The breakthrough was REALLY cool though. Last year at a swim clinic the instructor spoke about "sneaking up on the water". I was trying to just not drown in the water, so "sneaking up" was beyond me. Yesterday, for the first time, I felt what she meant about "sneaking up" and it was awesome! It is totally dependent on my timing being perfect, but when it works, I felt like I was flying or gliding or something. I had my first glimpse of what fast could possibly feel like. I couldn't sustain it for more than half a length or a few strokes at a time, but it was a HUGE "feel for the water" breakthrough for me
Awesome. I think there are soooo many conceptual elements in swimming and it's so cool when you start to get it. Great work! |

All those supplemental things you listed above are soooo good for running. Keep it up! And look at the rain as an adventure ![]() ![]() Got my run in yesterday between storms....whew! I lived in Seattle for four years....Seattle rain did nothing to prepare me for Houston rain. It's like a whole different beast. It doesn't drizzle here....you get massive downpours, where your windshield wipers have zero chance of clearing water quickly enough. You can actually watch it build up on your windshield. I'd never experienced anything like that before. I've only been caught running in it once and it wasn't fun. But I am willing to do "beat the storm" runs....it's a little game I like to play ![]() |

With the way the back of my truck looks, I find it hard to believe I can't have everything I would need for any weather situation, but apparently I can still regularly come up short
Today is semi monsoon weather....so that's what comes with the hot and humid in October, I guess ![]() Eccentric wall squats -- found this in one of the Lava magazines and it's for people who have patellar tendon issues (which is one of the issues I inherited with my knee injury). What they said to do was to have your back against a wall, feet out far enough away so that when you squat to 90 degrees your toes are directly over your ankles, and then shift the weight to your injured leg -- squat down on one leg and when you get to 90, stand back up with both legs. I think they said to do it to failure or something, but I think that would take basically forever, so I'm doing 2-3x10. |

I was just looking at the Rock Hall event site and based on the last three years results I'd have to be at 2:30 which is doable but it all depends on who shows up that day as to whether that's good enough. It is too bad that the Pacific NW special qualifier for 2014 already took place in September. I think I'll try to get a few of these races on the schedule and then keep my fingers crossed. It's also kind of hard to project too much from previous times without knowing the course but a flat bike works to my benefit as I am not a terribly strong rider. I'm lucky...I age up to 45-49 next year so I only have to do a 2:40. |

Halloween was cancelled here for the last two years due to hurricanes/storms so the neighborhood kids are hyped and have been out ringing door bells for over an hour now. I was able to snag the one candy I don't like....milky ways....so I'm good for the evening. Nicole, tx for the explanation on the eccentric wall squats. I'm going to add that to my single leg routine. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Super excited this morning for a number of reasons. 1.) Made it through last night without having any Halloween candy (no trick-or-treaters, so the package didn't get opened). 2.) My training plan calls for a rest day! 3.) I just signed up for a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving, which I will be doing with my sister (a marathoner), her husband, and two of their kids (all athletic and veteran 5K racers). After my October tri was cancelled due to the gov't shutdown, I was super bummed--this is getting me excited again. It will be my first official race (ever, if you don't count the 'fat-girl' relay one of my high school track meets used to have for the throwers). Hope everyone is having a good day! |

I have a problem with consistency! Made it in Oct, would have made it in Sept, but for a 3 day illness near the end. November goal: Faithfully stick to my training plan, even rest days. May be difficult with the food and family events around the middle and end of the month, but I gotta try. |

![]() | ![]() Very important race weekend for me. So long as I don't blow it, I have a good chance of making the elite xc club nationals team. I am also awarded the gift of sleep. A Sunday meet means no Saturday practice so I can sleep in!!!! Also,Sundays race is at 10:45 plus it's daylight savings! Double sleep in! I am saying this to make myself feel better because I am sooooo tired right now. Edited by Asalzwed 2013-11-01 8:57 AM |

RE: Turkey Trot...I'm thinking of doing one, too, and like Matt said, the serious runners come out for it. It's sort of a XC course, too. Whether I do it all depends on how together we are for Thanksgiving by that morning (we do early dinner here around 1 p.m., so prepping is in full force by 7 a.m.). November goal: keep it up. Keep up the Bikram sessions, keep running, and do a little racing. |

I figured with a name like Turkey Trot it would be a gentle introduction into the world of racing. Oh well--live and learn. I don't think there are any pies involved in this race, but I'm pretty sure if there was anything that could get me over the finish line in anything close to respectable time, it would be pie. |
