Karen-- The wetsuit thing takes a while, and yes sweating seems to be normal.  Try putting a plastic bag over your feet/hands while your putting it on, and if you are not using Body Glide, I recommend that or some over the counter cooking spray (although not recommended on your own wetsuit- I hear it is not too good for the neoprene).  Put this stuff on your ankles, knees, shoulders, neck and elbows.  And be patient---Yes it is a pain the butt, but it is worth it when you are gliding along the lake!

Janet-- I think you did the right thing.  We run along the wrong side of the road on purpose.  Might as well bike there for a quick second if need be... Just be aware of cyclist coming at you.

Suzy, I didn't mean to trivialize your 3 pounds in any way - you're just so tiny.

And to answer the bike question...that is, in fact, not my bike...my frames match and have two bottle cagesWink   Seriously, I ride an XL Giant.

gadgetlaw - 2009-07-14 4:14 PM The tracking is showing that my wetsuit rental is sitting on my porch!  I'm excited to try it, but bummed that I have a bike scheduled for after work.  It is, however, my last long workout before my race next weekend - so I am glad about that!!  I just want to try the wetsuit on!!  And probably laugh at myself in the process!!  Any tips for getting it on?  I'll let you know how it goes!

Karen

zipper in the back

This is the best advice I've gotten.  Thanks for making me laugh!  Laughing   I did try the suit on last night.  After about 20 minutes of struggling, I got it on far enough to zip it (yes, up the back!!).  I started sweating and pretty much gave up!  How long should it take to put it on??  I clearly did not have it up far enough.  And, since we have been talking about crotches, I had a droopy crotch and droopy arm pits!  Oh, and since you already have that little piece of info, I may as well give you more info that you don't want to hear.  When I came downstairs in the suit my husband did kind of meow at me and told me I looked like a superhero...  Anyway,  I am going to try again tonight at the park.

I have lost about 135 pounds, with maybe 10 - 15 to go.  (That is what, almost 1 1/2 Suzy's?  Wow, when I think of it that way, it sounds crazy!)  I have no idea what my BMI is.  It doesn't matter to me - I feel great - I am 41 years old and in the best shape I have ever been - and that is what matters to me.  I never considered that I was on a 'diet'.   I changed the way I ate, but it was a permanent change, not something I did for a short period of time to lose weight.  Sometimes it is hard.  Sometimes I still want to eat the entire bag of potato chips.  Undecided  But I think about how it will affect my next ride or run.  And most times, I step away from the chips.  Wink  For me the biggest changes are portion size - I ate way too much before! Keeping track of what I eat - I do not always write down what I eat.  But if I was not losing weight or gained some, then I would keep track.  It is easy to eat a couple extra hundred calories without realizing it.  And I have incredible cravings at times.  I used to say no, you can't have that!  But now I just give in.  A little bit of chocolate, or something, is better than depriving myself and totally going crazy after a while.  I am also willing to try new foods that I never ate before.  Now beans and lentils and veggies are some of my favorite foods.  (I used to say the only good bean was a jelly bean!)  Try not to get discouraged, believe me I have been there!!

And Sam, I totally understand your frustration about guys losing weight easier.  My husband has lost probably 25-30 pounds since we've been married.  How did he do it?  Heck if I know.  He doesn't exercise.  Well, he does walk the dog.  He eats candy and chips.  The only thing different is how I cook as compared to how he ate before we got married.  I know that is a big difference, but come on!!  I sweat for hours a day, and he doesn't.  It can be incredibly hard to handle!  I am actually kinda jealous that you have a husband you can work out with if you want!!  Just keep at it.  You will succeed!

Karen

You've lost a 135lbs?  WOW, that is terrific.   It sounds like you have made some healthy changes all around. Impressive.

The best way to get the wetsuit on is from the bottom up.  Make sure the back of the knees are in place and then slowly take all the wrinkles out of the rest of the legs before pulling it over your torso.  The crotch should be all the way up to your own Like I said last night you really have to work the shoulder area a lot to get it to fit properly.  The more you do it, the easier it will become.

How cool!  A friend of mine and my former bike coach just finished up sagging for her good friend, a cancer survivor and Madison native.  He finished all 136m of Badwater, the toughest road race in the World in 36:28.

So looking at results from my tri last year where I got 2nd in AG which is coming up next weekend.

There were only 13 guys in my AG, this year there are 31.

I think I need to do this to stay up there again.

LOL, he is 51 and put those numbers up.

I am pretty sure that the 23 mph and 7:30 run will be pretty tough for me to put up if not impossible, but WTH, might as well try for them.

Thanks Kim,

It's a really small transition area, or it has been the last few years I have been there.  Very easy to get in and out of, I was 1:00 in each last year also.

Only going to wear one watch that starts when I get in the pool.

Also just looking at start times, it's a pool swim and If I start around 6:30am per their numbers there are folks that won't even get into the pool until 9:30 or later, so I could be done 2 hours before they even get in the water.

Steve, nice job on the BTOM man!  I have a prediction...the next mentor group will have somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 mentees!  Before you know it, Steve will will be selling advertisement space within the SWBKRUN MG... or maybe his own site.

Thank you!!! SEE--- I am not the only one that complains about those.  AND THAT WAS A LONG TIME AGO!  I was much more sensitive back then!

I'll bet if they heard about that they would take away that BTOM.  Maybe not you're a lot tougher now. You could probably handle one in the nose and one on the nose.

Selling ads... Not a bad idea to pay for entry fees !!!

Thanks Karen and everyone else for the help, pep talk and commiserating.  I know it can be hard for everyone whether it is wanting to lose a few lbs. or 20 lbs. We are all healthy, active people so we can take pride in that.

Keep up the good work everyone!

No racing for me .  I am going to live vicariously through my twin, Kim!

Heading back to our house up north today and having some good friends join us for the weekend which is always fun.  Other than that, a couple of OW swims and a long run.  Pretty low key.

Oh and about the wetsuit.  I sweat like crazy trying to get it on and pull and tug and pull and tug.  The bag over the foot helps.  And I try to pull and get it up as high on my legs as possible and all the way up to my crotch before I even attempt the upper body.  I roll it down as I pull it up then pull from the inside so I don't rip it.  Eventually I inch my way up the leg and have it all the way up the thigh.  Then the rest just comes right up over the arms and shoulders.  I also have a sleeveless so the arms aren't a problem any more.  :-)

No race this weekend - next weekend w/ Tony.

But today is my daugther's 3rd birthday.  Wow can't believe how the time has flown by.  We are having a cookout on Sunday w/ family and friends for her.  We are also going to Silver Diner for her celebration meal tonight.  And I think she has a Cold Stone Creamery sundae in there somewhere!  So lots of celebrating.

Subject: RE: SWBKRUN Mentor Group-Closed! KEEP ASKING QUESTIONS!!!

On a totally different subject - it is another boring day on the Tour de France.  I've been live listening at work and they are still -footing around on the flats.  I'm waiting for the Alps and some kick a$s action.  Forget the team stuff, I want to see Lance, Alberto, Levi and that other Astanti dude throw down the gloves and race each other up the mountains.  I'll bet they can leave the rest of the field in the dust.

I may have to tune into the Open instead and see if Tiger's hitting the ball well.

First thing this morning I have to says THANKS.  Thanks to all of you for the power you provide.  Last night at the 2 mile mark of a 6 miler I was hurting.  Trying to decide to walk or call my wife.  But I kept thinking Andy, Tony, Trevor, etc busted their tails, they hurt themselves today - I will too.  I finished, but well short of my target time.  Anyhow, I'm pretty confident that without this group I would have been walking.  Thanks.

Now to a question...The goal pace for this 6 miles was 10:23/mile.  I couldn't do that so I finished it at about 10:40 with miles 3, 4, and 5 at 11:00/mile.  So my question is this...when doing long runs is it better to stay near the goal pace?  Or simply get the miles in regardless of pace?

And it took until this morning to figure out the problem.  For some reason my wife made dinner at 4:30, a 2 hour softball practice at 6:30, and absolutely nothing to eat in the 5 hours before running.

But today is my daugther's 3rd birthday.

While a kid's party may not be the same physical test (although sometimes it does come close) it is absolutely a much tougher mental test than most sports!
Enjoy the party.

We have NOTHING this weekend - which means I have to install a new shower door that's been sitting in the garage for about 3 weeks.Frown
