Haha...when I went up in '07 trying to decide if I wanted to sign up..went down that Keene descent I knew I wanted to do that race. I love that descent...so much fun...but in '08 it was raining so hard my eyes kept closing as a reflex from rain pelting me which I took as a sign I should brake a little to take off a bit of speed. Hoping for better weather 7/24/11. |

All this talk about bikes stresses me out. Welcome kr140.6! And congrats wstchstrTriathlete on your run! And congrats mndymond on your swim! Ok back to bikes for just a second... Thanks to everyone for your advice on the new bike. I'm getting a fit on Friday so just trying to figure out pedals/saddle/hydration etc. I'm not sure what kind of setup the bike comes with and if its a compact crank or not. I also still haven't decided on the Adamo saddle yet. But I am excited to have a professional fitting... complete with a laser show! ![]() Congrats on the bike. Enjoy it! Having a new bike is awesome! I'm in bike crisis mode. I have a couple cracks in my frame and brought it in today to see if they'd warranty it. I already had one frame swapped out with a seatstay issue this summer. If they don't I'll be totally freaked out and need to figure something out. I could try and ride it anyway but would rather not die. It seemed fine hammering intervals today on the trainer but not sure I want to ride 50mph down a hill on it. Treat your bike well ![]() I'll be on my road bike for the next month at least... Hope the warranty checks out. Is that a P2 you are riding? If I recall correctly, someone here on BT found a crack in his P2, sent it back to Cervelo and for a few extra bucks was able to upgrade to a P3 frame. Just sayin..... ![]() |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() manfarr1974 - 2010-12-07 7:58 PM Hi all! How the heck did I just find this thread? Happy to be here now. I have some reading to do to catch up I see. Anyway, I will start by just saying hello and answering the questions from the start of the thread. 1. Is this your first IM? YES! I am very excited!!! Just ask @wstchstrTriathlete (hi Jon!) 2. Have you done LP before? NO! But I volunteered at this year's race to check it out and decide whether or not I was going to sign up. It was my first time in LP, and I thought it was awesome. It is about 8 hours from here (northwestern Maine). I rode a loop of the bike course the day before the race. I have never felt the energy and excitement that I felt at the swim start of that race. I volunteered at an aid station, had a blast, and decided I was definitely in for next year. 3. What are your goals for the 2011 race? Have fun, stay healthy through training, and finish with a smile. I would be really psyched to be between 14-15hrs, but I will take anything under 17 for my first IM. 4.How/Why did you select the Lake Placid Race? It is the closest IM to where I live. 5. Do you have any specific questions that you wish addressed about LP (the race, training etc) Not right now, I am going to read through the thread first. See you all in 228 days!! ![]() Mandy Welcome, Mandy! Where the heck ya been? haha! ![]() |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Welcome Mandy!! Wstchstr triathlete I just wanted to tell you that your blog is excellent! 29 degrees here today (nyc) and my first time ever on a trainer! Takes a little mental fortitude, huh! ![]() Happy observation: this past week I am thinking to myself something feels a little strange. When I swim I feel like I'm gliding more, when I bike like I'm flying more, and when I run, less out of breath. Holy cow I think this training is actually making me stronger ![]() |

One lane is closed on race day. Traffic will be coming up the hill as you go down the hill. It is a very fast descent, and in my opinion, the best part of the course. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() didi19 - 2010-12-08 1:20 PM 3. What are your goals for the 2011 race? Enjoy my first ironman and run the marathon (after my disaster run at my first half, I realized I need to work on my running a lot Welcome to the group, didi19. We share a common goal in that regard. I do not want to come out of IMLP telling everyone what an awesome bike I had, but that I stunk it up on the run. It took me a lot of years to figure it out, but once I realized that the only true measure of how good the bike is through the quality of the subsequent run, my racing sure improved a lot. I guess that is why Lake Placid is so interesting to me - I just cannot at this time wrap my brain around how it is possible to get off the bike there and not be toast. But I am learning. |

When I swim I feel like I'm gliding more, when I bike like I'm flying more, and when I run, less out of breath. Haha I love this happy observation! Keep up the good work... I love it when you have a breakthrough like that and realize after a couple weeks of slugging through a new plan or approach that you are getting better and improving... awesome feeling and thoroughly motivating. Also, Welcome to the forum Mandy! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey all, I did LP last year as my first IM, and had a really great time. I hope your LP prep is on target and going well. I'm doing a little winter cleaning and getting rid of some stuff I don't need any more, and came across my watched once IMLP spinervals DVD. I bought it because I wasn't going to be able to get to the race venue to train, and wanted to preview the course. I know a lot of people love Coach Troy, but honestly I can't stand his DVD series, so after I watched it once I just couldn't do it any more. All that to say, it's good as new and works perfectly. Comes in original packaging, minus cellophane. $31 on Amazon today, it's your shipped for $20 if you want it. Please EMAIL me at joshua[period]kaptur[at]fincen[period]gov if you are interested. Please do not PM me as I am about to list a million things on the classifieds and do not want my PMs to crash. And lest I be accused of not using the classifieds, here is some advice. I rode a 5:28 and ran a 3:32... I did it using a compact (50/34) and 12/26 cassette. Not once did I wish I had a larger gear, and there were several times I would have used an easier gear if I had one. I was 6'2 and about 170 pounds on race day. Just adding that to the discussion about gearing I suspect has already occurred in this thread. Even if you are towards the front of the pack, there is no reason to worry about going too easy on gearing. I believe that if you have to ask, you should be riding a compact with a granny gear. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey everyone!! Well, it's taken me 2 days to read this entire thread (I'm so productive at work) and happened on this thread when I was looking for info for lodging in Lake Placid or the surrounding area. I'm not racing this year but I did register to volunteer so I can check out the course, venue, area, etc. Looking forward to reading everyone's advice, tidbits, knowledge, freak-outs, etc...LOL I've volunteered for the female transition tent in the morning and the finish chute from 6pm to midnight because I want to see the people that I'll be in 2012! The penguins, the back-of-the-packers, etc. I even talked a friend into volunteering with me and she's already freaking out at the thought of volunteering, I tried to calm her nerves telling her "We're NOT RACING...besides, just because you volunteer it's not mandating you actually sign up to race the following year...we're checking it out!" So I'm pretty excited just to cheer all of you on this year in my quest for IM-finisher in 2012! Maine Mandy - ever done the Tri-for-a-Cure in Portland? I inspired my 67 year old mother to finish her first triathlon last year and she loved it! Hopefully she'll be able to register for it again this year! |

I inspired my 67 year old mother to finish her first triathlon last year and she loved it! Hopefully she'll be able to register for it again this year! Hey there, Nope, I haven't done the Tri for a Cure....mostly because getting in is a B*tch. And it is always too close to one of my A races...This year it would work for me to do if I could stay up until midnight to register! ha SO awesome your mother did it! how inspiring, that is really cool! |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I normally don't push funny youtube video links around, but I had to for this one... It's a satire of someone talking about Ironman training with someone who has never heard of it. I thought it was HILARIOUS. Hope you enjoy! |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ryan - That video is awesome! I've seen it linked up a few times on Facebook and shared it with my friends and family because that's their general response about triathlon in general! LOL Mandy - Yeah, basically I become my mother's "Bag " and personal Sherpa for the race and staying up until midnight to register her. I was impressed with her race this year because she made it out of the swim ahead of a couple of women from her age group. I was really proud of her. This year I'm hoping to help her run more as she walked the entire distance last year so that would be a step up for her. Well, I got a hotel in Plattsburgh which is about an hour away? from LP but since I'm volunteering that's fine and the weekend should give me a chance to scope the area out and possibly book a hotel for 2012 or at least figure out where I want to stay. |

I feel stronger already, and I've only been at it for a few weeks! My main goal is a 20% FTP improvement on the bike. That would put me right around 260watts. I'm hoping that will put me in a position to comfortably go 6hrs. How much do you weigh Carl? If you google "slowtwitch lake placid watts" there are a few threads with people posting their stats. It will never be apples to apples but if you figure your position is pretty comparable and compare one of the guys to your weight it could give you a ballpark. |

Is your Mom doing it again in '11? You could probably find a hotel cheaper. I think Plattsburgh isn't easy to get to Lake Placid....mapquest it. I believe we looked into staying there in 2007 and found it was farther drive then we expected. We stayed in some hotel near the Canada border that had a casino next door but it was cheaper than LP rates. There are lots of little towns near LP you might be find something reason and a lot closer. |
