54. Started cramping ing the swim. So, I took tHe first loop on the bike easy. No complaints here except no one told me how tough this is to finishNerdjock- I saw ya on the run but realized who you were after I went by. Liked the uniform for the run.Nice job by all who competed.

I had a magical day today and completed my first and last full Ironman.  Killed my goal and finished in 10:50:40.  All of my hours payed off bigtime.  This flatlander chewed up the hills and did the run under 4 hours as hoped.

Edit: Thanks again for all of the help from everyone.

I was fighting my stomach all day. But came in w/ a 12:55 versus 14:10 last year. And I barely did any run training since May because I was recovering from a calf pull. So overall very pleased.I think mango finished right behind me but I never saw her . Awesome 1st IM for her!
