I have a long ride planned for tomorrow, likely over 100 miles above IM effort, and then a 3 hr ride next sat. The rest of my week will involve a lot of swimming (you can cram in this at the last minute can't you?) and some shorter runs as my calf needs some TLC. Also watched the Olympics 10,000m and the 100m semi's. The 100m final is going to be big time. Actually, you can. For IMMT, just. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Oh, almost forgot. The highlight of my weekend was saving a drowning patridge during my OWS. I was happily swimming and 30 feet from shore come face to face with a "blob". Scared the poop out of me because i thought it was a beaver. Got to shore, looked properly and I saw it was a bird really struggling to swim. So I grabbed the canoe and went to get it I figured it just needed to recoup, so I left it in the canoe. Came back 2 hours later it was still there. So I put him in a shoebox and brought him inside because I didn't want dogs or other to get him. We watched the Olympics together. I put him on the 2nd floor balcony so no animals would get him and the next morning he had flown away, after pooping all over my deck. I think he's a patridge. That or a triathlete bird since he didn't know how to swim I chicked him on the swim
Is this a partridge ? |

If anyone is interested, Dave VM one of my OWS buddies is attempting a Catalina Island crossing tonight/tomorrow (20 miles). He has a blog set-up if anyone wants to follow his progress www.dvmswimfromcatalina.wordpress.com And, I think "chicked" is a compliment, FWIW. Edited by blbriley 2012-08-05 4:38 PM |

About Dave, not about being chicked. I got yellow-fuzzy-chicked on my long run today. |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Fred D - 2012-08-05 1:28 PMOh and is 'chicked' an offensive term? Looks like that thread on tri talk is exploding on both sides IME. I think this is another case of people being overly sensitive. I don't really understand how it can be construed negatively towards a female athlete though...to me it is more positive and is a phrase people use to describe a great performance/finish on behalf of a female athlete. I beat all of my friend's male cousins in a 70.3 a few years ago and they all joke that they got chicked--I finished about 30min ahead of the fastest of them. Chrissie has chicked male pros in many races....and I think that is awesome. Maybe the male pros don't though...but to me that is their problem? I think triathon/endurance racing is so vast in regards to how people perform race to race due to weather, different course types, altitude, where people are in their training cycle that everyone at one point has been chicked, geezered, strollered, whatever. Just my thoughts. |

A friend and I were talking the other day about two separate rides we did. We both were absolutely destroyed on hills by some casual riders, then realized they were using battery-assist bikes. So now we call it "getting batteried" |

People have been banned for lesser offenses!!! Then people started saying it's ok to be chicked but not geezerd. What happend to respect thy elders ? Old people are sensitive to these thing !!! Where are the mods when you need them

![]() Had a good race. Lots of strong riders showed up. It was really strange though because there was no moves made. 3 laps, and a teammate of mine attacked on the 2nd lap. He got about 150 meters, then the group slowly reeled him back in. After the 2nd lap, I realized that everyone was still fresh...so I attacked on the base of the climb on the 3rd lap. I was expecting people to chase, and I was hoping that we could form a group of about 8 so that we could work together to the finish instead of having a bunch sprint. But for some reason, nobody chased...I got about 200m away, then realized it was pointless to continue 1 vs 30. So we get down to the finishing straightaway, I'm 3rd wheel and feeling pretty good. But the sprint started earlier than I expected with 8 guys coming from all different directions behind me. There was a touch of wheels between riders in front of me, and before I knew it I was in about 15th and 20 meters back from the leader. I jumped, but it was way too late. I had plenty of power left, but I had to weave through everyone in front and managed a top 10 finish...maybe 8th out of all the Cat 4/5s? There were two guys in my category that were clearly ahead of me, but I was given 4th. I highly doubt it though since I was right next to the guy that finished 2nd. Whatever though. No big deal. I just thought it was funny that they tried to use an Iphone video to determine the finish order. LOL. I don't think they were expecting a bunch finish...I know I wasn't. Either way, I felt great...which is a good sign of my training for my more important races later in the month. I definately learned some things about the sprint finish as I was in good position, but had horrible reaction time. I also underestimated how far I could have gone out from. I crossed the line and I wasn't even close to red lining. |

Pro![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Nice race, Jason! After a (nearly) 12 hour training week, I'm ready for a recovery week! I slept in today, and still took three small naps. Good news in a bunch of people on my masters team are training for the La Jolla Rough Water Swim, so there is a distance practice every day - not just Monday and Friday. |

We are in Minot ND visiting our son in the Air Force then driving to Minnesota tomorrow. Totally unrelated anyone know why almost all the track runners in Olympics seem to be wearing yellow shoes? |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Kathy - really glad to have you join us! I was just wondering the same thing - just now I was watching the 1500 prelims and in the current heat 9 out 10 of the athletes are wearing them. Googled it, and it seems that they are mostly Nike's new "flyknit" shoe. Nike is giving them away to any olympic athlete that will wear them. The upper is supposedly knitted like a sock and thus seamless. It seems that many of the track athletes have taken them up on the offer, and you will see tons of them on the podium with the rest of the athletes. You will also see some greem ones, but it looks like most athletes are opting for the yellow ones. Still not as cool as Michael Johnson's gold ones in Atlanta. Adidas has also released a similar shoe that is red and you will see a few track athletes wearing those. Interestingly enough there is an athlete in the current 1500 heat (Ali, I think) who looks like he is wearing one of each. So much for "nothing new on race day." |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wow Jason - what a great race - in my admittedly very limited experience it is kind weird in a 4/5 race that you did not get at least a few to try to go away. Sounds like you were pretty much where you needed to be at the end though. If you had won a bunched sprint I would be wondering what the hell you are doing on a triathlete board however.... tri808 - 2012-08-05 8:37 PM There was a touch of wheels between riders in front of me... ...and that right there is why I don't do what you do.

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi All, I was away for most of the weekend as it was my sister's wedding. No triathlon stuff there - all about her. I was a bridesmaid so Saturday was spent doing hair, waiting, doing makeup, waiting, getting dressed, waiting, ceremony, waiting, photos, waiting .... hahahaha - i sound like I didn't enjoy myself but it was a really nice day and it was great to be there for her and see all kinds of family. As for training, well, it continues. Open water swim planned for today and chores. Since today is a glorious holiday. I started my packing list as we plan to leave next Sunday. Anything you recommend that isn't on the normal packing list? I'll have to catch up now ... |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Had the craziest travel day I've ever had yesterday: delayed in Des Moines, got some extra running in as I sprinted across O'Hare to miss my flight by about 3 min, was rerouted to San Fran and then sprinted across SFO. That flight was delayed by 2 hrs but they still managed to leave my bag in San Fran? I had checked my bag because I went shopping ad ended up with an extra bag...haha. Luckily when I packed my second carry on I put all the "light" stuff in...so I have all my workout clothes, runners, swimsuit, goggles and cap and about 18 pairs of running socks! Haha. Traveling prepared to get workouts done apparently! Going to ride out to a lake near Victoria with a friend today. |
