I figured 7 miles to go he would crawl rather than quit.OK, a bit of lousy news. Kenny's gonna DNF. He's at mile 19 waiting for medical - feet cramping so badly that he can't continue. Nothing terribly alarming, an IV or 20 should do it, but that's the story. Wish I had better news...dammit. Way to persevere, Kenny.
I passed Kenny a few times and he was doing ok...but looked like he was hurtin' the last time I saw him. He finished 134.4 miles today and that's pretty darn impressive!

I mean if you were last in the water you will have a time that is :50 slower in your picture. I photoshopped mine last year to make the correct time appear. Great Job out there everyone! I love reading these threads at the end of an IM day. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() For those of you that DNF'd today, I'm sorry that you guys didn't get to finish, especially all that are not previous Ironman finishers. I didn't make it through the bike this year at IMLP, after finishing the year before. So I know both the joy of finishing and the pain of not being able to finish. It just wasn't your day today but there will be other days that it will all come together, and this experience will only help. But a DNF still sucks. ![]() |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sorry, done doing updates...who's still out? And talked to stocks at length. It was tough. River water doesn't taste good, mighta been at the root of the GI situation...but who knows. But lemme tellya, that guy is a stud. I'm sure he's disappointed with the finish, but he's savvy enough to know that not every IM situation will become a PR, and that today was a situation to be managed, not exploited. And he ran a few folks in after his less-than-expected 1:11:xx finish. That's just very goodstuff...get on his bandwagon. He's got Beach to Battleship (B2B) in a few weeks, we'll queue up some solid thoughts around this one. |

Congrats to all the finishers, survivors, and first timers. Awesome stuff, not easy to do on a lousy day, weather-wise. Here ya go. And go ahead and kick up the rooting for the last couple BT'ers on course.

Just an FYI. They had my chip mixed up with somebody else. I finished in 16:01. Had big problems with the heat on the run, but I finished. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey everyone... I am back at my room now. Thanks for the support! Yes, DNF'ing does suck.. especially 6 miles out from being an IRONMAN. But... you know what...I can / will do it another day. At this distance, crap happens. And that crap usually starts a chain reaction of "other crap"....Again, it sucks..but like it has been said before, if it were easy, everyone would do it. Even though I am not walking away as an IRONMAN...I can honestly tell you as I sit here...I am not as upset as I thought I would be. (this is strange territory for me.. I hate "losing"...bad). I look back at what I have done / become over the last year, and I honestly have nothing that I could complain about. I have trained with a lot of great people, that have made me better, I have dropped loads of weight, I have added years to my life...that I can spend with Tifni and my kids (ssh..and posting on BT, too)...I got to meet loads of BT'rs at this event and had people come up out of the "Blue" (nice....! you like that?) to talk to me and congratulate me...(short version of the story... Cube and I got robbed Friday... at the Biggest loser)... I got my longest bike ride ever... My longest OWS...my FIRST (read there are going to be more) time to toe the line at an IRONMAN..I got to spend several days with my "little" brother... I haven't been able to do that, since we were kids. I could go on and on.... but you get the point... I have heard it several times on this board... IRONMAN is about the journey and the race and completion is just gravy...I know that I have the IRONMAN heart and mentality, it is just going to take me toeing the line one more time to close the deal. I will post a race report at some point this week... but here is a quick run through.. Hurry up and wait for the swim....Once I entered the water, the current in the channel seemed to be stronger than on my practice swims earlier in the week....in the wide open. No big deal...suck it up and drive on... I got tired of swimming away from people...so, if they kept bumping me, I swam over them. ![]() ![]() ![]() Ok.. on the bike.. Here is where IRONSUCKFEST began. Hands down one of the slowest...ugliest rides I have had in a while. It was like 112 miles on the Celina loop for me. (locals will understand). Ok.. in training, I busted...at a screw hole.. my arm pad holder on my aerobars. Well this gave me training for today. On mile 2... yes 2.. I noticed that my left pad was loose. So, when I went to wiggle it.. it broke off.. at the screw hole..yah... the things that were coming out of my mouth were not cool at that point. So, now I can't get into aero. Nice! A big guy with a cool aero helmet....riding upright. I did put my right arm in to position but gripped the base bar with my left. This helped for a while, but screwed me later. I tried putting my left arm down, but it would slip on the cobra wing... and the busted metal bracket was poking my arm. Finally on the second loop, I said screw it and basically pressed down and stuck it to my arm..... No slidey and I could get aero! No worries.. your arm will get numb after a while... At some point, Grit_nugget passed me and said hey... after he left, he release a bee that stung me in the face.. lol.. (I know it wasn't him. but it happened right after he went off). Yes, this happened to me in training.. only it was a yellow jacket on the inside of the thigh on a bike ride. After some more cursing.. all I could do was laugh... The suck fest was at full force.. or so I thought....Somewhere in all of this, I dropped my NUUN container holding my salt tabs. So, I had to wait until my special needs bag. Also from this point forward I started having problems with my granny gear. It was jumping around making noise and skipping. This caused me to drop the chain 3 times today while shifting. I thought I had fixed this, when I changed out one of the rings on my cassette. I tested it on the HED3s....and it worked fine.. but I didn't test it like I did today. I finally was able to pick up some time on the way back in.... Off the bike.. on to the run.. my lower back was cramping and spasming from the start. This continued until mile 14..that is when I saw the finish...since they tease you on the loop by making you run like 50 yards from it...and then make you hang a right to start the second loop. I started picking up the pace which lead to throwing up and more cramping in the back... this continued for the next several miles. Cops kept asking me if I needed help and I said no. It finally got to a point where my legs kept cramping.... I would throw up which would cause my lower back to cramp.. which would throw me forward. When I tried to straighten up, it would cramp again. At this point I was only getting a little further before we started over. At mile 20 I finally told my brother I was done. I wasn't going to keep pushing until I had to be taken to the hospital. I sat down on a curb as he went to get someone. That is when my arches started cramping. Great feeling! A few minutes later..they woke me up and put me in the back of an ambulance....this was a first for me. They asked me some questions hooked me up to stuff and gave me O2 while transporting me to the medical area for IRONMAN. They wheeled me and hooked me to an IV and ran other test. I also talked to them about my bike ride and my position for 110 or so miles. They said that could have started my back cramping and the numbness in the outer two fingers of my hand. I took a nap during the IV...they looked at my lower backllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll < nice.. I just fell asleep typing this.. haha.. I guess my body is telling me something... Anyway.. once they were done with me..the foot Doc, lanced 6 or so large blisters from both my feet. Now I am back at the hotel... So... you see that is long.. just wait for the report. ![]() Thanks again for all the support... Kenny |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Kenny, I am so proud of the journey you took to get here. I can feel for how you must feel today, but you made the right decision. Even though you didn't hear your name announced today, you made the journey, you put in the training, and you made yourself into the amazing athlete that was always in there. You added years of time to your life, and you became an awesome inspiration in the process. Be proud of your efforts on race day, we all are! |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Kenny, First of all, Thanks for posting this short report when you're exhausted. Secondly, I'm sorry about the DNF, but I'm really proud of you for having the right perspective about it. As I and many others here have said, IM is about the journey and you lived that journey well. You've lost a ton of weight, balanced work and family, and inspired countless BTers in the process. To paraphrase John Bingham, the miracle is that you started this journey; most don't have the courage. And I have no doubt that you'll finish another IM soon. Yesterday just wasn't your day with the aerobars and the heat. You lived to fight another day and that's ultimately what matters. |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You are the man Kenny. Why don't you hobble up to Madison next week so you can sign up for IMMOO the next day to participate in '09? It would be an honor to race with you next year. Great perspective and great job. |
