Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() SSMinnow - 2010-03-03 9:02 AM Well, today is Wednesday, so it must be time to start thinking about the weekend! Who is racing??? some details might be nice.... For the rest of us, it is getting close to the end of the off season, tell us the #1 thing you have learned since your last triathlon! Be honest....it will help us all. Bleh!! For about a week, I've been sick with a head cold. I had to ditch two workouts (long run/ez swim), which I've learned to just let it go because I needed to focus on my health! I'm hoping that this weekend will be a little bit better than last Sunday. I was so bummed that I couldn't finish the huge rolling hills. I was like 5 miles away from finishing....see my log for further info. But you know what - it happens to the best of us and all of us. What I've learned - I'm me. You're stuck with the body you got, so if someone is faster than you with SBR, who cares. Important thing is I'm having fun! The last couple days, I started to get the twangs of "why am I doing this?", "You need to be better and faster!", of put downs, but I contribute that to being delirious due to head cold. I'm glad this week is a bit of a light week for me, I needed to slow down a bit and a little break. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() First, I am glad you realize the body you have is a great one to power you.....I am sure we all say stuff like this. With a 26" inseam, I shouldn't be runner, but I am! And I sort of like the look of my shoulders....find those parts you love and focus on them. The thing I am learning is there is more to life than being faster when it comes to triathlon.....I know some only focus on speed, but I am trying to focus on other little things to keep me motivated. Otherwise, it becomes a grind and a series of disappointments if you fall short of the mark in a given workout. Feel better...GO DJ GO! CyborgQueen - 2010-03-04 6:37 AM What I've learned - I'm me. Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() EDIT 2: I just answered my own question. I had a bit of a long post about HR Zones and etc, then I found somewhere that I need to work on my Cardiovascular on the bike and speed work to be a little bit faster. Any one got some good exercises so my HR isn't always skyrocketing even on the flats? I also probably need to put in more Hill Repeats in my workouts to try to get more speed work. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Congrats Tracy that is awesome! Trina - You are going to have a great weekend, if you are already this involved, wait till you catch the bug after your first one ![]() What have I learned in the off-season... hmm... I hate power! Yeah that is it. It has held me so accountable while on the drainer. Somedays I feel like I am pushing hard, and I look down and see how much I am slacking off. My thoughts for my races this year are going to stem from something I read a while back and while it is not the exact quote, the concept makes me dig deep on some of my workouts for that extra bit that I do not think I have in me: "If you throw up before the finish line, you went too hard. If you throw up after the finish line or not at all, you did not go hard enough. If you throw up on the finish line, you ran a good race." |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Funny, I had a male friend who was a kick butt runner said the same thing. In half marathons, I have done all three...early in my careeer I never threw up, later in my career it is almost a given. The best part is you feel a million times better afterwards! Re: Power, I love it because it holds you totally accountable and is a better judge than HR on your effort. Can't wait to get my PT and take it outside to see how things change in the open air. jvanis - 2010-03-04 7:48 AM Congrats Tracy that is awesome! Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am also excited to get outside with the PT, I may make myself keep on pace with my plan inside for another month and then try to get outside for a few weeks before my first race. I would not be disappointed if MN did not see 1 more snow flake until next winter. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good morning all. Thanks to everyone for your contrats. For the moment I'm going to combine everyone's suggestions, starting with John. Extra money is going into the IMCA account at the bank so I can get the house rental, bike case and power tap for next year! DJ- I agree with Suzy. The best way for me to lower my heart rate on the bike is to gear down. Here is a neat experiment to try. Do a normal bike workout all in the little gear with a comfortable high cadance - about 90rpms. Then for the last 10 minutes or so put it in the big ring. You'll keep the same cadance b/c your legs will be use to that speed but you'll be amazed at how fast you'll go with that big gear. Also, no matter what workout you're doing on the bike, ride the last 10 minutes or so on the way home only in the small ring. It allows for active recovery. This is a great tip for racing too. Having the high spin with minimal pushing really helps get the legs ready for running. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() John, if you're headed to Atlanta do it before June - we need a place to spend the night on our way to St. Petersburg in early June. No race this weekend, but the itch is returning for some competition. I've learned that I really enjoy the sport. I enjoy the people and the training. But I also learned that until my kids slow down I'm never going to be able to put as much into it as I should. At one time this winter we were dealing with 3 basketball teams. This summer it'll be two baseball teams (travel baseball has already started) and and two softball teams (and my youngest missed the cut off by 14 days, otherwise it would be 3 softball teams). And I can't forget football and volleyball. I've made the decision to train when and what I can (and don't get too worked up when I can't) and focus on sprints and maybe an Olympic. Basically, I've learned that endurance sports are more about keeping me physically active rather than competing. Kid's activities come first. I don't push them into or out of anything (except away from soccer) so as long as they have an interest I'll be there. Tracy, congrats on the promotion. Trina, GREAT attitude. Like the shift from "think I'm ready" to "KNOW I'm ready" That one little thing makes a big difference in your ability come game day. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() First, welcome back Reuben...we have missed you!!!! Second, for all the girls in the group, I have a BIG DECISION to make before 3pm today....to cut or not to cut? I'm totally torn.....took forever to grow my hair out, but it is becoming a little damaged from all the swimming and it is a total pain in the butt to maintain on the fly......HELP!!! |

I'm totally torn.....took forever to grow my hair out, but it is becoming a little damaged from all the swimming and it is a total pain in the butt to maintain on the fly......HELP!!! If you cut it must be short. I had very short for a while, now I'm growing out. Short was quick to dry but you HAD to dry and style. I'm going long now so I can get the ponytail back. Makes quick lunch time swims much faster to become presentable back at work. Given the reasons you gave, I'd go short. It is much faster and stays healthier from the frequent cuts to keep style. Either way, we want photos. Actually, this is a good time for everyone to post some photos of what they look like NORMALLY (i.e. not all swollen, sweaty and nasty from racing) ![]() |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Keep it long, Suzy. No offense to you short haired gals, but I'm tired of the short hair thing. Pony tails and clips... |

Training last year I let my stylist do whatever she wanted.....she cut it (way short) and I was sorry. If you go shorter - go 1/2 way and see what you think. You can always get more cut off...but it takes a long time to grow it back. Just my .02 |

I'm glad this week is a bit of a light week for me, I needed to slow down a bit and a little break. I LOVE your shoulders, Suzy!!! I've always wanted to be one of those cut bodies... alas, it's just not me (unless I start pumping iron and popping 'roids and that ain't gonna happen!). We all have great parts of our bodies, you're right. We need to embrace them. I will say I like my flat tummy and small chest (yup, I do) -- even if fattyfat thinks I have a beer gut!!! Oh, and cut the hair. At least cut it a bit. Shorter hair looks much sportier and younger and very flattering (not that you need to look any more sporty or young, mind you!!). When I was a longer hair gal and going shorter, I just had the "I gotta be able to put it in a pony tail" rule about length. I've since ditched that and gone short bob and now just wear hats for running, or just let the hair flop around and it's fine. But I find shorter hair much more liberating!! |

That's what I would try, and I'm at my EASIEST gear, and going a miserable 10-12mph. That bums me out, seriously! And sometimes when I do slow down as much as I can, my HR still kind of sky rockets, so I have to STOP the bike. Wait a few minutes, then get back on. My avg has always been under 15, roughly 14.5 or under. So, if I keep doing this, I feel like I'll never be able to get faster. :-( I know it takes time, but I hate the way my heart and body reacts to something so "easy". |

One of my kids' grandpa's is former gun range owner and has a gun room/vaultin their house so the kids have definitely been exposed already. And my son loves to tell all of his friends that his grandma already bought him a gun and when he old enough like 6 or 7, he's going to learn how to shot it. And as far as the hair, do what feels easy to manage. I keep my hair long b/c a) it frizzs up when it's short and I look like a poodle and b) I love the ponytail!!!!!!!!!!!! |
