Our Masters Swim coach is always trying to get us to use stretch cords to strengthen stroke specific muscles (no one ever does, but he tries!). He has them tied up on a high bar and we lean over at the waist to get the correct horizontal angle. Then, with the stretch cord in hand, just do your stroke. I did it once, I could feel it on my muscles. I imagine it could be a good workout if you can't get to a pool. I will be going to Egypt for about three months soon and I plan to get a set to take with me. |

Although I can't help but thing the 'tiny' track is huge compared to the one at my Y. Ours is 17 laps per mile so, what, 100yd oval? Even at 8:30 pace the turns are too sharp and I have to cross a lane or two to keep from destroying my ankles! There's not usually enough people on it to worry so much though. And if there is, the treadmills are right downstairs. |

It was essentially an elevated 4' wide walkway around a basketball court. The corners were banked. It was TERRIBLE!! I was there for a week and it was January, so I had no other choice but to run on it. |

8 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS)--OPEN Dan - welcome aboard! I am no longer the newbie... Okay, things are going well. I decided to skip my 4K run to have a ski day with the kiddies. Had a blast all day, pulling the eight year old to the next lift and I feel accomplished... So I am drinking "Bitter Waitress" from Shiloh Breweries. "Aggressively bold, earthy and intense, this beer has every right to be as bitter and dark as it wants to be. A medium full bodied ale loaded with hops and balanced with roasted malts and hints of black licorice". I am going to write beer cans in my next life. But I have to admit this beer is close to the description. Anyways, back to reality and tomorrow is another opportunity to have a run. I hope everyone keeps being motivating and motivated. Have a great weekend... Pat |

I will be going to Egypt for about three months soon and I plan to get a set to take with me. I was going to recommend the same thing. I bought a set about six months ago with the intention of using them for races where there's no in-water warmup available. Of course, they're still sitting on my counter top, untouched! But if I didn't have access to a pool, I'd actually use them. I really should bust them out and try them for a race warmup (well, try them out in practice first, and then for a race warmup....maybe that should be one of my weekly goals!). |

Veteran 1677 Houston, Texas | Subject: RE: Swim Cross Training with out pool access? I got the new bike today! No pics yet....I drove it home from the shop (a little over an hour away), and by the time I got home, it was getting dark out and I needed to knock out a run, so I did that. I'll be riding it tomorrow (later in the day, after it has time to warm up a bit....I'm a baby if I have to ride in sub-55F weather), so hoping to get some pics while I'm out. I'm very excited about it! The little bit of riding I did on the trainer and the parking lot makes me think I'm going to like it a lot. Not sure if anyone has seen the info released on Argon's "smart bike" (http://www.slowtwitch.com/Tech/Argon_s_Smart_Bike_6039.html), but my coach is the developer of the technology and I'll be doing some testing for him. So my bike came equipped with the aero testing device and I'll be trying to gather as much data for him, while preparing for my races this season! I'm very excited to be part of this super cool project! |

1007 DeLand, Florida | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS)--OPEN I'm a bit behind this week in that I've missed my Friday maintenance run and I haven't gotten the bike on the trainer - yet. That will happen tonight. I did get my first swim in since August though! Felt mostly good except I have a twinge in my left shoulder (which used to be my good shoulder- lol). Have to see how that goes. It might be a light tri season if it stays this way. It's been messed up since I fell off a skateboard in October. And the answer to the question 'what was a 42 year old doing on a kids skateboard?' Is simple - 'beer'. |

It's tough to mimic the movements in the pool on dry land, but some good exercises are push ups, pull ups (or seated pull downs), dips, and press downs (basically you push a bar down with your arms fully extended). Stability core work helps, too. |

193 , California | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS)--OPEN Did my last of the three threshold tests this morning. After a warmup I did 1000yds as hard as I thought I could hold. A 2 minute break and then a 100yd all out. I now have two baselines to go off of for judging swim improvement over time and I have my swim pace zones set. Off on an hour run now and then I can start my Saturday relaxing. -Matt |

New user 669 Madrid | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS)--OPEN Mike, glad to hear surgery went well - hope you get back to real life soon, enjoy recovery! Dan, welcome to the group! Dave, keep focussed on new year-new resolution, step by step: one month gone, what are Feb goals? Nicole, very jealous to hear that your coach develop the smart-bike technology for Argon, look forward to hear all about it (and some pics, no doubt!) Good week of training, only missed 1 run, so hope to maintain this rythm - short term goal a trail HM in February. Juan |

2126 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS)--OPEN Hi everyone! I just got back from a weekend travelling to Northern VA and DC to visit some friends and their kids. It was quite exhausting, but a lot of fun. I got back in the pool on Saturday. The practice was 2 hours but I stopped after an hour and a half. 3050 yards. My back is quite sore, but it was a really good workout. Going to practice tomorrow too. Might even compete in some meets in March, but I haven't decided about that yet. It's been a lonnnnggggg time since I swam competitively (not in a tri). Hope everyone had a great weekend! My left eye is hurting so I think I'm going to bed (at 8pm...sad haha). |

Back to work (in my home office) today and I have a couple of errands to run so hopefully driving won't be too bad. I start walking on the treadmill today - going to start with a mile @ 2.0 mph and we'll see how that goes. |

1007 DeLand, Florida | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS)--OPEN Checking in from last week's goals - I fell a bit short in that I missed a maintenance run (work) and never got the bike set up on the trainer (family time). My goals are still arbitrary in that the only workout schedule I have right now is the run for a potential HM in March that I haven't registered for yet... |

1941 , Vermont | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS)--OPEN Mike, I look forward to hearing updates as you go through recovery! Your initial reactions are positive so that's really great!! Happy for you! Nicole, I can't wait to see bike pictures! I love bike porn! Congratulations!!! Gretchen, I love reading about your drive and general consistency. Consistency is so hard to maintain year-round and it is motivating to see! So, again, I have been reading but not participating. I'll do a better job of supporting you all! My acupuncturist has encouraged me to up my consistency and if I can run 2 minutes and walk a minute pain free, then that's what I do....but be consistent with it and get out there multiple times a week, not just now and then. The first couple of weeks of school have shaken themselves out and I have signed off one of my two flight students for his fed ride (6 hour oral exam followed by a 3+ hour flight) so my schedule should lighten up and I'll be getting more workouts in. For now I'm going to focus on the Toughman Tupper Lake Tinman again at the end of June. I may do a HM in May for kicks to prep if all is feeling good. Since I'm probably opting out of IMMT this year since I'm not 100% healed yet, I will either look at the Maine 70.3 Dave Q did a couple of years ago at the end of August or King George on Labor Day weekend (that's an Oly on Saturday followed by a HIM on Sunday). The run for that is a b%*}h with lots of hills. I must have a goal or there is no consistency for me. |

Member 3143 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS)--OPEN Another masters swim this morning. They must have had the jets turned on full blast this morning, because one direction felt GREAT. The other felt like swimming in mud. There is always a little difference between the two directions, but never anything like this. Kinda turned Monday's workout into an interesting interval/strength session in the pool. |

At the pool where Nicole and I used to swim, it was outdoors, and sometimes in May we would get some wicked wind storms and there would actually be a current in the water that you could see. |
