Member 85 Chicago | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread not a chance, wonderful weather today but no time to modify the plan due to schedule. 4 hour ride tomorrow, which will start very early..right around the time our next round of snow is projected to start. Guess I'm somewhat lucky that I dont hate the trainer nearly as much as most do |

Extreme Veteran 487 Spokane, WA | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Originally posted by citaltfort Originally posted by soretaint Caught a little break and they called me in yesterday for the MRI results due to someone else cancelling their appt...... Results showed a "cartilage separation" in the ankle joint... Basically a wear & tear/arthritic issue. They gave me a cortisone shot and I've had immediate relief with that and they will combine it with PT starting next week. Hopefully this gets me through training and IMCDA. Time will tell, however, eventually it is going to require a "scope" surgery by an orthopedic doc. I just hope it's after June! Fingers crossed that this works for now.. Btw, I think we fell off the same turnip truck somewhere....... I have chronic back issues (bulging disc, etc) that just love to flair up at the most annoying times possible as well. Glad your Achilles is showing improvement! It's good to know what you're dealing with. I didn't know people get those kinds of cartilage issues in ankles, but I suppose the makes sense since it happens to knees. I hope the shot gets you through CdA and you don't wind up needing anything too bad for surgery later on. Good luck! I'm officially screwed....... I'm out for IMCDA 14'. My ankle problem will not go away without the help of an orthopedic surgeon....Cortisone didn't even get me through a single short run. The pain is back with a vengeance. I can only hope that surgery will make it possible to run again in the future.. I'm beyond bummed...... Since I'm local, I will be around during race week to cheer all you guys on and I'll continue to 'lurk' on this page with hopes that I'm able to compete next year. |

I'm sorry that happened to you. I know you were really looking forward to this. Best wishes for the surgery and a complete recovery so you can get back on the road after it's healed. |

Regular 389 | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Raced for the first time this year here in Florida. The day started in the low 40's air temperature and the lake was 55 degrees. I was glad and was expecting cold water as I wanted to use it for CDA training. 1/3 mile swim was cold to say the least. My feet were frozen and numb on the entire 14 mile ride and feet were numb for the 5k and about an hour after that as well. Good news is finished 1st in age group and didn't cube up into an icicle. Joking aside, if the water is that cold for CDA which I expect it to be. I will be doing a more thorough dry down. Tom |

Extreme Veteran 487 Spokane, WA | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Thanks for the thoughts my way guys, I appreciate it. Hopefully next year will find me on the start line, but for now, I'm anxious to watch you all race! BTW the concerns over water temp at Cd'A this year should be a mute point. The race is a week later this year than normal and should eliminate most of the cold water concerns... Last year the week after IMCDA it was 103 degrees in CdA. While that's not exactly normal...., it is normal that the temps begin to rapidly warm up at the end of June. My guess is that water temps will be easily be mid 60's by race day this year. fwiw. |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Hrm... I would guess an even 60F for water temps. One week is not going to raise the lake temps more than 1 or 2 F . I wouldn't worry about the air temps too much though. They are likely to be above 50F. As long as it doesn't rain all day, body temps should be fine during the race. (Although ya it could be hot for the run, stay wet. Edited by Baowolf 2014-03-09 3:39 PM |

I've seen the water temps jump 2 degrees in a day up here... a week of warm weather makes a substantial difference in Lake Cd'A. |

Expert 3126 Boise, ID | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Dang I am late as all get out for Feb numbers but here they are.
Swim: 21,850 yards Bike: 198.17 miles Run: 29.6 miles
The run is still frustrating at the moment, calf and shin issues, but the other two are pretty close to what my plan prescribed. Run should pick up a good bit this month and should be back on track for April. Sorry to hear about the ankle issue, but thanks for the good news on the lake water temp. I didn't realize they bumped it a week this year. |

Veteran 930 Morgan Hill, California | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Weather is starting to warm up here in the Bay Area and days are getting longer. Good timing, as the time to really increase the volume is here for me. Got a nice 4+ hours outside on the bike Saturday. It had been a while since I had been able to do that, so it felt hard, but good. Looking forward to extending out from here. Hope the training is going well for everyone! |

Lets do some talking about gearing for the bike portion. I have been to CDA many times but have never ridden or driven the bike course. Any thoughts from those of you who have ridden the course before? Do you change your gearing or are the hills not bad enough to warrant a change? For what it's worth I will be on a 2008 Cervelo P2C in stock gearing unless a change is recommended. |

Veteran 930 Morgan Hill, California | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I run a 53/39 up front and a 12/25 in back. I have thought about going to a 27 or 28 as the biggest in back, so also am interested in hearing what others think. |

Veteran 493 Cloverdale, BC | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread 53/39 front. 11/28 rear. 185 lbs. 320 FTP. I'm not really anticipating needing anything smaller than a 39/28 for the 6% grades on the CDA bike course. But I am planning to ride the course on May 30th, and I reserve the right to change my mind after that. |

263 | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread The past 3 months I've been doing a lot of hill training and riding the bike course recently. Compared to last year, it seems like the hills feel easier than they did last season. I guess I question if it's worth the money to change gears. I'm local, not spending a lot of money just to get here and I cannot justify the spending cash to change my gears. We are all different, go with what you want but the hills are not that bad for the common AG athelte. |

Veteran 493 Cloverdale, BC | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread It really comes down to cadence and power. Find a nice 6% grade and ride up it at 70% of your FTP in your easiest gear. If your cadence falls below 70 then you probably will want an easier gear. |
