SSMinnow - 2010-03-07 6:16 AM How big is that lake?  It looks small so I am suprised it is so cold.....is the Lonestar temp really going to be 72F?  Now, I am skeptical......

[

haha.  i knew that was coming from you.   not big.  like 2000 around the perimeter.  it's the most popular lake here in houston (that we can swim in legally!) for triathletes. but mostly used for dive certification, its like 40+ feet deep.  yes its freaking cold.

galveston isn't nearly as deep. temps this morning are 64.

if you guys peak in on the texas thread this lake has its own thread.  last week was the first week that a big group has been this year.  a family of nutria (big water rat looking things) took over that dock in the SE corner. ha! some dude stopped there to clear his goggles and came face to face with them.  LOL!!!

more pics on my FB.  under Sunday Open Water Swim Church Group.  we needed a good name cause on Sundays we all miss church to go swim.

jvanis - 2010-03-06 7:20 PM Well... my day sucked.  I had planned to take the day off and had a wedding tonight.  I went snowboarding this morning and 45 mins in, I took a fall that caused some damage.  After 6 hours in the ER, I broke a bone in my right wrist and another in my right hand.  I go see the ortho doc this week for a cast prolly 4-6 weeks.

Jeff, wow now that sucks.  Did you get to ride down the hill in one of the sleds?  Isn't that exciting....and expensive.  My oldest daughter got pulled out of the woods last year off her snowboard.  No broken bones but she was out cold (thanks Bell for building a good helmet)  Good luck with the broken bones.  My only suggestion is to have a long conversation with your ortho about the fact that you do tris and see iff they have any ideas.  Don't be afraid to go for a second opinion if the docs answer is just "rest."  Ask around your tri club, other sports groups to see if anybody has any reccommedations of a doc that will work with your desire to keep active.  Also make sure you get a good PT....they are very important and will help you get back to 100% much faster.

Trina, Congrats and good job.  You know can tell everybody when they look at you like you have lost your mind at the gym or talking about a workout that you are a TRIATHLETE!!

John, Dude we need to hang out.  OWS in water that cold when it is not a race, that is the definition of HTFU!  Was your face Numb when you got done?

Hope everybody had a productive weekend......I am off for my long run before it starts raining.

Was that due to the beer's before the swim or was it the water temp?

nice swim....water seems a little warm though. High 50's? That be like bathwater for us Canucks.

CONGRATULATIONS TRINA!!! Looking forward to hearing all about it -- how did the swim work, what did you wear, and everything else. LMAO about the guy on the treadmill. Good thing he didn't get hurt! He was probably doing everything he could to pull ahead of you...!!

Jeff -- that SUCKS!!! I'm so glad you are OK overall, but man, what a spill. I'm impressed that you're able to type so well! Are you OK doing all of your basic life tasks? How long do you have the cast? No advice for you, but lots of sympathy. Oh, and a x2 on the helmet. Phew.

John -- rockin' the lake swim!! Jealous! Our temps have been really mild here and a friend posted on FB that her kids were skinny-dipping in my training lake, said it was about 50 degrees crazy (PacNW kids!!!). Brrrrrr. My plan has an OWS within the next week or two, temps permitting. But there is a cold front moving in, including talk of some lowland snow flurries, so for now I think the lake will wait, and my @$$ will be forced on the trainer for tomorrow's long-ish ride. Boo hoo.

Wow, what a difference the offseason tough trainer rides has made for me.

Went for a group ride with my bike racing team (lol, I still haven't done a bike race)  this morning.  I was able to hang with the front group the whole time, drop folks on sprints and hill climbs, it was awesome!

Last summer I got dropped on all the hills and hung on for dear life.  This time I  took my turn every time pulling without a problem.

Awesome.  I hope all this high intensity mileage will have done the same for me.....I really want to get my bike out and see what the legs have in them.

Just so I am clear, those sewer rat things aren't in Galveston, right?  I S2G if they are in that bayou, I am not coming.

How about a swimming question for the group????  I am moving into a new phase of my training, increased intensity which I have never done before....I spent the whole off season on improving technique and before that just swimming 100s of yards was an accomplishment.  When workouts call for medium, medium hard, how should that feel?  Normally, I have HRM or Watts to tell me if I am where I need to be with running and biking, but have no feel for RPE in swimming at all.....I do have some MAX work, but at least that is a definition I understand.

And please be rudimentary in your answers....

Didn't Elaine buy a nutria hat to replace the sable hat that George lost?

First 5 mile run today.  Quad tendon and achilles are holding up well.  If they stay together I should make the Indy mini-marathon May 8.

Congrats, Chet.

Tony, you are on a roll today, you just made me laugh out loud X2...more so for the "head is numb" comment   Must be that adrenaline from dragging that group along with you on your ride today!

Congrats to Chet!  So awesome!!!  That is smoking fast.

Suzy, that is funny that you ask re: ez/med/hard...I had to gauge that today during this pyramid thing I did....so...
EZ is you can go forever
Med, you are giving a constant strong effort, and slightly out of breath at the end, but breathing at the end of the interval should not be labored to the point of panting...
Hard, I am sucking for air at the end of the interval.

For me, it differs by about 5-10 sec for each 100 as I go down in effort...1:55-2:00/ 2:05-2:10/ then can be as slow as 2:20 if I am really loving the ez swimming which I did today to preserve energy for the upcoming harder efforts.  I was able to negative split them which I could not do last week.

I think Kim described it well. (Good girl, Kim!! Rockin' the swimming talk!!)

You know how running leaves you more out of breath/higher heart rate than biking? Think of swimming as one more rung down that ladder... less out of breath than biking -- partly cuz if you can't breathe in the pool, you will DIE! (Literally!! LOL!)

For ME, moderate is like a LSD run. It's something I can sustain for a LONG time. There is some light effort but I never feel like I can't maintain it. I don't personally feel like I have levels of moderate, though. I kind-of feel like I have three speeds: easy/warmup/warmdown, moderate, and hard. Hard I can only sustain for about 100 yards, after that there is some element of pacing involved.  My deltas for 100s at easy/medium/hard are about 5 seconds (easy = 1:25 and slower, medium =1:20-1:25-ish, hard = sub-1:20 and faster).

Does that help??

On another note, I did it! I completed my first triathlon ever! I am so happy, AND I had a blast doing it! My total time was 57:17 - won't know the exact times of each portion for another day or two. I am very happy with this time. I kept-up with everyone in my heat pretty well until it came to the run. It is obvious that running is my weakness by far.

(Although I do have to say that the dude next to me set his TM to a speed faster than he could handle, because he kept hoisting himself up using the side bars and letting his legs dangle above while he caught his breath - sometimes for 15-20 seconds at a time. The rest of the time he was holding onto the HR bars with his legs flying behind him and this desperate look on his face. I tried ignoring it, but it was hard to do......I thought I was going to laugh my head off! I couldn't believe he wasn't DQ'd.)

Congrats!  Sounds like a great start.

Suzy,
Have you done a 500 or 750 or 1000 TT lately?  If not, I would set aside one day and do one.  If you have already done one...now is the time to take your split time for 100 yds from your TT and use it as a guide.

"Easy" should be slower than your TT pace
"Medium" should be your TT pace (depending on the yardage you are swimming that set)
"Medium Hard" should be faster than your TT time
"Hard" you should be feeling like you want to vomit when you are done (just don't do it in the pool

Being a runner maybe it would help to think of it as your mile/minute running pace, except with swimming you can push a little harder because there is less chance of injury because of the low impact, etc.  Hope I am not rambling....

Thanks to all that provided such great insight into swim pacing!  Kyla your pacing cracks me up....those are like my 50s!!!! I love fast women!

To answer your question, Dino I haven't done a TT in a long while because I hate determing how fast I swim (which is to say NOT FAST).  Let me ask a question on your descriptions, I always though the TT pace was your as fast as you think you can go pace for the distance.  Is that right?  I would hate to do a 500, do it wrong and have to start over!

me to.

i still think its pretty amazing how much 10 seconds a hundred makes in the pool.  i can add a bit more time to the run or bike and be ok.  but in the water i really pay for it when i get going to fast.

Suzy,

I think the first part of this article describes it better than I can....

http://www.active.com/triathlon/Articles/Set-a-Training-Benchmark-with-a-Swim-Time-Trial.htm

I will add that it also depends on your swim fitness.  I now usually swim a 1000 TT every 6 to 8 weeks and use my 100 splits from that until I test again.  I think the decsription above is another easier way to get  your splits.  I hate doing TT also, but I find it is the only way to get true pacing.  Think of it as your LT test for swimming.

Dino

Here are my times: 0:07:05 (swim-this includes the time it took to hoist myself out of the pool and run across a finish line at the other end of the room) 0:19:42 (bike) 0:30:30 (run=suck) 0:57:17 (total time).

I was MOP in terms of my swim and bike. I was definitely BOP with my run, although not dead last.

I'm pretty much at a loss as to how to increase my speed on the run. Is it me just being too careful that I don't bonk and subsequently play it safe by going too slow?...however, I must say that my HR was above my max HR throughout the entire run. Is it fair to say that since I just started running 12 weeks ago that it may take some time to build speed, and this time isn't all that surprising?

What do I need to do to become a faster runner? I'm sure that losing weight will help, but I would like to know what other people have done to improve their run times? Is it just a matter of increasing run training and my speed will increase over time? Given all this, I started from scratch with swimming, but don't have near the amount of trouble with it. I'm so confused....

Kyla - I've posted some pics on my profile. It shows my tri wear. Just wore it the entire time (top w/bra underneath, and shorts. Don't look at my hair. As a matter of fact, don't look at my body at all. But DO look at the last picture where I point out the dude that was cheating ;)
