Well done Jim. Great month.

Gabe-Reports from Challenge AC indicate that you picked a good race to miss. Rip currents were really bad on Sunday. Race was not wetsuit legal. MOP swim times were easily 90 minutes plus. Lots of folks closer to 2 hrs. Also heard the head winds were tough as well on the bike. A guy I know who usually pushes 19 mph+ for a IM bike distance was a touch under 17 mph. Run temps were mid 80s.

My June total was nearly 40,000 yds of swimming - over 20 miles.

<

You are in a different universe than me with that kind of pace. Doing the metric conversion, your swim pace is 1:38/100 yd pace for a 4000m - that's just sick my friend. Wouldn't even waste the effort getting faster cause you are already there. Nice going!!!
That is sick indeed. I would have a hard time doing it with flippers on (the big ones).
I can go that fast... in my boat. That is aquaman speed.

Thanks for your comments guys!  However, in the pool I have an unfair advantage by being able to do flip turns against the wall which does not happen in OWS :-)

Jim and Lisa, congrats on your HM races, well done!  Drew congrats on completing your 2nd tri, exciting!

Adding last workouts and a story from an unfortunate event, but happy that I can report it here!  Friday, day off :-), Saturday 15 mile run with lots of climbing (longest run this year since my ITB Injury, but doing better!).  Sunday a 30 mile mountain bike ride with tough climbing.  Today 1hr OWS

So for the unfortunate event, I was out on a mountain bike ride by myself in Lake Atitlan and was going through a tough long climb on a fire road going around a volcano while trying to reach the town of San Pedro la Laguna.  It was a lonely road, but I passed a police car on the climb and thought it was ok until after about 5km of climbing and 1km from passing the police car I was ambushed by a man with a hood and held at gun point.  At first sight I could not believe what was happening and he demanded that I handed him my money.  I told him to relax that I would cooperate and took the money out from my camelback and handed it too him,  He then took my camelback and started going through it demanding my phone and camera.  I told him I did not have a phone since it was in the back pocket of my shirt and not in the camelback.  He took away my Garmin (that one hurt and I felt like asking to take a last peek at my total ascent up to that point :-), he also took my waterproof iPod and then saw that I had my phone behind my shirt.  At that point he tried to grab it and I saw that his gun seemed home made *tubes with duct tape) which either it was fake or not really a good one.  Short story, I reacted by pulling my camelback and phone away from him, yelling that his gun was not real and that I was going to come back with the police to get him.  In those split seconds I jumped on my bike and flew down hill without looking back until I reached the police car.  I told them what had happened and they rushed to look for the guy without any luck.

I then rode 15 miles back home, hughed my family and told them what had happened and then had a beer to relax.

I know that my reaction was not ideal, but you never know how you are going to react in those type of situations and it is scary, but frustrating at the same time. I obviously took a chance, but fortunately I have a huge guardian angel and can now share my story here with the group - very thankful to be able too.  At the same time, I'm not going to stop going out because of this incident and will continue to enjoy going outdoors, just being a little more careful as to where do I ride by myself.

Gabe - glad to hear that you are safe. Understand the need to keep on going, but maybe riding solo in the jungle isn't the best idea. Take a friend the next time (or find a way to conceal a weapon on your bike). Be smart & safe!!!

Crazy story Gabe - glad you are okay. I think you needed some of my bourbon after that - a beer doesn't cut it at that point.

Congrats to everyone on a solid month. I took yesterday off. Looking at my logs I had 11 days straight of leg related activities and figured I owed my legs a rest. June was a good month for me. I'm starting to swim with some regularity - just need to swim longer and a bit more frequently. Running is coming back and cycling is hanging in there.

Back on the bike this morning for an easy spin.

Gabe- Congratulations on both the June challenge and your super hero moment of fighting off bad guys. I have to admit I grossly misunderstood you FB post about it and I thought the police were the problem, I blame not practicing my Spanish. I also thought it would have been a good time to break out Zacapa Rum, but you would not have enjoyed it, so beer was a better choice.

Holy cow Gabe, I'm going to echo Mark's sentiments: you win the adventure award for the month. Probably for the year. I'm so glad you're ok.

Adding in one more day for myself in June, thanks to a lovely trail run in the always-fabulous Rocky Mountain National Park on Monday (42:12).

And for the the July challenge, I present 1 hour of biking. I managed a 15.75 mph average! (Would have been 16 but I'm not comfortable biking on the the dirt road out to the main road, so I take that section very slowly.) Maybe the hours on the trainer are paying off. Maybe it was just a good day. Either way, it was a lovely after-dinner ride.

I've got a question for the group. After 3 years my Timex Ironman watch finally died. I have mixed feelings about it, because I don't want to spend money on another one, but I was disappointed in the Timex (I am not alone which is why the probably stopped producing them). My choices are, send Timex $75.00 and they will replace it for another 3 years of disappointment or buy something else. I was just wondering what everyone else is using and if you would buy it again?

Lisa- Congratulations on improving your bike speed. Even though it is drudgery, the trainer is a great tool for improving cadence, conditioning and speed. I've heard this saying that "Consistency equals Success" somewhere . An hour on the trainer is the equivalent to 1.5 on the road. I have the same issue when I ride. The first and last 1/2 mile from my house is a dirt road slightly larger than a 2 track and it has several curves and is heavily wooded. I am sure of certain death if I go too fast on it. It always brings my average speed down. It took me awhile to condition my mind to treat it as a warm up, and not feel disappointed because I was so much faster on the rest of the ride.
