I ran exactly... zero miles this week.  Got the flu.  Combined with the foot stuff earlier last month, i'm pretty far behind.  No matter, it's now a quest to see how close I can get to the bunny (and all of you too!) even if I don't catch him (this year).  Hoping to get back to activity this weekend, then it'll be time to start the ramp up.  again... Sealed

Was lethargic most of the day, came home and laid down, but kept thinking - I have to get out and run ahead of the forecast - 7-11 inches of snow tomorrow and didn't want to have to slog through that Saturday or Sunday, now if I "choose to" that might be alright.

Didn't want the persistent bunny to keep logging the miles on me without getting anything in ( I am swearing off treadmills for the immediate future).  So wouldn't you know, I take off at twilight and he has all his friends scurrying and rustling through the trees and bushes along the bike path tormenting me, reminding me that the bunny is still there, just going and going and going.

Well bunny, from Wed through Sun I got in 15.1 miles even if I don't go out in the snow - in those 5 days you will only get 13.75 - take that you rascally rabbit.

Scott, you passed me but then I slid back past you today - that is if you are up-to-date.  K passed me and while it looks like I passed him back, I know that he hasn't logged his mileage for this morn so he is ahead of me.  Scott and K, go on and pass me and I'll tuck in behind and enjoy the scenery.  ;-)

Yeah it seems like I have been pacing off your husband for the last couple of weeks.  Go ahead and "draft" on the run and keep coming along!

I tried something new yesterday.

I ran a 10K, for training.  That's nothing new.  The new part is that I sat out with the goal of averaging 11 min/mile.  I figured at that pace, I could make the entire 10K without walking at all.  Well...

I did it!

This, in my mind, lends credence to the discussion on Zone 2 training.  I think I'll ride this Zone 2 train for a good while, and I'll even adopt the 10% rule, as well.  I'm curious, though, how long, do you think, until I start seeing my average speed increasing?  I've a goal of a sub-30 5K, off the bike, by June 2nd and a sub-60 10K, off the bike, by June 23.  Both of those are dates of triathlons I plan to do and would like to do fairly well on.
Realize, though... I'm in no rush... staying injury free and being able to train without laying off a lot is for more important to me than getting faster!

Yay, Speed!!!!!  That's what happens with the ez run!  Keep it up.  I can't tell you how long it will take to reach your goals but I would suggest the following.  Stay ez for 2 to 3 weeks.  Then one day, maybe for a shorter run, go ez for 2 miles, increase speed by about 30 secs (10:30) for another mile or half mile, and then go down to an ez mile or two for cool down.  Do that for a couple of weeks.  Then go from there.  I do not believe in adding more than one "quality run" (longer or harder) into your running program for several weeks.  And if you are running 5 or 5+ days a week, no more than 3 "quality runs" per week but it takes months to get there.  That's my thoughts so I'd love for others to add their two cents.  Congrats!

Awesome! I'm a big fan of zone 2 training and not pushing things on a schedule. I had good results going to all zone 2 after an injury and listening to my body. On runs where I felt good and had a decent time on the first half, I would turn them into temple runs and negative split them. PR'd my last half marathon by 5 minutes with this method. Be patient, build the mileage, build the engine and you'll be amazed how much more fun and relaxing running will become.

Engine building in progress.

Sunday found me on another Z2 run.  I originally intended to do 10 miles, but some *cough* gastrointestinal issues forced me to cut that short to 8.43 miles.  Oh well.
I think that I'll organize my training plan such that I'll use this 8.43miles as my baseline.  I'll add 10% per week.  Most of my runs will likely be 10Ks; "long runs" will be the baseline+ distance.
I'll also continue with my 2 days on, 1 day off plan.  I have duty (24 hour work shift) every 3rd day, so this works well for me.
Ultimately, I'm going to shoot for being able to complete a HM in ~2:15:00.  I figure if I can do this, I can do pretty damned well in a 10K or a 5K.  I still have my sub-60 and sub-30 goals for those... with 12 weeks to my next triathlon!

That said, this Saturday has to be my long day as I have duty on Sunday.  I'll lay down 9.25 miles.

Another bad day yesterday.

I've never pointed it out, but I am a nuclear reactor operator for the USNavy.  I'm currently finishing out my career on a submarine undergoing an extensive overhaul.  I'm nearly more avid about riding my motorcycle as I am about triathlon.  So much so, in fact, that I have NOT ridden my motorcycle to work on a total of 14 days since November of 2010.  Each of those days was due to ice, snow, or my motorcycle being broken.
On Monday, a fellow biker and shipmate lsot his life in a collision with another shipmate's pick up truck.  It's saddening, and no one is quite sure what went down.  All I know is that I didn't really feel like training yesterday.
Along with not having my heart in it, Mother Nature wasn't being so kind with the precipitation levels.  She was also delivering a lot of dense fog.

Needless to say, I did nothing yesterday.  Today is a new day, though.  We'll see where it takes me.

As someone pointed out elsewhere  - it is PI day.  so everyone needs to out do the bunny today running 3.14 miles in circles, then top it off with whipped cream or ice creamCool

I didn't do 3.14 mile in a circle - only watched my son's 3rd baseball game in the last 3 days.  But I topped it off with neither whipped cream or ice cream but instead --- wine.  Guess that is why I've been passed by hubby and Scott this week and pretty soon that bleeping rabbit is gonna pass me.

Speed, I'm so sorry about your loss.

Speed, I'm so sorry about your loss.

Thanks.  Seeing another biker go down is never good.  Alas, one must move on.  It's easier when you don't really know the person who was lost; I didn't know him so well, so I'm more capable of getting on with life.

That said, I did this on Wednesday.  Changed up the course I normally run for my 10Ks and did some extra stuff.  Even with doing 20 burpees, 20 jumping jacks, and 20 lunges per leg, I still managed a 1:07:32 10K.  I'm thinking an attempt at a PR is coming 1 week from Sunday!!

Can Speed break 1hr on a 10K?!?  Stay tuned to find out!!!

Hey all,

Is it too late to join?  I did 1000 2011, and had my best running season.  Was down a bit (and less consistent) last year and my run followed.  Anyway, just had a bit of a wake up call in a race this morning, so time to get cranking.  20 miles / week, right?  Should be able to do that... but I haven't :-)

Okay, its only the middle of March so why not try to join a year long challenge now, right? Undecided

This is right up my alley and exactly what I need. So if I may I would love to play. Behind the 8 ball now but I can make up some ground over the next few months to get back on pace.

Had a Scout function to go to for my eldest, so I knew I wouldn't get anything done after work today.  I used part of my 2 hour lunch period to get in some dreadmill time.  I went for 35 minutes, and polished off 3.37 miles.  No record pace, but I never wnet below 5.5mph at 0 incline.  Tomorrow, I'll try to do a constant 5.7mph at a .1 incline, for at least 5K.

Hi everyone!  I have been following along with the thread as I have been rehabbing my Achilles.  I have started running, although with a run/walk interval.  As of yesterday, the run interval has surpassed the walk interval, so I would like to rejoin the challenge.  I have adjusted my goal miles on the spreadsheet to reflect my new start date.  Looking forward to building back up with you guys!
