Foam roller controversy update:

I talked with my PT yesterday, who also thought 15 minutes every day was excessive.  She suggested 5-10 min. max so I'm going to do that, alternating days between upper and lower body so there's not so much stress on my shoulder.  She gave me some super dynamic stretches that she's actually been doing every day herself with good results.  I'm looking forward to giving those a try.

I also got an email from Tess, who said I don't need to do 15 min. and to just play around with it to find out what helps.  I'm getting the sense from this and previous workouts that she puts longer times/distances for everything in my training plan with the idea that I'll just do what I can.  I find that a little disconcerting so I'm going to ask her if she's doing that to establish baselines or if that's just her general approach overall.

I have to agree with both Matt and Erin. Some coaches do put in more than what they want their athlete to accomplish. Other coaches put things in on the higher side without telling why. These coaches make me wonder if they are looking at the individual and making individual training plans or just making a blanket plan for all. My coach knows my injury and works around it. He was the masters coach when I joined the team after I was cleared to start swimming after my surgery. He watched me learn how to walk again and then taught me how to run again. He knows what my limitations are and when to put limitations on me because I won't do that myself. He also knows when to push. While others have stopped training with him because for whatever reasons, he knows me and I know he won't give me a blanket plan but train me as I am. You're coach needs to know you. Train you and not others. Can you sit down with her and let her know how you feel? {{hugs}}}

After reevaluating my goals and looking at where I'm at physically, I've decided to put the coaching on hold.  My motivation for getting a coach was to avoid getting hurt in the off season while I was training for a HM.  For a variety of reasons, that didn't work out.  I've been sidelined for the past several months and having a coach during that time hasn't been helpful.  Now I'm back in roughly the same place I was at last year, rebuilding base.  I know how to do that and don't need to pay a coach to tell me "Do PT as directed and ease back into running/swimming/biking" for the next 8 weeks.  I sent Tess an email last night telling her that and basically saying, "I'll call you when I'm ready to do coaching again." I might take a few private swimming lessons from her in the future; she's really knowledgeable and could definitely help me with my weakest area.

I'm considering joining a local women's team where I can get in-person coaching plus the benefit of having others to train with but I'll wait until I have some better strength/endurance before I make a decision.  It's too bad it didn't work out but I've decided to cut my losses and move on.

All things considered, I think dropping the coach is a wise move for now (for your sanity AND pocketbook) until you get healed up and back at it again.  The women's team thing sounds like it could be fun and beneficial.  Is this a running team?  Tri team?  Workout team?

There are a couple of women's tri clubs, as well as several mixed-gender clubs and all accept athletes at various levels.  The price to join any of them ends up being less than or close to the same price as private coaching.  I see lots of club members in their racing kits and it's neat to see the support they give each other during the races.  It would also definitely make the training less lonely.

I think this is going to be as big as anything for you right now. Glad you were able to think/move through to an end that you're happy with.

Thank you thank you thank you, Melanie.  I needed that today.  I'm trying hard to have a better day than yesterday, focusing on gratitude and compassion toward myself and others.  I started my day with this song written by a friend:

Namaste. I honor the place in you in which the entire universe dwells.  I honor the place in me which is of love of truth of light and of peace.  When you are in that place in you and I am in that place in me, we are one.  Namaste.

(((Hugs))) to all.

ETA:  And some cute puppy pictures.

My son really wants a border collie.  We had a long discussion last night about it.

Do you know much about the breed?

I sent the third picture to my wife.  How could one say no to that.

Why?

ha! Not being rude/abrupt, but curious why a border collie? I'm assuming it came up in the discussion.

Thank you. It's a GREAT combination of style and room...and horsepower lol. Efficiently, not as much as I'd like. That's difficult to find in with AWD.

I never thought I would be driving a car that can go 0-60 in under 5 seconds. I also never thought I would LOVE driving a car.

I'm going to have to offset it all by running even more, I suppose.

I had to go back to this, BC it is such a valid point from my standpoint. TW drove a series of minivans over the past 20 + years and now has a convertible BMW 128i. It is a sweet little car and she LOVES it.  She is NOT going back. She is now a believer in having a car that you enjoy driving. Driving has become less about the miles and more about the smiles. It has been fun for me to see, as I had the Jeep for the past 12 years, which I really enjoyed driving.

I am a journey guy, not a destination guy.

This is now the third 'reprieve' or delay and the longer the Indonesian government waits, the harder it is going to be to execute them, and every precious day we get is not only a deep comfort to them and their families, but time to campaign and the momentum increases exponentially.

I'm incredibly pleased to report that all our shytestirring has created an international furore. Their story's been picked up by every major news outlet worldwide and it'll only increase. Pretty much everybody and their crazy uncle has asked Indonesia very nicely to reconsider.

It's shining light on the complete shambles and capriciousness of Indonesia's 'justice' system. Evidence, legal representation, due process, burden of proof, commensurate sentencing just don't exist here. They sometimes don't bother to confirm your identity or nationality before they shoot you.

As an aside, I'm also having an identity crisis here, but I'll sort it out. I'm a spiritual being first and a physically existent human second, I don't need to worry about nationality and shyte.

But that light on the justice system here, and for me, re-examination of the death penalty worldwide that our boys have sparked ... priceless and necessary.

THANK YOU to everyone for your concern and especially to those who have signed or shared petitions.

Yep. I was a point A-point B driver. It's important to get me reliably where I want to be. But if I have my druthers and means...I've been converted to the love of the ride.

Now I need to pass it on to my daughter so she doesn't miss out for 30 years. Why should boys have all the fun?

Funny thing is that they've had a 70.3 there for years. Red Rock did a good job. Then LifeTime took it over...and upped the price. Now IM has it and price is double Red Rock's. Will be interesting to see if people think it's worth it.

Considering the current winterpocalypse in the U.S. I can't complain (and frankly given how awesome my life is generally, just not quite so specifically right now) ...

but the storms have been so bad lately they've been blowing my roof tiles off (and when they go they often crash into and break other tiles). The Hobbit Maid's Hobbit Husband comes and fixes them and puts new tiles on as needed (and when it's not raining, which currently is never), but every day a new area of the house has got standing water. (Including right now and I can't even bucket it 'cause it's running down a wall, which is also what ruined my TV, sat decoder and DVD player yesterday. Different wall today though. Still had to move a heavy cupboard away from the wall just now).

Standing water = mosquitoes = Yanti in a murderous rage without the energy. (chikungunya, dengue fever, malaria and lots of other goodies are mosquito-transmitted)

Just got a "why the hell haven't you been at practice for 2 weeks" call from my coach. Ha!

Just when  you think you are under the radar.

It's complicated getting to practice without a car plus I was trying to manage my stresses (physical and life) so tomorrow's race should be interesting. But at least I had a relatively good excuse to tell him

I don't know that I am in HM PR shape quite yet so I think tomorrows goal will be to finish really strong, which means good pacing and mental strength. Who else is racing this weekend? I know Steve is!

I'd been hearing a lot of negative thoughts about this one. Mainly regarding the bike course as they were looking to keep it the same. 3 laps of an 18 mile loop with lots of turns and some 180's on it. Then add in MDOT numbers and it was looking like a mess. Advice given was to give it a year first.

25-30 sustained winds = no stroller run. meh.

So I've decided to work on some "speed". With a 3-4-6-4-3 week, does it make most sense to do pickups on first 3 and then a harder run on the second with a weekend "rest" between?  Again, no races to train for, so trying to make some kind of goal for myself to stay motivated and healthy.

Can't wait to hear about it!!!

I'm not racing BUT my LR is 15 miles. The furthest I've ever run!!!!!!!!! I'm so excited!

I could definately see her doing that.

The Ken Block videos are amazing.  He has done a whole series of those.

You guys are a terrible influence! I'm trrrrying to be economical!

That Ken Block video is out of control. Man, that indeed, looks outrageously fun. Also I can't stand segways. I would have definitely run him over

Haha! I did have all these same thoughts way back when, but largely managed to keep everything in check. Really getting into racing was looking too expensive in a number of ways and while going fast in the car does give a rush it wasn't as nearly as fulfilling when a motor does it vs when I was the motor. For some crazy driving, there are some gas powered go-kart places around here too.

I did manage to resist going for the turbo (a big thing being this was way back when it was the 2.0L vs the 2.5), and that difference later covered the race bike. My little brother went the VW route with the GTi and was really wishing for a race bike much more than I ever wanted a faster car.

Yeah, I won't be getting into racing. I used to do a lot of 4-wheeling when I was younger (remember, I'm from a small town!) and I know how expensive playing with cars as if they are toys is. Boy do I have some stories...

I'm a huge fan of the GTI. I love VW. But the hatchback just doesn't have the room the WRX did. It also doesn't have awd. And finally, the WRX is faster. Not that I really weighed that in though. I had also toyed with a golf TDI. J has a golf so it might have been a little too hers and hers

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
