So I did my first swim work out on Saturday.  I always thought I was a good swimmer and have good form for a recreational swimmer, but I have a long way to go.  The plan called for 40 min. and recommended doing 500 straight any stroke and then trying to improve on that time.

I swam the first 500 in 9:30.  Then realized I had another 30 minutes to swim.  Since this was my long swim I tried to continue with sets of 500 however, I just didn't have it in me.  In order to keep going I started using a kick board when my lats couldn't take it any more.  I would do 50 yds with a kick board and then back to freestyle.  I ended up with a total of 1750 yds with about 200 of that using the kickboard.

Does this sound reasonable until my endurance increases to the point where I will be able to do the 3-4 x 500?

I was very happy at the end of the workout, it hurt but in a good way.

I'm screwed up with days, it seems like MONDAY to me, but it isn't!  Who's racing this weekend? details!

If you're not racing, let's talk 2013 Goals.  Give us all of yours or just one! If you haven't developed the list yet, it's time to do it!

Little late answering the Wed QOTD but....  my goal this yr is a fall marathon.  That's really the carrot/prize.  My primary goal is to find balance where I can focus on fitness goals without feeling like I'm dropping the ball in another aspect of my life.  Is this even possible?

Congrats on Ragnar, Sam!

I've got my adult ski race series starting tonight.  First yr in a long time I'm not excited for it.  Hoping that will change once I'm out there.

Well if I did that for my first swim of the season I would be hurting. Nice job....easy does it....but do it

Congrats to everyone who is making positive progress.  My knees have decided to inflict a period of rest on me -- happens every now and then when I get the right combination of too much bike and too much run (and perhaps my attempts at swim kicking are a factor too).   Goals in a few days after I stop moping.

Anyway, here's something for Darin and anyone else struggling with plantar fasciitis.  Lots of reading, but Leigh does a great job explaining the details.  She is a triathlete and PT.  The site has lots of good info for all the body parts if you are interested.

Thanks, Dan. This is a great resource!

For me swimming endurance for distance greater than 500yd/m and for long set repeats came pretty quickly.  Just keep at it and you will be there in a week or two.   Key for me was to redouble my focus on form when I started to get tired.  When I got to the point that form was sloppy in the longer sets, I just shortened the distance as I figured that yards just for yards sake was counter productive.  As I am starting back in the pool, my workouts are only 1000ish yards for a bit.  In a month, I will be back at swimming a mile as a distance swim and 4x300 main sets....

When I'm coming back from a long layoff, I stick to repeats of shorter distances so I can maintain better form throughout the workout. If it's been a really long layoff, I'll also break a bigger set into smaller chunks and throw in some kicking or easy recovery swimming between sets. So I'd have broken that 500 into 5x100s on an interval that gave me about 10-15 seconds rest between repeats, and then I'd have done 100-200 kicking to give my arms some time to recovery before doing another set of 5x100s. In general, I think it's better to do sets of repeated shorter distances (50s to 200s) rather than long continuous swims. You can vary the intensity and rest (e.g., hard effort with longer recovery, moderate effort with shorter recovery) to emphasize speed vs. endurance.

I hope everyone had a great weekend. I am still fighting off a cold that I have had since my knee surgery. I did manage to spin lightly late last week and swim 1200m on Sunday.

Not a bad thing after not working out for 2 months straight.

Follow appointment with the Surgeon today to review the work that was done to my knee during the operation. This is my first time seeing him since before they knocked me out. So I am still not 100% sure what all was done to my knee.

Look forward to getting back in the groove for 2013 after missing almost all of 2012.

7 miles easy-paced this morning, with about 1/2 mile or so at tempo pace during mile 5 or 6 just to mix things up a bit.  Most of the time in HR zones 1 and 2, with the faster parts in zone 4.

It's been rather warm and muggy down here the past several days - they mentioned it a few times during the game last night.  We might even hit some records the next day or two - so it felt a bit like summer out there.  But no problem.  I could be running where most of you are - in snow and cold.

One of the things I struggle with since starting this Tri training a year or so ago, is the much reduced running mileage I'm putting in.  I'm one of those (stupid) people who like to run 2,000 miles or so per year.  Last year I only had 1,000 miles.  Now obviously, to get the bike and swim time in, the running had to go down.  But it's hard for me to not want to run all the time to keep my (hard earned) running base and stamina.

Please tell me that biking and swimming will not cause me to lose running fitness.  Tough for me to get it.

Bill

I've definitely been there.  I used to run 70m+/week as a straight marathoner and was very reluctant to give it up.  Now I am lucky to run 25m/week and that's ok with me.  Like we talked about last week, it isn't strictly volume, it's quality too.  The good news is the base you built up will serve you well as you focus on other disciplines.  I am faster now than when I was a straight runner (and I am a good 5 years older) on far less volume.

You will not lose your running fitness, and you will become better for it.  Like Suzy said.  Run with Quality.  Not Quantity.  They call triathlon "Multisport" for a reason.  Enjoy it.  Your body may actually appreciate a break from running a bit.  I logged over 1200 miles last year running and this year I plan on getting that down, and focusing on the bike a bit more. I have no fears of losing any run fitness--- As long as I make those runs count!!!

No way around the fact that you are going to lose some running fitness, but you are training to be a "triathlete" now, not just a runner.

And how in the He11 did the Duck's keep Kelley as their coach?  Big $$$$???

I think what Dineen is trying to say is "if you stop running altogether and only sit on your bike for a solid season winning awards left and right you will lose run fitness".  Isn't that right Dino?

I'll let you tomorrow about losing your bike fitness. I've been on my road/tri-bikes a whopping three times since the end of August. Yes I've commuted, but Mtn. bike doesnt count.

Tonight I'm starting back up again with our team bike class. I have a pretty good feeling it's going to suck royally.

U of O is a pretty nice gig if you ask me.  Talent Galour and very nice facilities.  It doens't hurt that Nike and Big Bro Phil are right next door. I don't think Kelly is quite ready to make that kind of a step.  Money helps as well, but I haven't heard anything that he was offered additional $$$.

Worked well enough for me that I plan on following the same plan again this year.  Running will stop during Road Racing and Crit season and then will resume with only high intensity stuff in preparation of Cross season.  Maybe its just me, but I have always felt that my biking helped my running a heck of a lot more than my running helped my biking ........

Posting from my phone. Will see how this goes. I just wanted to stop in and say hi. Been busy as my kids are back in school. I thought of you all and everyone's recent accomplishments this am. I went for a bike ride when it was about 32ยบ this morning. Was NOT wanting to go but I got it done thinking about you all. Thanks for coming with and keeping me warm. :-)

About losing run fitness when reducing running but adding in bike and swim, I don't think it would be lessened. I use to run exclusively. Never could get in any serious mileage as I hurt myself so often. Now with tri training I am exercising more than ever but running less than I used to. I am as fast as I used be. Maybe even faster. I need to go run a race to see. I had trouble with running less when I first started tri training but quickly decided it was probably best for me with my injury history. Anyway, with all that being said I eventually decided to up my running mileage as I love it so much. By the end of Feb I hope to be running 20 miles per week which will be a record for me. Ok, I am rambling now. Lol

Great job riding in 32F, Margo!!!!  I am a bit of a wuss when it comes to cold weather, ask Steve (Birdy) always giving me a hard time about my use of the letters BRR!  I will usually opt for the trainer until it hits 55F.

But I ran this morning in 44F with the pooch along the bay and I was nice and toasty in my long sleeved woolie.

I agree about the run fitness maintained with biking, but sadly for me, the biking is not maintained without biking!  darn bike!  and don't get me started about swimming!  oy.  i may have to start being a triathlete again.

Have a great week, everyone!

Here is the situation: I have about 400-500 to spend. I am debating on a garmin910xt or getting a wetsuit. I dont have enough to get them both obviously so trying to get some advice. Using the BT code a can get an xterra for 170. Any thoughts would be great.

What's your height and weight?
