I need to share a small victory. On Jan 1 I ran four miles for the first time ever. I kept a steady pace for the first three miles and then gave it all that I had for the fourth. Here were my splits:

Mile 110:53
Mile 210:50
Mile 311:17
Mile 410:24

I've been sick the last few days so I haven't been able to workout at all. This morning I decided to try for more distance so I promised to settle on the pace that I thought I could sustain. I made it for six miles!

Mile 111:01
Mile 211:54
Mile 311:52
Mile 411:56
Mile 512:02
Mile 611:35

Now, I almost didn't post this because I know there's a large percentage of this group that's done at least one IM. I was thinking that your inner monologue would sound something like "I ran a full marathon after riding a bike for 112 miles. Your quarter marathon isn't that cool." But then I realized that this group's purpose is to encourage, motivate and instruct beginners so I'm sharing this victory with you.

I'm seriously considering altering my goals to participate in a HM in late March.

Caleb

Why is this a small victory?  I think it's awesome!  And you're right some of us have done and IM, but who cares?  We love it when anyone progresses and shares their milestones.  Keep up the good work and the enthusiasm.  It will take you wherever you want to go!

PS.  Adding on to Kyla's point.  I remember when I ran with some walking my first 10m.  I ddin't sign up for a race, but I ate two croissants at a lunch meeting because I thought I had burned so many calories!

Why is this a small victory?  I think it's awesome!

I view it as small because I have larger victories that I'm training for like my first sprint tri (the motivation to change my lifestyle), 50 lb weight loss, first HM/HIM.

Thanks for the kind words!

Caleb,
Congrats! Don't consider this a small victory whatsoever. As one who is in a similar boat, I measure every second I gain on a mile or every minute less that I run a 5k race as a victory. Perhaps that's stupid, but little goals, attaintable ones, are the ones that will ultimately get you to what/where you seek as your end result. Then, the fun is to set more goals!
So keep it up! :-)

Caleb:

Everyone who has ever run a marathon had to start running with some shorter distance. DO not talk-down your achievements! I would love to run four straight miles! You did great. Working your way up to the distance and building endurance slowly is the way to go.

Awesome job!

It's great to have those big goals out there, but I find that the smaller goals are what get me out the door every day. Congratulations, and thanks for sharing your victory with us!

It's going to be an ugly week with lots of trash talk.  A really nice, local, bay area boy is coming home with a yukky team - the Packers or some odd such group, to play the NINERS next weekend.  This could be a splintered MG for a while.  Bring it, Suzy!!!!

btw, tell Fabio to cut his hair!!!!

Clay will not cut his hair.  He had it shorter and played like crap.  He is the gentle giant of the team and I LOVE him.  Of course, I love Aaron more. He's no longer your local boy though, he's a true cheesehead.   I won't be trash talking the game.   That got me absolutely nowhere in the Rose Bowl.

Caleb-It may be hard to believe but when I read that it made me want to go out and run ! Which means it has motivated me, which is what this MG is all about and cheering each other on. I will be doing my first HIM this year and was excited when I finished my first 4 mile run. So bottom line they are all great victories , thanks fo sharing it.

While at work I have been reading Brad Kearns book.  Pretty good taking a few of the training philosphies and putting them into practice.  What is your favorite book/CD/DVD?

While training in the garage on my Bike Trainer (1.5 hrs) I used my son's Kindle with Prime Account and got a movie to watch while I rode. This was totally cool. Instant access and very small device. I used to use his Portable DVD player, but this is better. I watched Defiance. I was thinking about hanging a TV,but now I may get myself a Kindle.

Caleb,

I have a couple thoughts about your post.  1) That is so awesome and I love your enthusiasm and Bruce is right, I'm motivated too.  2) I've been sitting around doing nothing for a week, and even after finishing my 2nd ultra last weekend, 6 miles sounds like a long way to run.  3) ok, it's more than a couple thoughts, I guess it's a few..............even if you have bigger goals out there, don't forget to celebrate EVERY MOMENT YOU CAN along the way.  Each and every day you set a goal, even if it's getting your workout done or watching your nutrition, is something to celebrate.

Congrats to everyone who is making positive progress.  My knees have decided to inflict a period of rest on me -- happens every now and then when I get the right combination of too much bike and too much run (and perhaps my attempts at swim kicking are a factor too).   Goals in a few days after I stop moping.

Anyway, here's something for Darin and anyone else struggling with plantar fasciitis.  Lots of reading, but Leigh does a great job explaining the details.  She is a triathlete and PT.  The site has lots of good info for all the body parts if you are interested.

nothing small about that victory my friend!  Great job!  Keep up the good work!  I will say from experience to not get too aggressive upping your mileage just to achieve some artificial milestone.  Not trying to be Debbie Downer, but the last thing you want is to hurt yourself and put yourself off longer term goals.  Most importantly - keep having a good time with it!

Thanks for the information.  I am doing all I can to keep it quiet.  I have a podiatry appointment tomorrow to get a PT referral.

Started using a small ball and it seems to be helping, although it hurts like the dickens while I am doing it.
