SSMinnow - 2009-07-22 3:51 PM News from Lance.  Does this mean he is going to keep racing? Dare to dream.

Suzy:

Lance has already said he plans of riding the TdF next year. He also said he will make an announcement tomorrow regarding a new team with an American sponsor.  Johan would not comment, but I expect he will go with Lance to the new team. (BTW: I would not be surprised if it was ...Nike). Lance said he will ride for the team, but not manage or fund it. I do not expect AC to be invited. It will be interesting to see who else is on the team.

Yep, I'd expect to see a lot more black and gold in the tour next year.  Can you imagine Levi, GH and Lance on the same team again?  They'd show those youngsters a thing or two.

If you are in the market for a new road bike how do you research them for the one that is right for you?  First I imagine you establish a budget of $X.  What's next? Fit, feel, test ride, shop, etc...

i'm not looking,  just wondering what those of you that recently purchased bikes and those of you that have been around for a while do.

I would say BUDGET 1st. Figure out your price range and then start searching (TEST RIDING) different models. Figure out what a proper size frame would be (keep in mind if you are a 56cm on one, it doesn't mean that you are a 56cm on another) and ride a few. Determine if it is a TRI bike you are going for, or a road bike. No matter what the budget is, you can find a bike in that price range. Good luck if really are looking!?!

I'm not, yet  Already have the new tri bike and oldish roadie.  Truly, I'm just interested in what you do and those here on the MG that just bought new road bikes did.  Rightfully or not, it seems finding a new road bike would be easier than a tri bike because there are so many more out there.

I do have all the components, Ulterga, from the wrecked bike so I'm thinking winter project is hunt down a road frame and build a bike.  Might be fun.

I highly recommend building a bike if you have the time and energy.  I had a blast last year doing it.

Steve was right on though for purchasing.  You have to set your budget then figure out which bike fits you.  It's great if that 10k Pinarello fits you well but sucks if your budget is 2k.

Another thing to do is wait a few months until all the 2010's are out and they start dropping prices on the 09's.  That's what I did with my road bike, got it over 1k off original price.

It is really like car shopping, you have to visit a few places, don't buy the first one you like, check them all out.

If you do end up building a bike, let me know I have lots of info on it.

Wow, I keep lurking here and have fallen way behind on everyone's status.  TdF ends this weekend, then I'm back.

I've got to get in 100 miles on the bike in the next 4 days and I'm planning a 100 miler bike on Monday too.  Yikes.

What is said is that I need 7, and won't be around to do it..... Hey wait- Maybe they will have mountain bikes at the cabin we are going to?!

Tony- Ryan and I built my tri bike, and from a COST perspective that is the way to go, plus it teachs you a hell of a lot about your bike!

I hope everyone has a great weekend?  Doesn't sound like too many racers, but good luck to any and all of you this weekend!  I expect to hear about some HUGE breakthroughs in training when I come back

John,  I second the budget idea.  I knew I wanted a Trek and went in with the line, "Give me the best you can for X amount."  I got lucky b/c I got last year's model (just like what Tony was saying) which would have cost 2K more, plus, they made an ordering error and ended up giving me the next model up at the lower models cost.

If you are buying a road bike look around at what the local roadies are riding and ask them questions.  As you know we all love to talk about our bikes.

Talk to the folks at the bike shops.  Good bike shops will do some of the legwork for you on digging up good bargins - within the brands they sell of course.  Also be honest about what you are going to use the bike for. And consider the customer service that comes with the brand or the shop.  I knew the great customer service that Trek provides and my LBS offers free services and fittings for the life of the bike when purchased with them.  That is a big selling point.

Speaking of Trek's customer service, I have a friend who just bought a new Trek Equinox TT bike.  On his first ride he hit a pothole and the entire frame shattered.  When he called the folks at Trek they replaced the bike with the latest model - free of charge!  I thought that was very cool.  Plus now he has the latest Equinox with bright metalic orange paint with gold flecks in the paint job.  His bike sparkles!  JEALOUS MUCH!!!

WOW, that concert music brings back memories of hours spend skating round and round the skating rink.  POUR SOME SUGAR ON ME!!!!!!!!   Gotta love '80s music.  I'm off to plug Poison into Pandora now. Thanks for the inspiration.

Totally off topic but too amazing of a coincidence to pass up.  I was browsing a website called pictureisunrelated.com when I found this one.  This happened here in Raleigh NC a month ago. Some student from NC State stole a bunch of highway traffic cones and made this monster out of it.  I thought it was hilarious and can you believe they were going to charge him with larceny? Some people have no sense of humor.

Hey guys - just checking in.  I've been in a little bit of a slump lately.  I think it was mainly due to boredom.  I've been doing basically the same workouts on the same days for the last - well I can't remember how long (with the occasional adjustment for a race or two).  So this week I decided to mix things up a bit and instead of sticking to the schedule, just do want sounds good that day.  As long as I'm getting all the training in by the end of the week, I figure that's what matters.  Seems to be working cause I don't dread my workouts any more.  It also helps that I've been able to get back to running (well, run/walk but at least I'm moving forwardSmile).

No races for me this weekend - just a one hour run on Saturday and a one hour ride on Sunday (or maybe the other way around depending on how I feel Saturday morning).  Good luck to anyone who is racing!!

Danett - welcome to the group!!

John:

One more thing about building your own: there will be some bicycle-specific tools required. If you don't have them or cannot borrow them from someone, be sure to add the cost of these tools into your budget, e.g., crank pulling tools, pedal wrench, cassette tools, third and fourth hand tools, chain link tool, etc.)

John - when I bought my bike I did what everyone else suggested and started with my budget - I didn't want to go into the shop and be drooling over the 4k bike when that wasn't in my budget. (ok, it didn't stop me from drooling, but at least I went into the shop knowing what I was going to ride).

My second step was a lot of in-shop and on-line research.  I created a comparison spreadsheet so I could see component specs side by side of bikes within my budget.  During this time I was also thinking about what was more important in the decision factor, ie - I decided that a bike a better group had more value than carbon seat stays.

I was able to narrow it down to 4 bikes using my requirements and then 1 via test rides.

Can I just say it????  After last night I think Contador is a selfish brat! who speeds up for no reason and drops his teammate who was high in the standings.  I cannot wait to hear Lance's news about his new team.  I am certain it won't contain AC!

Had a good long run today. Honing my new fueling skills and sweating like a dog. Short swim planned this afternoon.

Thanks for all that weighed in on my dress dilemma. I should have know the group would vote "Go commando".  Problem solved. Now I don't need to think about losing that last stupid pound!

Radioshack?  I could have gotten 1000 guesses and never came up with that one.  Cool to see him sticking around.  I wonder if this means he will have a cycling team and a tri team???

That's funny.  My wife said the exact same thing yesterday as we were driving and listening to a Poison/Bon Jovi/Great White/ John Cougar Mellencamp (who happens to be from my home town, BTW) compilation made by her sister.

Does anybody make really great music anymore?  Other than maybe the Black Eyed Peas - of course, Fergie could stand on stage and do sign language and I'd like it Laughing

Snuck out of work at lunch time to ride for an hour. I just got a new stem with more rise and wanted to check it out and I needed an hour according to my plan. Well, about 8 miles into it I could feel cramps coming on in my calves. I fought them off for the next 9.5 miles. I had eaten well and had had a banana too. When I got off the bike my feet and hands started to cramp as well. Fought that off too. I did do 1 1/4 hors of strength and core this AM. Maybe that contributed. I am going to have to pay more attention to nutrition and supplements now. It really decreased my pleasure on an otherwise fun ride.

For the record, I officially hate yellow jackets.  Got stung four times.  Granted, I really didn't like the stinging part, but the location is what's getting me - on my left arm just below the elbow - or to put it words triathlete's would understand - right where I rest my arms on my aerobars.  Well, I guess I was due for a couple recovery days anyway.  - I don't like this whole "not training" thing, but my body definitely needs it.  Hope everyone has a good weekend.
