Awesome job Joe! What earphones are you using? I can never get mine to stay in and they become more of an annoyance than anything.

Finis Neptune. Nothing goes in the ear - noise is conducted through the bones in your cheek.

I've heard of those - how is the sound?

Pretty good. It is a basic MP3 player so if the underlying recording is meh, the sound won't be great. .wav files sound great - capacity is I thin 2G.

I found that for Olys, you need to get to the point where you are comfortable in the zone 3-4 space. I'd opt for more frequency/less duration workouts. Wouldn't generally run more than 1 hour or bike for more than 2. In terms of structuring, what are your strengths/weaknesses? How frequently do you want to train? There's no magic plan - a lot of it is trial and error.

Joe's right, the up tic from a sprint to an Oly isn't much. My problem, being a bad swimmer, I have to fly on the bike to catch the field. It is difficult for me to balance the bike effort, so I have legs left for the run. The longer distances are more comfortable for me, because I have long enough of a distance to take my time and catch the field after a bad swim.

Thanks for the pointer Jim and Joe.

I was told back in January to build my base… so I Cycled often, then added swim in February. I’ve been hitting one of the (3) sports 5 or 6 days a week. I’ve run marathons, so I’m comfortable with the run – I am focusing more on the swim and cycle right now. Good advice to gear workouts to more frequency/less duration.

I’m so new to this – it’s hard to know my strengths/ weaknesses. My weakness is that I’m not independently wealthy (ha). The more I talk to people and visit Multi-Sport stores… I see what an investment this is (different than marathon running). I’d say my weakness is the Swim and Transitions. I found a group that does open water swims on Saturday mornings when it gets warmer – I think that will help. In the last leg of the race, I am hoping to pass people on the run… thus making me feel pumped about the overall experience.

Joe- how long did it take you to get used to the music? I tried it, but it felt so awkward as I'm used to just hearing the rhythm of my stroke. I actually only used mine twice since I felt like the beat of the music was making me want to alter my cadence.

I had a great weekend skiing. Actually did an all day Bump lesson on Sunday- and with my improved technique I am way less sore than I usually am. So, time to do weekday S B R :-) Only five weekends til the mountain closes- then I will get more S B R on weekends too.

Only swim with music when I'm doing long sets (1000yds+). I don't use music for drills or speed sets for the reasons you mentioned as I too find it distracting. If you want to get your cadence straight, try swimming with a tempo trainer - like a swimming metronome. Incredibly annoying, but it forces you to pace evenly.

This sport can be a jealous mistress. The more you spend, the more it asks from you . I have 4 teenagers, with 1 in college, and a wife I had to convince that I was serious. I tend to low budget things and buy those things that truly help my training/racing and balance need vs want. I have no fear of ebay either. The most important investment is your running shoes, everything from there is gravy. My first tri I rode a $15.00 1970's 10 speed I bought at a garage sale. I've upgraded a couple of times since then.
Transitions are easy, watch a couple of video's on YouTube and the run a few dress rehearsal bricks in the month before the race. If you have a plan and stick to it, you will do ok. As for swimming, I swim like a barge. Sorry I'm no help there.

I couldn't even get through warm up with it. I really wanted to love it- and I love not worrying about rain when running with it now.

I swam through college- so put 3-5 hours a day in pool- so I have a pretty set pace. I can actually do a 600 warm up without even opening my eyes. 17 strokes to a flip turn, 18 to a finish. It was a great way to get a few more minutes of sleep in college. I actually keep my eyes closed if I get in a tight pack in a race or OWS except for sighting. It seems more calm to me. I've never tried the metronome.

I keep saying I will try it again- it would be great to combat boredom.

Yes to the cost! I need to buy my own wetsuit this year, and even a low-end one is $$ (even on Craigslist!). And I'm thinking a trainer would do me good, but I don't have a few hundred dollars sitting around for this stuff. Right now I'm looking around to see what else I can see on Ebay or Craigslist. I've got a freelance editing gig going now, but that money will probably only cover the entry feel for the Oly. I'm crossing my fingers that I'll find a lucrative part-time job that can cover the expenses.... But on running, I'm sure you'll pass people. The swim is my weakest point and my biking isn't so hot either (I blame that on not enough time in the saddle, combined with the fact that pulling small children on trail-a-bikes and trailers means less miles and slower speeds when I do get out), but it meant as a strong runner, I could pass pretty much everyone I saw ahead of me on the run. All the runners who are comparable had, of course, finished their swims and runs much earlier. This is why I need the trainer. Though on the other hand, my oldest will probably bike on her own this year, which will be a great improvement over last year's bike caravan (hybrid + trail-a-bike + bike trailer).

Joe--nice swim!

Susanna & gtbks--welcome!

Very short bike ride on Sunday (biking with oldest who refused to go longer than a mile for reasons that were not clear to me), and an hour pulling the bike trailer with the youngest today. The first half was uphill into 18 mph winds with 35 mph gusts (s-l-o-w), but on the way back we were cruising along at 18 mph without any effort. I loved feeling the tailwind push the bike trailer up the hills.

Look at Dick's sporting goods for a trainer. You can get a low end mag trainer for around $100.00. I got mine there four years ago and have not had any issues with it. I use my trainer 6-7 months out of the year and have put a lot of miles on it. For wetsuits look at Xterra, they normally have a good sale on the Vortex through this site. I paid $150.00 for a full length one and my daughter paid $125.00 for a sleeveless. If you go to ebay for a wetsuit be very careful that you don't buy a used one from a state on the ocean. We buy wetsuits for our kids on ebay for skiing and tubing. We bought one from California and the salt water really damaged the neoprene. If you are a bad swimmer like me, a good wetsuit is like Lance Armstrong and HGH.

Shoes and pedals are going to give you about 2 mph more speed. If you are using nothing, you only derive power from mashing on the pedal. That also means you are probably wearing a running shoe. So, your not only does your power come just from mashing, but you are mashing a soft surface. As a result you will lose power. If you have toe clips, you will get a little more power, but you still don't get the power you get from a complete circle. Your power will again come primarily from pushing down, but you will get a little from pull back and lift, but again it is a soft surface lift and you are still wearing running shoes.
With clipless pedals and bike shoes your push down comes on a hard surface so you get more power directly transferred to the pedal, plus you get power from the complete circle. Meaning you teach yourself to make good circles all the way around the pedal stroke and give yourself power from both legs all the way around. It makes you faster with less effort. Compared to toe clips where you have to push down and scrap the bottom of your running shoe like scraping off dog poop to get an extra benefit, but it still won't be as much as with bike shoes and being able to make full circles.
Caveat: When you first get them you will fall down. You have to teach learn how to snap you shoe in and out. It took me about a half an hour riding around an empty parking lot.
I have speedplay pedals. They give me about 15 degrees of rotation, which makes my knees happy.

Thanks Jim for the info. Sounds like they would be worth the while.

45' speed workout. Main set was 7 x 400 at btw 5K and sub 5K pace. It has been a long time (over a year) since I did a full fledged speed workout and my hips are killing me. I did the workout on a treadmill and I always find that I feel like I am about to fall off the darn thing when I crank the speed above 9.0. Finding the speed has been remains very elusive.

An hour on the treadmill yesterday and 7.5 miles of 3+ of that speedwork this morning. Actually, a good deal of last night's treadmill was technically today, but my attitude is that if I start before midnight, it counts as all part of that day. (ETA: I don't make a regular practice of running at midnight, but yesterday was one of those non-stop days.)
