gadgetlaw - 2009-07-13 1:01 PM Things at work have officially slowed down this week!  I feel so lost here!  Congrats to all the racers from this weekend.  I haven't got to all the race reports yet, but from reading the posts it sounds like you all have a lot to be proud of!  I had a good weekend.  I rode my bike to my niece's birthday party on Saturday.  I figured it was a good way to get in my training and still get to the party!  On Sunday, I did my workout in the morning and went golfing in the afternoon.  Golf was good - except for the 3rd hole.  A big black bear crossed the fairway!  I figured it was okay - I could outrun everybody I was golfing with!  Have a good training week!

Karen

Thats right....You don't have to outrun the bear. Just outrun the slowest person in your group!!
We get alot of wildlife up here on many of our course in the mountains as well. Its crazy when you see so many tourists trying to get 'closer to nature.'

DougRob - 2009-07-13 12:30 PM You all must be tired from the weekend. I really expected more razzing for bringing two right shoes to the race! It still is bumming me out though. Maybe it was my way of subconciously giving myself room to PR it next year.

Doug

Doug--YOU GOTTA LET IT GO!  You did great and you know you can do better when you have all the little stupid stuff taken care.  Be anal like me.  Lay your outfit and all your other crap out the night before and practice putting everything on and doing the transitions like a dozen times.  You'll soon realize you will never make that mistake doing it.  So you ask why are my transitions so slow?  Good question!

I am trying. I just am disappointed because I put a lot into it, riding the course 4 times, practicing my OWS. To be mess up something so simple. (Deep breath...exhale) Ok I am over it.

I am tentatively going to race another OWS sprint in Roxboro 8/15 on my way to see family in VA. It is only 3 mile from the NC/VA border. My family will finally get to watch one of my races. Right now the race is only 17% full and the cost is $20. I have signed up for my Olympic 10/10 at Pinehurst. I start my 12 program for that next week. I also am going to volunteer at th Duke Liver 1/2 IM on 9/27 in Chapel Hill. So as long as I focus on what is in front of me I can let go of the past.

There was a member of the USAT Board of Directors at the Triangle Tri yesterday. When I told him about my shoe mistake he told me this story:

Seems an Austrialian pro a few years ago showed up without his bike shoes. He raced the bike in his running shoes on top of speedplay pedals. Remarkably he lead off the bike. When he ran out of the transition area they all thought he was showing off by running backwards. Turns out he was trying to loosen up his leg muscles as he had been pounding his feet into the pedals the entire time. BTW: He won.

Hey, guys.  Baseball is winding down (we didn't get out of pool play because there were 3 10 year old teams in the pool).  Maybe I can get serious now.

Ran my first 5k Friday night.  Midnight start and it was miserable - 85F and 1,500% humidity.  I ran pretty good though.  The winners were two brothers from here - one is a former college runner, the other will be soon.  They both ran 15 something's.  I was aiming for a 27:00, but ran a 27:57 which I'll take considering the humidity - and the fact that I ran the 1.4 miles from my house to the start rather than driving.

Either way, I feel back on track.  Good to read all these success stories.

Steve,  The Flag image is my favorite.  Can you email me the high res?

Tracy,  I think about that all the time.  But I'm ecstatic with my improvement so it doesn't bother me... too muchWink

Janet,  I know you are faster than everyone there but if you didn't like someone there, good excuse to crack them in the ankles with your putter.  Bonus the bear malls them!

Reub:  AWESOME job on the 5k brother!  27 wasn't on my radar for my first.

Those pics are amazing and I was right there with ya until that rock climbing bit.

I don't want to make the 6 o'clock local news as the person who fell off a rockwall while jogging.

tahrens - 2009-07-13 1:09 PM Steve dear, that is not trail running, that is ROCK CLIMBING!!!!

Speaking of swimming, I realized this weekend that fast swimmers amaze me.  When it comes to running, I know what I am doing wrong and I know what fast runners do to be fast.  But with swimming, technically I am doing everything right and I watch those fast people and think, "HOW DO THEY DO THAT?"  Anyone else have that feeling?

I know exactly what you mean but I have no idea how they do that?  I feel like I'm doing the same stuff/stroke but at 2:30ish 100s obviously I am not.  LOL

And if you figure it out, please let me know.

That is the beauty of trail running... So much to see, do, and experience.... the 1st thing we saw was a coyote.  They are more scared of us than we are of them.

Warning, stupid girl question coming.  In my quest for perfect hydration, I am trying yet another bottle design.  Did I hook it on right?  It came with NO directions.

I think that looks right, hard to tell though from this angle.  One end of the bottle should be pointy the other is round.

You can also pick up a mount so it is a bit cleaner than the rubber bands, which after a few races get brittle and break.

Also, what is all that mess in the background, is your bike stored out in the garage?

Thanks Tony.  Yes, all that mess is the storage area for our hiking boots, helmets, etc and it is in the garage.  Is that a bad thing?  I think it was John that was ripping on me last time because the CT was set up on some 15 year old carpet that he thought needed to go.  Do I need a pristine location to store the Seven?

Oh one other thing.  If I leave the lid on do I need that yellow spongy looking thing in the bottle?

My understanding is the yellow spongy thing is in there if you go without the lid. Its an either or. Thats the same bottle I bought. Still have to trim the straw, as its a wee bit long for me.

haha you know you are supposed to bust on people for the bike background.  I belive a hundred or so posts back or maybe last thread you busted on my picture because it was in a messy room also ; )

Personally I keep the yellow spongy thing in even with the lid on, double protection from water or whatever splashing out and it doesn't take away too much volume being in there.

Pulled a fattyfatfat this evening!  Did the unplanned, bike still in motion, dismount this evening...  A little road rash, some sore wrists... Will skip workouts tomorrow, but will try to get back at it on Wednesday.  Bike into the shop tomorrow to fix the rims.

Two lessons - First, watch for that groove in the road, it sucks tires in!  Second, wear riding gloves when training - it would have saved me from the most painful injury on the palm of my hand...
