Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() tri-chic - 2010-02-26 7:36 AM Trina, do what Kayla said and talk smack back. My favorite comeback is simple. Shut up and push... Keep up the awesome job and enjoy! X2 on what you will see at your first tri if you have not competed in one yet. I was amazed as the variety of people and ages. And you know how old everyone is since it is marked on their calf. So I am riding along on the bike and these people 10+ years OLDER than me are zipping by....it was a bit depressing. But, I turned it into a motivation cause I want to be doing what they are doing when I am their age. And the only way I can do that is to keep doing what I am doing now....training, getting stronger, faster, better....and enjoying myself doing it. I see all the other responses on this already and it is a bit humbling....all of us have a list of 'strikes' against us as to trying to do tri's. But, facing them head on and not letting them take us out of the game is what makes this fun and rewarding. Mountains show up in many different forms while we train and compete. It is our choice as to whether we turn them into mole hills. Hang in there! The hardest choice you make is taking the first step to do this. You have done that! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tony--I am 99% sure my first outdoor ride of 2010 will be Lonestar! Janet--36" inseam? Yours is 10" longer than mine....lucky you. I guess since I am 4'10" we are at least proportional to one another.... Sounds like the wetsuit demo was very worthwhile. Did you buy one? Today is a big day.....off for a swimming lesson and lunch with the coach and then the unveiling of my newly built GURU later this afternoon. My fitter is totally jazzed with what he built. He is a little like an artist when it comes to bikes so it will be interesting to see how he dressed it up. Can't wait..... dalessit - 2010-02-26 9:17 AM TrevorC - 2010-02-25 7:59 PM Rob you may be jealous....... I just ran outside in shorts for the 1st time this year!!! WHOOT WHOOT....almost 50F at 4:30pm today. Not Texas weather, but I'll take it for February. Which now means it will snow 3 ft next week. LOL, I am jealous. We have had the worst winter I can remember. Not snowing today but 40mph wind makes it tough to train outside.... I have only had one or two outdoor rides while training for Lonestar at this point... Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tobey91 - 2010-02-26 8:38 AM Spent the past few days in SF, and got some good runs in - including some hill repeats up California Street. Boy, were those difficult -- my heart rate was holding at 180. But the run along the waterfront was great too, and I hopped into a group that was keeping 8:10 or so -- which is a great pace. In fact, it is a pace that I would say is usually above my comfort zone, but I was able to hold with them for 4 miles. Did not realize how fast we were going until looked at my Garmin later. Probably a good thing because I would have told myself that I could not hold that. Unfortunately, limited training opportunities this weekend. My wife in Texas is taking care of her mother who is very sick, so I have all three kids (aged 5, 4 and 2) solo this weekend. I may get some unintended aerobic activity in while running after them, but nothing organized. I am very supportive of my wife taking care of her mother who is absolutely wonderful (and much easier to deal with than my wife's mother-in-law), but I am getting concerned about base building for the FL HIM in May. Trina: As everyone on this MG has said, those are absolutely normal questions/reactions to have. Anyone who denies having them is lying. Mine come more often during really long workouts when that little voice in my head is telling me that taking a break or quitting would be easier. I have found that focusing on setting and achieving small goals such as single workouts--or even micro-goals such as keeping up my pace until that big tree up there--helps because once I have achieved that small or micro goal, I am pleased and it gives me strength to move on to the next small or micro goal. And before you know it, you have become so successful at those small and micro goals that you can tackle the larger goals of the swim, the bike or the run, or even all three put together. -William I like how you said that. I had to think about what you meant there. ![]() |

It is our choice as to whether we turn them into mole hills. Hang in there! The hardest choice you make is taking the first step to do this. You have done that! Funny story about people's ages. My very first 60mile bike race was not a good experience for me. 1/3 of the way into it I was passed by a little old lady, must have been in her late 70's, all aero and smooth as silk. She told me I was doing great and to keep it up, then she dusted me. Later that day I drafted off a 14 year old! It was her first 60miler as well and needless to say she was much stronger than I was. I let her pull me in. Moral of the story - we've all been there on those bad days, but as long as we keep going back then we're all winners! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ![]() Anyway, back to the race, I was motoring along on the bike leg and enjoying passing people younger than me and thinking they have to look at that 48 on my calf as I pass them. In the last mile, this guy passes me and he is not only maintaining a super-areo tuck, but his pedal stroke is as smooth as silk! I mean like butter! Then I look at HIS calf and he is 59! ![]() It is kind of like when you are out for a run and you either pass someone or get passed. There is no way to know how far they have come, how far they have to go, what type of workout they are doing, what they are training for, etc... Therefore the only thing that makes sense is do what is right for you. Oh, and by the way that was the race I met Tracy at and learned that her husband Doug and I played hockey together. ![]() |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for all the input and support, guys... I was thinking that the evil voice was probably something everyone has experienced. Interesting that this decided to surface right about the time I feel like I'm finally getting to the point physically/endurance-wise where I can race in a sprint. In fact, my first sprint is in a week. Evil voice. I typically tell evil voice to go eff itself, but I've been a little emotional lately so it got the best of me yesterday. I'm really looking forward to getting off the computer and getting into the pool today! I actually LOVE swimming. Whooda thunk it?! P.S. - LOL! @ tahrens - "Will I look like a fool out there racing?" I just don't like parts being frostbitten. Went out for a run last might and had to cut it short. the wind chill was so bad we couldn't run even a few blocks against the wind without everything freezing up. That and the there was an especially good.. great .. totally awesome hockey game on. Great temp for running at though. I'm looking forwward to it. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() kickitinok - 2010-02-25 10:34 PM I looked at myself in the mirror today and thought "Who in the hell do you think you're kidding? You aren't made to race in triathlons. Give it up." This just came out of nowhere. I really am enjoying the heck out of myself with the training and excited to be planning a few sprints. What's up with this??? Anyone else ever had this thought pop-into their head?? Is the voice right? Am I delusional to think I can do this given that I'm so tall and so....large? Am I going to look like a fool while I'm racing? I was always such a formidable opponent in softball and volleyball due to my size....I just kind of feel like all this is uncharted territory all of the sudden. First we all have some doubts a t times. Just suck it up and knock that lil old devil off you shoulder. Second most of us have had the thought that we look like fools before we get into the races. I'll let you in on a little secret. All those poeple standing and watching/cheering us on are so impressed with triathletes that they don't have time for "foolish" thoughts. You are doing fantastic and you'll do awesome. Keep going. Remember you had talked a little while ago about having your hubby bring all that "heavy" food into the house. How about the great example you have been setting and him getting out to support you and actually join you on your run. Now that's a healthy lifestyle. It doesn't matter what those other people think. The ones who care ( us) and your family know you are great. |

Doug, Hey I resemble that remark!! When did you see me race? Maybe one of these years my "tri" training will overcome the 35+ years of hockey training and even out my leg muscles so I can run without looking like I am skating or having my hips start locking up after 10 to 15 miles. My PT keeps telling me...Good Luck. Maybe we could carry a stick on the run, then we could either clear the path or stop the people from passing with a well disguised hook or trip. Just watch out for that guy with the Orange bands around his arms, 2:00 minutes in the sin bin would really hurt the overall time. Dino Nice thought but after over 50 years of hockey I can say with complete confidence Your PT is rigthh good luck but it is nice to have a fantasy. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Not planning to buy a wetsuit just yet, I want to try out a couple of others first and also try an OWS in one before I decide. The store rents suits and also sells used ones, so I'll probably go there if I do decide to buy one. The cost is also a bit of a deterrant at the moment although the rep last night made a good point. He asked how many pairs of running shoes people go through in a year and compare that total to the price of a wetsuit that you'll be able to use for years to come. And even if you decided to give up tri's, you could still sell the suit and get some of the money back. Put that way, it doesn't seem so bad. It's just the initial large cash outlay that gets to some people. I think we're finally going to have a nice weekend here. It'll be cloudy but at least the temps are working their way back up towards where they're supposed to be at this time of year. Hopefully I can get out for both a ride and a run. Have a great weekend! Janet |

If you aren't planning on doing lots of OWSing that allow suits then rent one. I think Rob is still renting and he is in his 3rd year of racing I think. |
