Havin'Fun - 2009-04-20 1:21 PM Ruben,  you trained, you were at the starting line and you finished the race...most people can't lay claim to any of those three.  So keep training, more good things to come!

The credit for the race goes to ABRunner.  I just told the baseball story.

And I now know how to solve nagging foot problems.  The joint where my big toe meets my foot (I'm obviously well skilled on anatomy) had been hurting for about a week and a half.  I called my podiatrist friend on Thursday after my run and got an appt for tomorrow.  Starting Friday night, all thru my long Saturday run, and today my foot has not hurt one bit.

It's the placebo affect, sort of.

BTW, I'm trying to post as quickly as possible to catch up with Dale and Trevor.

Ah Reuben you're just trying to get your post count up!!
Actually, I think it was kim that mentioned it earlier as well as you, but I've noticed that every once in a whle I get a pain as well on the top of my right foot, right on the big main bone there. I do have the Yankz as well. Would it have something to do with that?

It was me, Trevor, but I think it's different...and I do see now that most of the swelling has gone down that it was a localized small blister from the tongue of my shoe rubbing into the part of my foot where it flexes.  It is the large tendon that runs down the front of the shin.  Anyhow, it is fine now on my right foot and still a small blister on the left foot.  Hurts to wear sneakers, fine in flip flops, thank goodness it is 85 degrees out and I have the day off!  I think what Suzy said about mechanics changing the foot strike makes sense since I didn't change the lacing and the shoes are not super old.  And this was a long run for me. But 230 miles (total mileage for shoes) might be needing a change soon.

Reuben, yankx are those speed laces that you don't have to tie.  But since peeps are so quick to post, this post will probably be old and useless by the time you read it.

Hey Kids....

Thanks for all the inspires and well wished over the last several weeks.  I cannot ask for better friends.

Today was tough.  It makes me scratch my head and wonder how you IM people do it!  Felt my execution was pretty good and I am stoked with the BQ, but I was not secret about wishing I could get a CR for my last Boston marathon. Not to happen.  Even though I trained in wind, it was a factor for me here today,(someone said gusts to 30mph, but I am not sure I buy that one). That and the last two Newton hills!  No matter, I am happy, tired and very sore .  Tomorrow I hobble home, spend a week recovering and then deciding how to approach the tri season.

Have a good night.

PS. Race report and pics will be up tomorrow night.

Suzy

Running sockless- I never wear socks while running in the Summer. I have found that some shoes work better for this than others. If the shoe has a rough texture inside I have had blisters, otherwise I never have a problem with it even on long runs.  Funny thing is I bought some Zoots, like Steve, which are made to wear sockless and did get blisters in my arches. So, it can take some experimentation. And, I agree, it is much better to find out a shoe doesn't work on a short run than on a long one.

Hey Trevor - I also have Yankz and they are also hurting my feet.  I think I'm going to have to take them out as it feels like they are bruising the top of my left foot!

Does anyone here use another type of speed laces that they would recommend?

I can't remember if they are lock or speed laces, but I use whichever don't require hardware in the lace holes. They are essentially elastic laces that you need not tie or adjust. They were like five bucks at the LRS. I did try a thinner version that I didn't like as much, but I think that was just mental on my part because they were different.

I've been using Yankz since Oct.  When I first used them they hurt the top of my foot..  One thing I've learned is that I had to fiddle with the fit.  Once I got the rt fit I love them.  Initially most people tend to make the fit too tight and once they loosen them they should be fine.  When you put them on they should feel like they feel when you tie them with regular laces..

That's great, from those of us on the sprint end of things, being able to run that far at such a consistent pace boggles the mind!  My entire races are not as long as this run!

Just a self pity post.  I went to the group swim at Aquatic Park tonight.  Freezing (54degrees) yet very calm water.  I am so bad at sighting.  I seem to always drift to the right and really think I need to learn to bilaterally breathe.  Popping my eyes up to sight seems to take lots of effort and I just got so tired that after we did the first 1000 yards or so, I just swam to shore, and didn't finish the last 500 yards.  I hope to go back in 2 weeks and do the whole thing, but dang.  I know it's not productive to feel sorry for oneself but DANG!  Does it get any easier?  I think I should practice sighting in the pool.  Any tips on the sighting?  I'm so miserable right now

Hey Buck up....you are doing great with swimming, biking and running.  I cannot give you any practical advice on sghting yet, but I suggest you start working on it in the pool.  Can you go to any clinics that work on that specific skill?  Honestly, if I let one bad day in the pool make me miserable I would be miserable 99% of the time!!!

Suzy

PS. YOU DID 1000 yards, that is GREAT!  So you skipped the 500, you will get it next time.

How are you currently sighting?

When I first started I realized that I would sink every time I would pop my head up.  Then one simple thing I figured out was to look forward under water, then pop my head up, for some reason that made a huge difference.

So what I do is between the 3rd and 4th breath I extend my left hand out just below the surface of the water,  look forward then as my hand is coming down I lift my head just for a sec to sight.  Really trying to focus on keeping my chest buoyant.

I try to make it all one smooth motion, you just have to see for a sec or so, don't need to sightsee while you are up there.

Does that make sense?

that's great you did 1000 yrds in 54f water!  i heard it's a total different feeling and that many people have panic attacks so much they can't swim 100yrds.  I'm sure your next swim will be much easier and finishing the last 500 yrds will be no problem.

also what Tony mention works great.  he suggested it to me too and I tried it and it's much more efficient compared to lifting your whole head out to sight.
