Do you guys wear socks when you ride?

So what's your preference on shoes?  And how do you keep them clean while lasting long?

I never wear socks. Though, next winter, I'm sure I'll need to start! My mountain bike shoes are big enough for socks, but my road shoes aren't. I'll be swapping cleats, I guess.

As for cleanliness... aside from hosing them off on occasion, I don't do much. They are funky, and I've learned to live with it.

Good morning!

Re socks: i definitely wear socks for both running and cycling. But like Fred, I only have road shoes (Mavic ones i got a fantastic deal on) and i notice the heel rubs a bit even if i have low socks on.  If wore shoes that were designed to go sockless i might give it a try but at this point i am not wearing a tri oriented shoe for either sport - and I really like certain socks.  I love love the double layer wright sock. They are thicker and great for this time of year.

As for today. I am starting to realized that i need to do something about my heel. It is a little inflamed at the back on the bone where a shoe might hit the upper ankle.  It gets sore up and down stairs and with extra walking.  I was really dumb yesterday and wore heels at work. I know. Dumb.  I justified it to myself about pulling the outfit together. So not worth it. Sitting all day at work is actually a bonus

I am going to try biking. If that goes well i might try a t-run but if not, just rest.

I have 10k this weekend which i wasn't really going to race this weekend but i was going to pick up the pace. It's a great race where they raffle off a year lease to a Mercedes but I am wondering what I should do about that too. Sigh.

On a positive note, I had a great swim last night. I was wondering why the coach hadn't sent out the workouts this week and we found out why when we got there.  Time trial.  She likes to do 400m time trials to set our paces and i hadn't done one since last year.  Surprisingly it went well and i felt pretty good in the water and identified an area to improve on.  I seem to constrict my breathing when i am pushing harder in some sort of panic mode. I can practice relaxing a bit so i can breathe better.

you could use toe covers instead.  Although there are winter days that I use socks AND toe covers

bzgl40 - 2012-04-12 10:59 AM Jen, have you changed running shoes recently?

Nope. Been using the same type for ages - Asics 2150's - switch them out religiously after 600k.  I think i am on something like my 6th pair.  I did tie them tight and felt some rubbing on my Sunday run ... is it possible i just bruised it a bit? We were out for over 2 hours?

It's probably a stupid volume/intensity issue ...  i did a HR test on the Friday running paces i haven't done in a long time.  Then late on Saturday i did 3 hours on the trainer.  Sunday, I went for a long, slow 18k with my sister with some decent but not ridiculous hills.  Not sure which is the culprit - i felt fine after the first two and the right heel thing didn't come up until the next day ... booo!

I know it doesn't need to be said here, but triathletes ask the strangest questions.......   Just when I think I've heard all of them, a new one pops up in tri talk.

Game today is to figure out which is the craziest....and there is a clear front runner

you want me to just give you the answer????

OK, how to remove an M Dot logo from a branded wetsuit because he doesn't feel like he's earned the right to wear the M Dot.  I get the intention, but the action is a bit misguided, IMO

If I don't like how something looks, and I'm not sure I can alter it, I don't but it. Problem solved. I mean, I do have some ugly gear because it was on sale, but it's not so bad that I couldn't deal with it.

I was totally going to blow off my ride today.  I was dragging and was not into it.  Then I got angry and decided to go bike to blow off some steam.  I couldn't tell if I was tired and should rest or being lazy.  Now that the ride is done I can say clearly I was just being lazy.

I am glad you got mad so you could get you bike in...I am usually the other way around.  I am going to do my workout and then I get mad and don't do it....it would be better if I worked it like you.

Did a full on test run of the TT I'll be doing on Sunday (hill climb on my road bike).  Full race setup with the exception of carrying a water bottle.  Did it in 22:33, where last year I raced it in 23:28.  Right about where I hoped to be.  Hopefully with a little adrenaline and motivation, I can get it a little closer to 22:00, but anything under 22:30 would be great.

Got a 2000m swim in last night 5x50 5x100 and then a 5x200.  I am VERY happy with my swimming, who woulda thunk that all you needed was to actiually swim to swim good???  LOL

Then i went and ran on the gym treadmill for about 3.5 miles, i just did not want to run outside at 9pm

Tonight i will do a 6.5 mile run as i went to bed around 11pm and could not get up this AM, tomorrow i will do a 2 hour group ride and a 3 mile brick run, probably only one of 2 or 3 bricks i will do this year, as i do not find them necessary for my anymore.

Sunday is the last day of the Bethel Spring Series, so i will do the 4 and 3-4 races, since i am in no contest for either podiums, i will probably go prime and attack hunting, maybe get a decent finish to keep the good thoughts and momentum going.

Fred D - 2012-04-13 5:38 AM Ok, 2 more hours of on call and then a 3 day weekend starts for me. Hoping to ride today and probably Sunday. I've been a little bit conscious of my friends accident recently, but I need to just get back on the bike. What are your weekend plans? Discussion topics? Isn't new Orleans 70.3 this weekend? If so Michael Raelert is racing, so should be interesting.

Fred, I know exactly how you feel, When my friend Markus died in that race a month ago, i could hardly look at my bike for a week, i had no desire to get on it, and that is partly why March was soo soft a month for me. It was really hard to get back at it. And then that transferred into crappy diet and no swimming or running either for me, i had lost all motivation. Mental issues are sometimes harder than physical injuries, hang with it, it will get easier, and no better way than getting on the bike for the first time.

My on call rotation is just starting.  I do a week of backup and then a week of primary.  Backup is not so bad but it does mean I need to be close to the house so it means nothing too exciting for the weekend.  We are meeting with an agent tomorrow about listing our house so we can get back to living in one household.  At one point in time last week I had the AC on but looks like I might have to turn the heat on tomorrow.  We are going from 90's to 50's.

Looks like "on call" is a theme. Just did a short, ez pre-call swim. I've accepted the fact that I'm not going to sleep till 11am tomorrow.

Good morning!

I didn't train yesterday - my heel is really bugging me - not because it hurts a ton but because it's there and I really can't get a read on how bad it is.  It is now actually has a rubbing or creaking feeling when i massage it a bit and move the foot.  This morning it was stiff but not sore and i could feel the rubbing when walking but again it didn't hurt during my walking around this morning to get to work.  I think i might try icing it today to see if the swelling will go down a bit and maybe that will help.

We are planning on going out of town to bike for a few hours tomorrow - first outdoor long ride of the year.  And i have to see how my heel will do and if it's smart to line up for the 10k race on Sunday morning.  I most certainly wouldn't race it but if i complete I can be in the raffle to win the car!!!

Thoughts? Good vibes?
