MarkH, I'm considering coming to NC for B2B. Deciding between the half and full right now. How fast does that race fill up?

Mitch--thanks! I'd thought it was 30 per discipline. Good to know for July. Today: 30ish minutes on the bike in Estes Park.

BTW, If some of you heard about the unprecedented flooding Colorado had last fall, you may be as surprised as I was to learn that it even affected Estes itself. Estes had been cut off by the flooding because all three of the major routes that lead from the east to the town were washed out in parts (as were parts of a fourth canyon). But some roads in Estes were also hit, partly from water cascading down steep valleys. There was a 20-foot section of road still missing the asphalt on my ride. Who knew? The drive up was also interesting. The usual route we would take is under major construction (permanent repairs), so they advised a different route. The different route is one I used to take frequently when I lived further north, and today that canyon looked so different, not only because of the homes that have yet to be torn down, but because it literally changed the landscape. The flood damage is incredible, even nine months later.

Last night 38:53 OWS, nature finally cooperated and the waves were light and the water temp is up to 59F. Good weather should put it in the 60's this weekend.

Mitch- both my wife and secretary told me I have to at least do a 30 minute spin because it makes me "tolerable" (wtf) when under stress. Each telling me that independently, it feels like a conspiracy.

You are in a different universe than me with that kind of pace. Doing the metric conversion, your swim pace is 1:38/100 yd pace for a 4000m - that's just sick my friend. Wouldn't even waste the effort getting faster cause you are already there. Nice going!!!

That is sick indeed. I would have a hard time doing it with flippers on (the big ones).

I ran a half marathon on a whim today. I came in 9th out of 21. I was faster than the slow runners slower than the fast runners. It was a small local thing no nutrition on the course only water. It was on a former Air Force Base, so it was flat and in the low 80's by the end. Part of the race was on the old runway, it was HOT.

Jim--nice job on the half!

Ran a half-mary here today, but it was the opposite of Jim's: both planned and very hilly. Also kind of chilly. Improved my time by a few minutes, though the course was short so I only know with some certainty that my pace was 10 seconds per mile faster than last year. The course itself is beautiful but the first 4-1/2 miles are straight up the mountains to 9500 feet or so, then there's a steep downhill and then there's another good climb and finally everything is mostly flat or downhill 'til a slight gradual climb over the last couple of miles at the end. Placed 3rd among the 40-49 females, but unfortunately they only did four age groups so among the rather unusual "Females 36-50" age group I placed 8th. Still a good race, and without any threatening wildlife. Race instructions included advice about avoiding moose and running off into the forest if necessary. I wasn't clear whether this was general advice or if there'd been an angry moose in the area. There are plenty of moose here, but usually just giving them their space works fine. We did see a moose on the course on the first year of the race (on a downhill stretch after we'd done 4 miles of uphill--probably one of my favorite race memories ever!), but not since. Also, this is a different course, because the original town refused to reissue the race permit. Anyhow with the warm-up and race, I'm adding something like 2:06 and some seconds to the mix, plus the 30 minute shake-it-out run from Friday.
