I dunno -- from where I stand, those don't look THAT crazy to me. The harder stuff in there is the pacing, not the time/distance. But for me, as a first-timer, the coaches I'm working with just talk about teaching my body to go long. I keep feeling like I can run faster off the bike, and they both keep reminding me to slow down, teach my body to ease into it and go long. My mindset with the race around the corner is "It's going to be a LONG day. Just another long workout, putting all the pieces together. Just keep moving."

Maybe next time around I'll care more about speed. Don't get me wrong, I do have time goals, but we all know the numero uno goal is to finish with a smile, even if that's in 16:59:59. A friend of mine who is a killer cyclist and decent runner is also battling an injury and he's dialed his expectations waaaaaaaaaay back. It's sad and frustrating, but it's also the beast that is IM. A partner of my PT (who is a triathlon coach) said it really well: Ironman will find and expose and magnify any weakness in your body. Finally did a Master Swim class tonight.  It felt good to have someone else define the workout and provide some feedback along the way.  It was an 1800m workout that felt just right.  This class has been offered at my gym at no cost to members for some time but I never took advantage of it until tonight.  Should have done this a long time ago.

Terps421 - 2010-06-08 8:05 PM I got my bike back with the new chain, took it out on some hills, downshifted front cog, chain stuck, pedals not turning, down I went. 200 $ and now I am a little timid about riding again.
Any ideas of what the problem is or what I can do about it?
Linda

Where did you take it?  Not sure where exactly you are located.

Sounds like they messed up the shifting on the FD and it threw the chain off.

Depending on what kind of bike you ride they do make a chain catcher that will stop the chain from shifting off on the inside, Sam has one on her bike.

Hope you are ok.

Didn't make the race, couldn't find a sitter that could get here in time so Sam and I went and ran our own.

LOL, was able to run appx 6:30 for the first mile but it was all down hill from there.  Probably could have done a bit better if it was a race, more motivation or something like that but ended up averaging around 7:00/mile (6:57).

Still fastest 5k, haven't worked on any speed drills this year so should get there soon since the focus is now on oly's.

After the run we had beers and BBQ, mmm good.

I assume you do that in one day? Can I convert it to seconds and try lol

Yep, the goal is to do #1 in a day and build to #5. Maybe for IM #2.

Mark, I echo what Andy says.  It really is all about building endurance and that takes time.  When I started running in 2003, I began with a run/walk program.  Back then, I didn't even time it.  I ran from pole to pole and then walked a pole.  As I got stronger, I ran 5 mins and walked 1 min and continued to build from there.  You are just starting out.  We have all been there, we have all been extremely impatient and we have all learned that Rome wasn't built in a day.  Enjoy the things you can do like that bike ride that almost killed you....remember?  Any good coach will not structure a program to make you faster this early in your career.  He or she will structure one to help you build some aerobic capacity safely (meaning no injuries like a stress fracture or a pulled calf muscle).  I know this isn't what you want to hear...I gave this advice to another MG peep and she no longer comes around....I hope that won't be the case with you!

Now, Now...I'm still here. I'm just lurking.   Mark, listen to the girl. She knows what she's talking about.  I was going to pipe up anyway and tell you to save the money on the coach.  You have a LOT of basics to work on.  I promise you he is going to tell you the same thing we are or he should. Most of us spend money on coaches so we are singing the same song.  Heck, I use to coach my coach..ie...I sounded like a recorder.  Kind of annoying for him.   Use the run walk and stretch our you shins using bands before and after your workouts.  If you gotta get a coach now have him look at the swim.  That is the one thing that gives great immediate feedback.

Two posts in one night. Wow!!! Aren't you blessed.

The only thing that comes to mind with this is that I remember going to a pro talk and hearing a female pro say she never runs more than an hour max (usually 30-45min) after a bike as it's just to get the legs moving and turning over.

However, I would think your mental game would be pretty confident after this.

BTW...I was given walk/run instructions today from PT.  Crossing my fingers that I don't feel any pain in the morning and I can start a whole 4 min walk/1 min run 3x a week.

Matt, I've been battling a 2 year injury....START SLOW...it's ok.  You will get there.

Hey Kelly--you weren't the peep I was talking about, but if it got you to post I am ok with it!  You know I started the run 1'/walk 3' when I was rehabbing my stress fracture. While it was a little frustrating I was thankful to be able to start to run even a little bit.....let us know how you are progressing.  You put off the prolo right?

Me!!!!

Starting off my weekend with the Trek 100 on Saturday which is really a HUGE event in the area...well over 3,000 riders. Not a race, but my plan calls for 2 hours in Z3 which up to now I have not done a good job hitting.  Going to  work it harder this time and be very mindful of maintaining steady Watts.

Sunday it is the Capitol View Sprint. Assuming I have somethng in the tank after Saturday, it's an "all out" affair.  My plan is to be strong in the swim and start in the front left corner of my wave, bike will be 100% effort on this rolling hill course and the only crapshoot will be the run.  It is cross country and given the rain could be a wreck. Won't jepordize the foot for the 5K.....but hoping to be able to improve my times for the VT!

Might have the Marine Corps 17.75k race if it rains.  Signed up then realized it was on a Saturday which is the last soccer game of the season, so hopefully it rains friday and they cancel the Saturday games.

Don't carry anything in my jersey when racing, but in saddle bag, 2 tubes, 2 C02, C02 chuck, crack pipe, tire lever, & very small pump.  When not racing a patch kit goes in there also.

When not racing in my jersey, always have phone (with GPS), ziplock bag with credit card, license and cash, gel or two, powerbar, anything else I need.  Cycling jersey pockets are awesome.

I am.  I am doing the Lawyers Have a Heart 10K -- raises money for the American Heart Association.  First half mile is up hill, but the rest of the course is pretty flat.  Simple out and back along one road.  Strategy is to relax and keep a comfortable pace until  the turn around, and then to increase my pace for each of the final three miles.  I know I won't be the fastest on our team (one of my colleagues won the race in the past), but I want to do respectably because it has bragging rights both inside and outside the firm.

Nothing for me this weekend. Hopefully it doesn't rain so I can get one more good 10K run and a longer (40-50K) bike ride in to be ready for next weekend. I don't carry anything in my bike jersey most of it is on the bike. For the longer races I tape Gu onto the crossbar of my bike and use Infinit for the most part. For training only water and Infinit or Perpetuem when going longer than an hour or so.

I was looking at the races in my area and I think I am going to end the season with a bang. There are sprint races Sept 4, 11 and 18th and if I can convince my wife to be without me for those days I am going to do them. It shouldn't take too much convincing for her to tell me to get lost for those days   I am already signed up for the Sept 4 race as it is in my home town and it would be just wrong on several different levels to miss that one.

Mett - 2010-06-08 11:18 AM I am meeting with a coach friday. I am hoping that I can afford it for a month or so and get some good information out of it. As soon as my guitar amp sells I will be getting the rest of my equipment and also a gift for the wife. I just need some direction on how to train in the workouts to increase my speed. I totally suck at the run right now. Last night I had over a 12 min pace and only made it 1.59 miles with a lot of walking. My left shin just gets really sore (not pain but more like when my quads are exhausted from a hard ride). I assume that the more I run the easier it will get. Any tips would also help out. I was thinking of getting  a compression sleeve to see if that helped keep my lower legs in better form.

Hey, Mark, what ever happened to the orthotics that your doctor had recommended?

I cant afford them and just went with a pair from Roadrunner Sports. I have put about 15 miles on them in the new shoes and it feels great. My shins get sore but being a huge dude I think it comes w/ the territory. My feet feel wonderful. I am being very concious and making sure not to overtrain.

My 0.02 cents......make come across as a little hard but.....

Dude, your ~~270 lbs and your doc says you require orthotics to run and you say you can't afford them but you want to hire a coach???
Scratch the coach from your plans, and get the orthotics. You're new to this. Your ~~270ish. You will do more harm than good running with out them. You tell a good coach you have been told to get orthotics, he/she will make you get them before you continue on. You will hurt without them.

Precisely.  I do not think he environmental disaster unfolding in the Gulf will be resolved by November, so I think they are going to go with either the duathalon format or a pool swim.  Need to be ready...

Me too....finally.  I will also be at the Capital View Tri this weekend with Suzy (Maybe it's a MG race) but I will be doing the Oly, which is my focus distance for the year.  That being said, I am also focused on speed and my race plan is to be between 2:30 and 2:45 based on the shape of the off road running course.

This is my B race for the year and my race strategy is to be out of the water and through T1 in under a 1/2 hour ... off the bike and through T2 in under 1:15.....run under :50 based on the shape of the course and the weather.  Smile

This is a public service announcement from a friend who got hit and run by a car 3 years ago and broke his leg and was separated from his bike on the side of a country road by a couple of hundred yards.
Keep your phone in your jersey, not on your bike, when riding without support!

He figures he laid on the side of the road for at least 2 hours "waiting" for help because he didn't have his phone.  No way he could drag himself back to his bike with the shape his leg was in.  If his phone was in his jersey he could have called someone.  He also figures this probably increased his rehab time and healing time by several months.  Don't want to freak anybody out...but get everybody thinking.  He still rides, almost everyday!

The entire family is participating in the Susan G Koman 5K for Breast Cancer on Saturday.  We are part of a team in honor of our neighbor's sister.  I'm envisioning carrying my youngest the last mile. We'll see.  Then on Sunday I have a one mile swim race.  Going to see if I can fix some of those open water swim issues we've been discussing.  If we can find a sitter I'll join the hubby in his 30 mile ride after the swim.  He is doing the swim as well so we might bike to the lake, swim, then bike out of there.

Linda and Doug, are you swimming on Sunday?  It is part of the fs series of Trysports Triangle Swim Series and it goes out of Jordan at the Duke Half race location.  Plenty of spots still left and a good safe way to get some open water time in.

I know I won't be the fastest on our team (one of my colleagues won the race in the past), but I want to do respectably because it has bragging rights both inside and outside the firm.

oh, ramping up the running for the big dualthlon in november i see.  seriously, you worried they might cancel the swim?

Precisely.  I do not think he environmental disaster unfolding in the Gulf will be resolved by November, so I think they are going to go with either the duathalon format or a pool swim.  Need to be ready...

This is going to be interesting to watch.  Pensacola is seeing stuff from the spill (has been for several days now) so it is only a short time until it hits PCB.  My heart goes out to all the IMFL peeps.  It is tough enough to prepare for the race itself, now add in the disaster and wow.

I can't imagine the logistics of a 2.4 mile pool swim for 2500+ folks (and get them across the finish line by midnight), however it might be possible to rework logistics and look at the bay for the swim.  Not sure how long the permits would take, but hopefully there is enough time and they are already working on their back-up plan(s) in case the current ocean swim can't happen.  IMFL is a big event for PCB, so I am sure they will work with the WTC folks to do everything they can to help it happen.

Steve, I was thinking of you this morning as I was doing the dishes.  The next time you or Kim are at Babies R Us, pick up a bottle drying rack.  They are the best thing for drying water bottles.  I was so mad at myself for throwing my old ones away.

Another good tip I'll share with some of our new members:    A great place to store water bottles is in a behind the door hanging shoe rack.  I was so sick of opening cubboard doors and having bottles fall on me. One day I saw my neighboor was using one of these for her baby bottles and I thought it was a wonderful idea.

Linda

Only thing I can think of without seeing it is (assuming the chain ha adequate length) that a derailleur, front or rear, is missaligned and the chain got caught between the derailleur cage and the chain ring or sprocket. Hope you are not hurt.

Doug

Linda - sorry to hear about your crash, it is tough to get back up on that bike again - as a confidence builder throw in a few trainer rides so that you can overcome the mental issue that will be around the bicycle mechanics.   As far as a cause, my first thought was the same as Dougs, chain got caught in a bind  - most likely with the front derailleaur....
