To prevent bottles from launching, you just need to buy cheap aluminum cages and bend them so they really hold the water bottles tight. I didn't launch a single bottle riding the LP course.

True, but as James mentioned, the issue is the refill water bottles they hand out. They don't fit in snuggly and people launch them like crazy.

Again, I don't care that much but it would really suck to crash because of a bottle etc.
Lots of people use the rear bottle holders, so I'm likely in the very small minority here that doesn't like them

Good point. If you're not comfortable relying on the on-course nutrition, then what other options do you have, for an IM? If you miss a bottle hand up on the course, do you stop and turn around to get water?

I did 1 super concentrated nutrition bottle for loop 1 & just took water from the course.  Stopped at SN for my second nutrition bottle for loop 2.

Adding rubber bands to your rear bottle holder keeps bottles from launching...just attach to cage, then other side goes around your bottle...easy solution to avoid launches.

A BTer whose parents are captains of first bike aid station pointed out start the bike with less liquid as you climb out of Placid, get fluid at aid station for the descent into Keene which I did. The aid stations are every 10 miles no need to carry lots of fluid if you can live off the course.

I plan to sign up for LP '11 if I can get in. I had planned on doing RI 70.3 in early July as the have sign ups for '11 LP, but with some injury issues I'm not doing the race. So I hope to be able to get in on line but staying at a place with iffy internet and no real good place to go in town to get secure connection. If not I'll do community slot.

I have never missed a bottle but you are free to do what you want. There are no rules against rear bottle holders, heck Bryan uses them so what do I know?

You know a lot.

Yes, I have alway had rear hydration and have never lost a bottle in a race although it does happen to some folks. Honestly, I have had to dodge a handful of them in my 4 years of racing, but it's not an epidemic at least as far as I can see. I used to use the cheap metal cages I could sinch down and now use those Gorilla Grip carbon cages from X-Lab. Those suckers are tight.

My guess when you are in the FOP you don't really see the carnage left behind of dropped stuff from other racers...but then again AZ is three loop course.

I do see it all at least twice! But in fairness, the roads here are pretty darn good as we don't get frost heaves or rain to cause pot holes.

OK, some questions on logistcis with T1/bike racking.

biked is racked night before.

do we have access race morning?

can we check our tires?  what about bottles?  do they need to be on the bikes night before?  and computers?  I use a 705, so that wont be on the bike over night...does that go in my T1 bag, or will I hvae access to mount it before the swim?

PennState - 2010-06-24 12:17 PM Kathy it almost makes me want to do LP 2011 hearing that you are in. Almost I agree with the first aid station. My setup will be 1 cage on the frame and the PD aero bottle. I will have the aero bottle full at the start, but nothing in my frame cage as I will pick up 2 bottles (water and powerbar drink) at the first aid station.

I recall you saying last year before the race you didn't think you were going to sign up, but you did.

If you decide '11 is your HIM year, you'll have to be like Bryan and hang out in the LP '11 thread as you add a lot to the thread.

I'm not doing the race but read this thread a few times a day. LP has a special place in my heart. I'm glad the plan is I get to go back next year. I remember last year the day we could register driving to do an errand wondering if I should instead be sitting at my computer trying to sign up. I came home and checked and Active said it was still open, my husband said sign up, but it was full by the time I got to the pay part.

KWin - 2010-06-24 11:02 PM Things have been "good news, bad news" around here and I am having a sort of involuntary "pre-taper week" before going back to training.

Rode my first 100-miler (on a FLAT course) last week and felt awesome at the end. Not tired, not sore, nothing, could easily have gone for a long run or biked many more miles. But like I say, the course was pancake flat! Felt fine the days after too, no tiredness or soreness. So that's something.

My mother died last week after a very long illness. She was 82 and had a good life, except for the 9-month hospice stay at the end. She died peacefully, never had any pain during her illness, and I was able to say goodbye to her and tell her how much I loved her shortly before she passed.  She lived in Wisconsin, so we went out there for a memorial service; her actual burial will be in the upstate NY town where she was born, and where my dad is buried. So, I'm in the middle of traveling, grieving, and now am fighting a respiratory infection and it has all cut down my training drastically. I hope to get back to it by this weekend and plan to do IMLP in memory of her and my dad.

This will be my last IM for a while--like Witty said, it takes too much time away from other things in life. But, I plan to do half-IMs and Olys, and/or get back to ultrarunning and get into long-distance swimming, and continue biking.

On a lighter note, I gotta check out that "Are you GAY?" thread that tasr said might be beating us for the title of "Longest BT thread ever." Since I am gay, it should be good for a few laughs!

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.  I'm very glad you were able to say goodbye.

Great job on the 100miler.

What's on the Training Menu this weekend peoples?

I've got a 4-mile road race tomorrow morning (then taking my son to a Toy Story 3 Movie birthday party!) .  Sunday is a 112-mile Bike, followed by a 10k transition Run.  Good times ahead!
