Great info, thanks Bill!  Don't forget your headlamp if you have one for the transition area before the race.

They have portable light towers around transition and I thought there was plenty of light around the area, though if you need to see what your doing in the porta potties it was a tad dark in those.  Otherwise you can get by fine without a light.

My transistion bags always includes for emergencies: headlamp, toilet paper, xtra crack pipe, spare goggles.

Based on the constantly changing forecast - might want to rainX the sunglasses also.

This is my first IM so there is much that I am thinking about but I am wondering what all I will need in my transition bags and special needs bags.  I dont want to forget anything.  Is there anyone that has a list they use that they can forward that might help?  Am I thinking/worrying too much?

I was wondering how we were going to start in the dark, but I will be pissed if it gets delayed much.  Really would like a shot at finishing in the light of day .

Shouldn't be held up to late.  I recall reading a race report about 2008 when it was delayed aprox 10 minutes so there was enough light on a sunny morning.  If it's cloudy maybe add another 5-10 would be a guestimate.

Hope the weather holds up for the race.  Wish I could be there.  Had to laugh at your list especially toilet paper, found that out at Steelhead 70.3 in 2008.  Always have some TP with me now, along with goggles, I should add a cheapo light for those dark mornings.

Hmm, it might be the float, though for me increased float has meant less knee trouble. An abrupt change in knee position at the kind of volume you'd be doing going into an IM kind of makes sense for the symptoms you describe.

Close second would be cleat position. A few millimeters difference shouldn't have caused two barking knees so quickly, tho...

Taper madness is real.

Keep it simple and don't put anything in your SN's bags you must have just in case the bag is MIA upon your arrival.  Bike SN's I had a tube and a couple of CO2's and maybe a PB&J. I didn't stop as I hadn't flatted and my nutrition was fine.  No reason to stop if you don't need to.

Run SN's long sleeve top and a PB&J.  The bags were right along the road near the battleship and easy to grab, so I took half a sandwich and kept on moving.

Just set up your transition bags with what ever you'd wear based on weather.  I did full changes at both T1 and T2.  T1, Helmet, sunglasses, Garmin, socks, cycling shorts, top and arm warmers, T2 was shoes, running shorts, top, hat, change of socks just in case, wifes Garmin.  Wish I would've had a clip on light since lap 2 was dark in the park and the last bridge coming into the finish.

They had stickers with your race number on it for your bags.  I also used a sharpie to mark my bag a bit more so it was easy to spot.  T1 I grabbed my own bag, T2 someone handed it to me.  I didn't notice help at SN's but wasn't paying attention since I was fine without it.

I was paranoid about losing SN bags so brought a wide roll of masking tape and used it to plaster my bib # on everything in more than one spot.   Oh, and I hope the post race collection spot is a little more organized than last year.  Jeesh, despite my marking effirts, it must have took me 20 minutes to dig though the piles and finally find all my gear.

I'm looking forward to doing this IM next year. I have some motivations that are somewhat different than many. I'd like to invite you to visit my site where I have a few links that you may find interesting.

Here's a short excerpt from the site....

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I went through nine major surgical procedures in as many months just before I retired in October 2009. Those surgeries included Facial Reconstruction, five Septorhinoplasty procedures, right shoulder reconstruction, disc replacement, and a few others that were mandatory to keep me ticking. I’ve been diagnosed with Traumatic Brain Injury, Post Traumatic Brain Disorder, Post Traumatic Chronic Headache, a Higher Cognitive Learning Disorder, Short Term Memory Loss (Unless you ask my wife, then it's long term) and a multitude of other closely related issues. The Veterans Administration ultimately rated me as 90% disabled.

I will be dedicating my participation to the friends that I have lost along with the countless other Operators who have been injured or killed in Afghanistan and / or Iraq, as well as to the families who have lost their husbands, fathers and sons.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I WELCOME ANY ADVICE AND/OR TIPS ANYONE MAY OFFER!!

I have a few questions about race details

  • As we enter T1, our bags will be there.  Do we grab our bags or will someone hand them to us?  Found it!  "You will grab your changing bag as you enter the transition area after the swim."
  • Do we were the our number on the bike or just the run?  If I recall, last year we needed to wear it for the run only and the RD seemed to discourage us from wearing it on the bike.  Does that sound right to you?

If I'm not mistaken, and I could be, there is a separate number for the bike and then one for your belt.

Right, there is a number for the bike itself and one for your helmet and one for your race belt (or you could pin it on).

In some races, they seem to want you to wear the belt the whole time but I think that we only had to wear the belt on the run last year.  Is that what you remember as well?

If they find your run number on the bike course you will get a penalty something like improper disposal of equipment.

The weather is interesting today they have winds out of the south 20 mph and 6 foot swells, I could imagine getting blown right past the turn bouy...the good news water temp went up to 74.8

Just back to BT - thanks for all the good info on cap, booties etc. I'm with Camaleon - I hate the cold and will go with cap and swim socks from the posted website. Hey, I live in Atlanta.

Along that line, I plan to bring (old) sweats, socks, sneakers and cap for pre-race time-kill. Perhaps more time-kill in the HIM than IM, but don't want blue lips and shivers while I sit around. I presume they will find their way back to me via the pre-swim bag.

So, 6 foot swells? Serious? I've never done an OWS aside from lakes, and the B2B race flier promised pool-smooth water plus a friendly current. Guess that was before I paid the entrance fee.

Good luck to all you IMers - wish my body could handle that. I would love to upgrade from M-dot 70.3 window decal to the red M-dot. Oh well, 48 isn't the new 30 for everyone.

JB the big swells are in the ocean not the channel, but if we have wind we will have chop, 20 mph is enough for whitecaps...I swam the full course a couple weeks ago into a north wind about 10 and it was like a foot of chop in my face fun as hell. Whoever said pool like surfaces could be right with no wind but they could be full of it also.

Thanks kenbert. 6 foot swells just didn't sound right - must have misread that thread. Chops would be annoying too, so hoping for a nice mellow windless morning. Sunny, 65 degrees, no wind -a perfect day.

There was a bag drop near the start for the full and I assume the half is the same way.  A bag with your race number will magically find it's way back to T2 with all that you wore before the start.  Believe it was bins with number ranges on it.  I noticed someone mentioned having to look for there's, not sure if that was on BT or elsewhere.  But I found all my bags from the day sitting with my bike when I finished the full which made it nice since I needed those clothes at the finish.

BTW if you need a neoprene cap and booties for 72 degree water your man card will be taken before your allowed to start the race.

If you arrived Sunday a.m. to find your alll your bags next to your bike, you got VIP treatment.  Three of us searched for 45 minutes or so for all our bags and gear.  They were piled and scattered in different areas in T2 some contents spilled out of some bags or perhaps had just been picked up loose from T1.   It was a mess, and there were no security controls in place.  If you wanted a bike or gear, it was yours for the taking.

Sunday morning?  In 2009 they were sitting all together when I finished just after 7pm.  I grabbed a piece of pizza and drink then, I went into T2 I grabbed the clothes I needed out of the bag I dropped off at the swim start, handed the bags (T1, T2, both SN's bags, and the swim start bag) to my wife and grabbed my bike and we were getting on a trolley back to downtown.

I wouldn't be real thrilled to have to dig through piles of bags.  I was impressed how well they put everything together at the finish.
