I just got back from my first swim in well over a month and man did my lower back feel it! Just a quick 1000 and I can definitely feel where I have lost core strength. On the plus side though, I found a new pool that I like and will swim at for the remainder of the winter (Clay Rd YMCA for those in Houston).

Happy training everyone!

Training wise December has sucked but was a ton of fun. Sick for a  couple of days, family sick, tons of holiday stuff. Just got back from my Vegas bender and prepping to ramp it up for January.

It's cool to see everyone getting thier training game face on. Almost feels like the starting line-up of a NASCAR race

Beautiful new ride! I have a B16 and could not be happier with it! KSH, I will agree that Dec has pretty much sucked for me too! Between me getting sick, then the rest of the family getting sick, it has not been a good training month by any means. It will all get better soon! Call me crazy but I am really getting excited about starting the real training...we will see how I feel in about 8 or 10 weeks though!

Yeah, what's been up with December?! Oh well, if we had to be down a month, the first month is the best month to do it. I keep telling myself I'll now be immune to getting sick for the next 5 months. Ha!

I was pumped about starting training... and had to stop. So I'm getting pumped up again too!

Other than my pool being closed for the last 2 weeks and through next week, December went pretty well for me. Running mileage could always be better but I averaged around 20 mpw (slowly building that base back up after leg issues). Very excited to have the "official" kick off of IM training on 1/2/12. I am doing a lot of things different this year based off of what worked and what didnt work for me last year.

1. seeking instruction for my poor swim mechanics. I fell like I have a pretty decent swim somehwhere inside me, I just need someone to tell me WTH I am doing wrong. That class starts the 2nd week of January so I am looking for good things there.

2. Really revamping my run training. I felt like I messed up last year with mileage increase and the way I was handling my runs. this year, it will be alot more easy paced runs and spreading the mileage out over 5-6 runs instead of 3-4 like last year

3. Training with power meter on the bike. I just got the power meter and am still learning what all the data means but based on the first 2 weeks I have had it, I think it is definitely going to help my preparation and race day performance ...

So, all that being said, lets get it going already! I am excited and anxious about the next 5 months!

I hope everyone has a very safe and Happy New Year!

I jumped in the pool for the first time in about 3 months. I decided to go 30 minutes straight and I felt good afterwards. Now it is time to concentrate on speed knowing I am halfway there. I am keeping my festivities to a minimum so I can start 2012 good.

Well, I've had to withdraw from the race this year. But that frowny face is very quickly turned around to a big smile as my wife and I will be welcoming William into our family between the beginning and middle of March! Family needs to be first right now.

For anyone interested in a little dress rehersal on portions of the IM course, sign-ups are open for the CB&I Sprint Tri on May 5 in The Woodlands. The race caps at 1000, and does fill up.

Power taps- I've trained Heart rate forever but am considering going to a power tap and training watts/power (i think that's the right lingo- lol)  Looking for some opinions and insight from those who already use them, best brand, cost effective, training improvment? .......etc.....

I've been using a PowerTap SL+ with a Garmin 500 head unit.  I'm sold on the idea.  I know my trainer time is definitely more effective when I can make sure I'm staying within the workout zone.  I also am already 100% confident that after my first IM bike in May that my legs will be ready for the marathon by watching the meter and not going to hard and keeping the emotions/adrenaline in check.

Like others I got back in the pool this week.  The swim is still there like it was, slow but not too bad.  I've been cycling like a freak.  Did 2 centuries this past weekend.  104 on Saturday and 101 on Monday.

Long run this week at 10 miles.  Just increasing 10% a week taking a rest every 3rd week.  I have what seems to be a little ITBS that has been creeping into my left knee at around mile 6.  I already do a run/walk ratio of 4':1'.  I think I need to walk the first couple of miles, run/walk the middle 6 then walk the last 2.  I'm stretching and foam rolling the heck out of the leg, luckily it hasn't gotten any worse.  Anybody else have any strategies for running when you know you will have to walk some of the workout?

Let's get going people.

This big first week back took a little detour last night. Was getting the kids to bed and going to go for my run when  my 5 yr old tells me his tummy hurts. I go and grab a bowl for him and when I get back his 3yr old brother starts to hurl. I then get another bowl and 10 seconds later my 5yr old is going at it. Two hands, two bowls, two sick kids = good times. Frown

So spent til 3AM up with them til both finally fell asleep for good for the night. So tonight we reset and get this going again.

I usually do a one minute walk for a 10 minute run.  I think at the level we train though it is really hard to determine best bets... I'm trying yoga I think the flexibility and core work will help through all three.

Yes you are a freak on the bike! I wish I had that kind of mileage going on!

For me, when I have done a walk/run, I usually do a 3 walk/2 run, or 3 run/2 walk. I have had clients do a 4 run/1 walk when I am getting them close to just solid running on their workouts.

Also, I have found that if I just walk the first mile or so... it's VERY HARD to start running. Where if I start with a walk/run it's just easier on me.

What you probably need to do is back off the run volume some, and do a 3:2 run/walk. Stay away from hills if you can. And when you do run, keep your pace slow. That will help too.

I am just thinking that if you are going to walk the first 2 miles and the last 2 miles of a run workout... then you probably need to reduce the overall volume, let your body heal up and then get back to your normal miles.

Now's the time to heal up so you can go into full IM training with no injuries. If we were were two months out from the race, I'd probably tell you something a bit different. We are 5 months out. Get healed up.
