Yep, training in the mountainous region of Chicago for it as well. Did the same last year in prep for CDA. The climbs are not really that bad at all. As long as you're getting your cadence up and can spin you'll be in great shape, or if you're generally good at hammering in big gears you'll be fine as well.

Longest climb I had last year was probably about 100 feet, though at a 13% grade. Repeated those sessions a few times but doubt it did a whole lot in prep for CDA.

Seems a lot of folks (myself included - last year) got pretty pre-occupied mentally with both the climbs and the swim. Just my 2 cents but as long as your sticking to your plan (which includes big gear and fast spin sessions), and have invested in a neoprene cap, swim booties, AND earplugs for swimming you've got yourself covered.

Anyhow, we also lucked out with some pretty amazing conditions on race day last year..so I certainly have not been through the "worst" swim at CDA so take my opinion with a grain of salt..or maybe a saltstick?

Brian your advice is spot on. Just work your training plan and you should be alright on CDA. Worst comes to worst you walk the hill and run the other 24 ish miles.

I'll start doing this with ya once March is in the bag. Have been pretty consistent the past few months but not much in the way of actual tracking monthly totals.

I'm flexing my off day to today (annual ice fishing trip with the fellas....on that note how strange is it to think that IM training and Ice Fishing exist in the same time spans..anyhow..I'm yet to take a sip of my first coffee this AM so that may not be that mind blowing haha). It'll be different having an entire Saturday off.

Looking forward to recapping March with ya.

I'm way too new but didn't start tracking til mid February on a log so only have less than half your total time. One thing I can't do is track distance on my bike as I am on a trainer. Michigan weather has barely let get outside for a few runs let alone bike.

Swim 5 hours
Bike 10 hours
Run 9 hours

This is my first IM and trying to figure this out with work, family, and life keeping throwing wrenches into it.

Sure, I'll play....

February's totals:

Swim: 11h 35m 39s - 31700 m
Bike: 33h 12m 44s - 903.51 km
Run: 19h 47m 23s - 206.92 km
Weight Loss 4.4lbs (another 15 lbs to go)

It's very Canadian to use imperial measurements for weight and metric for distance.

Mike, just wow that would be over what I have planned for my longest peak training week, at least for the run. Do you have a race coming very soon?

My distance totals are all in kilometers, so they really aren't as big as they appear.  I am trying to maintain 50-60km/week of running right now (32-38 miles).

I had knee surgery about 18 months ago, and I've built my mileage back up very very slowly to get back to this level again.  I'm pretty sure my knee couldn't handle the standard 10% increase per week that most training plans would follow over the next 3 months.  I feel more confident just keeping the running mileage consistently higher.

Sure, I'm in. My numbers don't look normal since I've been dealing with Achilles tendonitis for the last couple of months. It meant February running was almost non-existent and biking was very limited, but swimming was good. I spent the majority of my time cross training on the elliptical. My hope is March numbers will start moving towards a more normal IM build.

Swim: 33,150 yards; 8:57
Bike: 152 iles; 9:30
Run: 19.5; 2:56
Cross train (mostly elliptical): 94.2 "miles"; 14:31
Strength: 3:10

Welcome! Why the transfer out of LT? Is it the normal cold/hills? I bet you're not the only one making that transfer this year. Hopefully, you'll enjoy both TX and CdA.

Thanks for the encouragement! The hills at Tahoe had me worried I would have a really bad day. This is my first full iron season; I decided I'd better take another year of training before I went after that bike course at IMLT... although it is two hours from the house :/ I feel much more comfortable with the 4,600ft climbing at CdA compared to 6,550ft at Tahoe. I still get a challenging course, plus I've never been to Idaho so I can't wait

Ah, makes sense. Sounds like a good plan to work up to LT. As an added bonus, you don't have nearly the elevation to deal with in Coeur d'Alene as you would with LT.

Late to the party, but that is par of the course for how February went for me. Had one good 10 day block in there, but between some travel and illness, was not a great month for me.

Swim: 6h 20m - 16500 Yd
Bike: 12h 28m 47s - 215.53 Mi
Run: 10h 25m 21s - 66.89 M

Wow, that is a lot of running. I don't think I'll get there, even in peak months.

Interesting..was just leafing through my plan thinking "wow..lots of time left'. 13 weeks till taper adds some of that urgency right back in...

Really getting excited for the race this year. Granted it's only my 2nd year of IM racing (and I use that term "racing" loosely) but the difference in my training and just "engine" overall is pretty eye opening. Already looking forward towards next year and am not only counting down to IMCDA this year but also the date that volunteer ops open up for IMWI this year (signing up for 2015).

Awesome Feb totals everyone!

13 weeks left, perfect time for 56 degrees and sun which just so happens to fall on a 100 mile bike ride. Any other foul weather people getting a weather break this weekend?
