Shouldn't be any problem swimming later in the day.  Parking may be more of a challenge, but you'll find a spot somewhere nearby.

For those of you who have done this race before, what of set wheels do you recommend?  is it too windy for rear disc?  Thank you and looking so forward to  this race!

I've been passed by riders with disc wheels on this course.  They seemed to be doing just fine with them.  I think there are a few spots where you might have to contend with a strong breeze coming from the side, but that could vary quite a bit depending on the conditions.

I always run 808s (tubular) with a cover on the rear for this race (this will be IM Cali 70.3 #3 for me) and would definitely recommend it, if you have access (to a rear disc).  Of course, this is based on the premise that you've used deep aero wheels before and can control them should there be a crosswind (which is almost guaranteed on the backside of this course).  I might also add that the control issues almost ALWAYS come from a too-deep a front wheel/rider not strong enough to control vs. the depth of the rear wheel.  I've ridden a rear disc in borderline hurricane/gail conditions and the rear is never the problem - it is always the front that will be a factor in the winds.

Good luck to everyone....

-John

Kind of jumping in late here, but got my stuff packed, and heading down on Thursday morning.

Bring on the rain/drizzle, that's when I perform best. well, after my bike off course.

Good luck all, I'm lucky enough to be in a brand new age group. Wave #4, should be some descent waters for me to catch the lady pro's. hum!!!

I've always used a 808 + disc and I'm a fleaweight (about 135).  So as others have said, it all depends on your ability to handle the wheelset, esp. the front end.

Good luck everyone!  Last year it was a blast!  Hope the wind gods are on your side like they were last year.  We got pushed uphill for the last 5 miles, it was awesome!

I'm taking the wife and kids to Joe's Crab Shack at the harbor (their request).

I'll get something safe to eat like pasta or a chicken sandwich.

Anyone know the actual address for packet pickup?  The guide just says Oceanside Beach Community Center, no address.

UPDATE: Friday First Light La Jolla Cove Swim

I just realized that the group is meeting at 6:30 and swimming at 6:45ish tomorrow morning.

If you're coming from the north on the 5, there's no exit to take the 52 west (La Jolla Pkwy).

So...if you're coming from the north, exit La Jolla Village Dr. and make a right.  Go west past the entrance to UCSD to Torrey Pines Rd.  Make a left at Torrey Pines which will then merge with La Jolla Pkwy at the bottom of the hill.  Bear right to stay on Torrey Pines Rd. Continue past La Jolla Shores Dr. and go up the hill.  Make a right at Prospect and take the "slight" right down Coast Blvd (you'll see special event signs for the car show on Sunday).  Continue down the hill and park either before you come to the stop sign at the Cove or up alongside the park.

Hope to see you in the morning!

-Mike

Take I 5 to the Mission exit. Head West on Mission toward the beach. After you cross the train tracks start looking for parking in one of the lots (3 dollars for the day in the lots). Once you park walk toward the beach. Walk down the stairs to the beach/Strand level. The community center is just north of the pier. There are several Ironman signs that should point you in the right direction.

I picked up my packet today right after it opened. The line was getting longer but the inside was really empty. Maybe they'll be quicker by tomorrow, but they were all a bit slow today. Wear sunscreen and/or a hat because if you're outside waiting you'll be in the sun and it was getting hot. Be patient. The guys (some gals) inside are all vols from Camp Pendleton. They're nice but just might be a bit slow with the paperwork stuff. Good luck!

For the cheapies, park in the lots before the train tracks, it's free for 4 hours

What a beautiful day in Oceanside! I wanted to jump in the Ocean. Picked up my race items and checked out the expo.

Best of all... the $10 clearance rack at the IM store. I stocked up on a bunch of IM polo shirts- SCORE!!!
