Expert 1481 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Finally got an outdoor ride in at lunch today. About 6 weeks later than last year. Pretty good quality with lots of hills. Then tonight I went running with my ten year old daughter Cayden. We did 8.6 miles @8:32/mile which is pretty good for somebody that age who isn't training for running. She is in good cardio shape from soccer but still. She was feeling it at the end but I was really proud of her and that's the longest she's run to date. |

Extreme Veteran 863 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed enders_shadow - 2013-05-13 8:44 AM OK - race report is up here: http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid... A couple of questions now that I've thought about it more... 1) What is that part of your body over your hip on the back? Why did it hurt (sore/achy - not pain) after the first 60 miles and how could I adjust to make it feel better? 2) I generally lived off pretzels and bananas, with a few other treats thrown in - should I have been more adventurous? More variety? 3) What sort of adjustments will I be making in a race where I don't have a feed station every 12-15 miles? I never spent long at any of them - usually < 5 minutes, a little longer at the lunch/turnaround - but when I'm on the bike for the whole 56 or more, what will be different? Thanks for the advice!
Congratulations Kristen!!! |

A lot going on. I got to meet Michele and her family on Sunday which was cool. Friday was a long day. A very close friend of ours lost their baby two days before the schedule induce date. The funeral/memorial and gathering was on Friday. We have been comforting and helping with them the whole last week. They are very positive and spiritual people that we look up to and it has been rough needless to say. On top of that this weekend has seen the 24hr stomach bug that is going around here ravish our family, including me now. Ugh I don't like being sick. Mother's Day was good and a late Happy Mother's Day to all you moms on here. First race is Sunday though! Just need to heal up and focus on the recovery week. Then it is time to focus on REV3 in June. I will catch up on all the post here. So if I bring back up a subject I apologize now Man sorry to hear about your week Larkin. And am so very to sorry to hear about your friends' loss. Hang in, rest up, am sending some good mojo to you and yours. Larkin - first, thanks again for coming out to my race! It was so great to meet you!! Secondly, I am so so sorry for your friends' loss. What an awful thing to happen. You are so nice to be there for them during this difficult time.

Extreme Veteran 668 NW Georgia | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Beautiful day today; I really wanted to be out running in it. Instead I got in an hour on the trainer tonight. That way if my foot started hurting I could just stop & step off. Luckily, there were no problems. |

Hopefully I have enough time to get my brick run in. Arggg. Curious. With lots from this group doing and having done IMs what are your thoughts on getting a tattoo to commemorate the accomplishment. I have read lots of threads in BT about this that are always worth a chuckle. Now I am not a fan of tattoos and don't have any but thought of doing something so extraordinary, might be worth it. Full disclosure - I have even had the fleeting fantasy of getting something if/when I finish my first 70.3 just because I imagine being feeling pretty proud of it. Of course I won't but I can't say the thought hasn't crossed my mind. |

Of course I won't but I can't say the thought hasn't crossed my mind. I don't have any tattoos, and the only thing that I'm passionate enough about that I've considered is something scuba diving oriented. With how I'm feeling about my tri experience so far, I can see an IM tattoo as something else I'd be passionate enough about as an accomplishment to be considered as well. |

I have 2 new ones in the works, but I want to wait until my 2 weeks off after IMMT to get them - my last child's name (upper back) & an art print that my husband painted on our wall when we were living in NYC (left bicep). Eventually I want to get something to celebrate my triathlon life, but I want to get some abstract swim-bike-run figures or something (maybe even the words swim, bike, and run). |

Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed 3000 over/under workout in the pool this morning and then 1:20 on the trainer later. It's freezing here (30s) so no outside riding for me today. I was wondering if anyone has an easy way to explain swim breathing to children. My daughter is turning out to be an absolute rock star in the pool. She has major potential, and she loves it. When I asked her if she's exhaling when her face is in the water, she told me she holds her breath. I got in the pool with her and tried to show her how to exhale, but it's a difficult concept for a 6 year old to grasp. I know that once she gets it, she's really going to do well. Any advice? Things I can do to encourage proper breathing technique in the water? She's started team swim in 4 weeks and needs to learn this now. Thanks! |

I'll be getting one on my calf. Not sure if I'm going just M dot or something more intricate. I have no tats as of now. I thought of getting something Sigma Chi related in college, but that time came and went. |

Extreme Veteran 826 Bristow | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Jen, Have you tried bobbing with her? Basically she bounces up and down going in and out if the water and then obviously breathing out while going under and takes a breath when she comes out. Maybe make it into a game of some kind? |

Champion 6107 Out running or enjoying a fine glass of red... | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed One of the coaches here explains it as "talk to the fishies, listen to the fishies." Basically you blow bubbles at the fish under water to talk to them, and then turn your ear to the side (to breathe) and listen to what the fishies say back... |

What did the coach diagnose as your major problems and which drills were you assigned to correct them? Are you going to continue to work with the coach or was this a one time thing? |

Eventually I want to get something to celebrate my triathlon life, but I want to get some abstract swim-bike-run figures or something (maybe even the words swim, bike, and run). Let me clarify - I have not historically been a fan of most tattoos for some are kind of hackneyed. However, I have seen a number that have been really cool and interesting. My daughter is adopted from China and her Chinese name is Tian Mao Rao. Tian = heaven and Rao = earth/grass. Not too long ago I saw someone with 1/2 of an M-dot (he did a 1/2) and said he was going to fill in the other when he does a full. I thought that was rather neat and so I thought it would be kind of cool to get a tattoo with Chinese characters of heaven and earth and something to symbolize 70.3 with 140.6 to be filled in later sort of representing the continuum of things (maybe also including 13.1 with 26.2 to be filled in later). Don't know yet. |

It sounds like they have a good support system but if they are struggling down the road you can direct them to Compassionate Friends. I'm always available to talk to them as well knowing how bad that reality is. |
