DO NOT FREAK ABOUT THE TEMP!!!!

Ok I got that out...it was funny because we did a group BT swim last year on Fri am (7 or 7:30 since we swam about the 1/2 course) and we were all talking about what we planned to wear and it was ALL over the place.  You will be very suprised how "warm" you feel even with low temps---I considered keeping my wetsuit on till the T1 tent but didn't--used the strippers right on the dock and did the long run wet---no big deal!  You are already warmed up at that point and even though you are at an "easy/all day" pace you feel good.  IF you are worried about being cold then go the layers route---especially layers that you can quickly, easily shed and dump!!!

A side note to this:  I did a cool ride the other morning (meaning first ride since the spring that it wasn't warm/hot) and it wasn't as "cold" as B2B last year---I dressed warmer then for B2B and felt chilly YET at B2B I was super comfortable---race day (especially for a full that you've trained all year for...) does amazing things to your mind and body!!!!  Just because you have been cold in the past or think you might be on race day doesn't mean that your body will agree with you in the HEAT of battle!

Another Century ride tomorrow. Seagull Century. I did it last year and loved it!

Just looking at the schedule, 1, one, ONE, hanna, uno, ein, more long run. 3 hours. A couple/few longish bikes and this is my second to last 90+ mile ride. Then taper.

Good Lord what have I signed up for?

Well just ordered a pair of the shoe covers for the bike portion.  Louisiana does get cool enough in the winters (nights down into the 30's, considerably better then when I lived in Wisconsin) and the shoe covers will be reused.  Doubt the swim socks will get much re-use but who knows may do the complete B2B IM next year.  I like the trash bag/newspaper idea but will have to try both out ahead of time.

Going for an IM swim today and a full ride next week.  I think I have been spending too much time on the trainer and my knee is not liking it.  If today's swim goes well then I will feel prepared and the rest of my training will be to gain a little speed and suffer a little less.  An Oly Aquabike later this month to either confirm my training or will make me realize how much suffering I am in for.

FWIW, it was 50 at the start of my long ride this morning. I was in a short sleeved bike shirt and a long sleeved bike shirt (half zipper) over that. Regular tri shorts. Legs were fine. Body was a tad chilly for about an hour but NOT a big deal and never enough to want more clothing. Had gloves on for about 4 hours and actually finished the ride in the same clothes even though it was about 75 when I was done. I guess I am so used to the heat, 50 feels cold. 70 even feels "fresh".

Daniel, I am with you on the count-down of these long workouts thing. I have 2 more 2.5hr runs and 2 more long rides. Lots of other stuff in between, but just 2 more of each of the "key" workouts left. I must say, after 5+hrs on the bike, I decided to do a transition run (just 2 miles). I have no earthly idea how you get your head around another 24! I felt pretty good and kept the pace controlled but sheesh, another 24 miles of that! Yikes. :-) Can't say I really enjoy the 100 mile rides that much! But I do really enjoy the challenge and seeing that graph of time spent training going up. :-)

If you're doing the long runs (and you are) you'll be ready.  Don't think "24 more to go" when you hit mile two or you'll drive yourself nuts!  Focus on keeping the pace/effort you know you need to get through, and otherwise just shut your mind and enjoy the moment and run!  My 2c.

I know what you mean about being used to the heat.  I wore a long sleeve jersey for a short ride today, and by all rights I should have been dying from the heat by the end, but it sort of felt...normal.  I need to get some cold rides in before B2B!

First time at this distance, advice on the special needs bag for the bike would be appreciated. Would also love any other race advice, not scared of the distance but do respect it, am just looking for advice from experienced long course athlete's. Can't wait for the race.

'long brick' today to test nutrition etc. -- 150 mile bike and 3 mile run.  Smile

The temperature changed more than 30 degrees during my ride (50 at the start, 80+ at the end), so not entirely like what I guess we might get during the race, but subtract 10 at both ends.  It was useful to have to ride through that temperature change.

Now I'm enjoying IM coverage.

Got doored by a cab in DC this afternoon while riding my bike out for the third bike leg of a triple brick. Still got about 80 miles on the bike and 9 running. Now nursing a very bloody knee and icing a sore pulled quad

I'm not sure about B2B's policy in re the bike SN bag, but at M-dot races, there's no guarantee you'll get it back at the end...For that reason, I plan to go minimalist: spare tube/cartridge; a Krustable(food); a couple of Gu's. FWIW, unless something about the ride to that point is off, I don't plan to stop.

The best advice I got before my first 140.6 was to watch bike pace by riding my own race..Like a lot of guys, getting passed on the bike is like having a red cape waved at me. Supress this emotion. You'll hear this again and again, but the guys pushing the big watts at the 45th mile are frequently the ones you'll see again on the run.

Good luck with your training..

Alltom---great advice on BOTH!  I just had a spare tube/CO2 cartridge in bike SN last year---no flat till that point (or at all but to that point was what was important) so I didn't bother to grab SN bag.  Don't remember if we got it back or not....  And as a faster swimmer bike pacing is EVERYTHING!!!!  Last year all the top bikers (except the overall winner and guy doing bike leg of relay) passed me---several like I was standing still---I kept telling myself to stay in MY box and ride my race--after about 20 miles that was over so I just needed to stay calm for the first little bit of the bike!

I agree on that advice too.  In both bike and run SN bags last year (IMKY) I put only things I did not mind never seeing again.

I'm a slow swimmer, so I do a lot more passing than being passed on the bike, but when I do get passed, it is very very hard not to respond.  'Waving a red flag' -- I like that way of putting it.

How was it??  I was going to do it with a couple of guys from work (so I could pull them as they put it!!!) but they backed out and well I was only doing it for them since raced Halfmax last weekend.  The weather was great but I hear there's always some wind on that ride---which is good training for you for B2B!!

Do it! I've done it for two years now and it's the best ride I've done. Last year it rained for the first hour and it was STILL the best ride I've done.

Yeah, wind hammers you on the way back from the island and all I thought about was that is perfect for the second half of the B2B ride, keep it at 80 RPM and take what you can get. Still gotta run afterwords.

C'mon down next year, barring something seriously wrong I'll be there again.

DanielG--I got 99.96 on my Garmin for the Seagull. I think they count the turn down the golf course road for the first rest stop as part of the course mileage. If you turned off your garmin right as you turned you might have come up a little short.

It was my first 100 mile ride, and I couldn't have asked for better. Gorgeous day. My favorite part was swimming in the ocean at mile 62. The water felt great! Definitely a repeater.

And yes, I had the same thought that the 37+ miles of headwind back was good training for B2B.

Early on there was discussion about BT'rs getting together for a swim Friday morning. Is that still the plan? I'm a mere HIM participant but would love to join the group for a preview swim Friday morning.

We did last year and it was neat. HIM, IM, who cares, we'll have fun.

Also, where are we going to late lunch/early dinner Friday?

Last year it was here:
Fat Tony's Italian Pub?

Wilmington, NC 28401-3944

Is that okay with people or does someone have another idea?

I think that for mortals like me, it's best to think of an iron-distance race as a race to determine how fast is your slow. Put another way, how fast can you go when you're going slow. Think about it, for endurance athletes, this is the purpose of heart-rate training. Anyway, this helps me pull out my red flag.

Dunno. 4:00 PM? 5:00 PM? Time enough to sit and vibrate but still get a good night's attempted sleep in prior to the gun.

Just took a look on their menu and it looks GOOD! 4 or 5 both sounds good to me but I gotta check with my better half if he's in.

Def In for the 7 am swim!

Hows the training going peeps? We are inside a month! You guys getting your centuries in? Long runs?

Where's everyone staying? I'm at the Blockade runner. Been planning to go down on Tuesday and sort of mini-vacation the week prior. Then yesterday I check the mail, and a friggin summons for jury duty on the 10th. I gotta get out of this. Gonna post for ideas on the tri talk forum.

Just got my next-to-last long ride done and last run over 15 is tomorrow..

Not doing anything stupid and getting hurt is the primary objective from here on in..It's a modest goal I'm going to keep close to my heart.

Training going good here.  Did a 56 mile tempo ride today followed by a brick run.  Doing a Century Sunday.  This will be my third century in the last 5 weeks.  I will do my last the following weekend.    Next week doing a 15 mile run or 2.5 hours.  Looking foward to the race!
