Thanks for the inspires folks.  Things are still on a downward trend in terms of health, but I'm still at the office.  Feels very strange not working out while at work since this is when I do most of my lunchtime swims.

Anyway, I don't get sick very often so here's hoping I'm over this in a couple of days, enjoy plenty of Turkey, and then get back to training next week.  Yes, that means I'm basically writing this week off.

It's funny, I do feel guilty about taking the time off, but at the same time I'm kind of glad to do so.  It's been a whirlwind year, and now we're trying to get our house ready to sell, xmas, feeling crappy, etc., it's probably a good time for a (minor) break.

Geez am I that predictable!

The age calculation is very rough and not recommended for setting zones.  Instead try a 30min TT and only take the last 20min HR avg as your LTHR estimate.

http://www.trainingbible.com/joesblog/2009/11/quick-guide-to-setting-zones.html

If you notice, I'll send a lot of links from Joe Friel's blog... highly recommend his training bible for those that are looking at creating your own training plan.

evondo - 2009-12-22 7:22 AMJust curious, how did you determine that 135-140bpm is what you should be holding for the run?

gavisk - 2009-12-21 4:35 PM
Thanks for your answer, Eric.  I'm going to try the low HR thing and see how it goes.  I could definitely use some injury prevention for a couple of months.

I see an added benefit of developing some patience, too:  I just did a run and tried to keep my HR between 135 and 140.  It felt like I was crawling!

From the Mark Allen article I mentioned. He suggested 180 - age as a limit. Do you think that's too high? Too low? Too silly?

I bet money that Eric tells you to go out and do a LTHR test...

Or to go by RPE...

either/or

So I made it a point to negative split on my run today, but I think I was a bit extreme.  It was only a 3 miler but my first mile was 7:27 and my third was 6:14.  I am assuming this is waaay more negative than you guys were talking about.  I guess my question is- as long as I don't overdo it and am able to recover for my next workout, do I really need to pay attention to HR, splits, etc.?

I actually have trouble with this as well.  I tell myself that I am going to take it nice and easy, but by the end of it I am running way too fast.  Maybe I should try taking my HRM on my next run.

One thing that helped me with the running way too fast is to think negative splits.  I make a concentrated effort to not necessarily run slow, but an easy comfortable pace when starting.  I stick with that for probably 10 minutes and then I just find myself naturally speeding up until my run is complete.  Taking that time to go slow actually makes my overall running faster.  It takes a bit to get it nailed but once you do you'll run longer and stronger (and probably faster).

I am not a huge fan of running with my heart rate monitor.  I find it way to distracting.  And although I run with a Garmin I also pretty much ignore it as well.  I do glance at mileage from time to time since I wing most my routes but if you pay attention to pace and mile splits, etc you just get to tense worrying about the numbers.  After the run is when you analyze all that.

I think that was probably a bit big of a difference for a 3 miler but it also takes a while to get use to negative splits.  I don't really pay attention to splits, HR, or anything else other then RPE.  Which means some days I will run faster then others cause my body feels so much better then others.  For example, if I eat like crap I run like crap, or if I have an all nighter at work my workouts suffer.

The key thing is not to blow up at the beginning of your run.  Instead of thinking slow think nice and easy.  I use to finish runs feeling kind of sick to my stomach.  Now I don't.  I don't feel rested per say, but I feel like I gave the exact right amount of effort.  But that took some time to get to.

The optimal negative split in a race is 51% of the time for the first 1/2 and 49% the last half.  The goal of the workout is what determines how much negative split is to much. 7:24 to 6:14 is probably a little extreme for say a threshold run or intervals but if you're doing a progressive run and built the speed throughout the 3mi then that's about right. Main goal of negative splitting is not going out to hard so you can finish strong. The more you practice this the more you'll know what 'to hard' is at the beginning of a run.

Paying attention to HR isn't a necessity, its a tool that can help you learn your zones if you're still learning how to pace correctly.  I personally do not run with a HR monitor anymore except during races but I do track my splits on interval workouts and normally about midway through a long/threshold run to know when to pick up the pace.

Triathlete Nation ~ Texas!
Subject: RE: Evondo's Group - CLOSED!
Hey MG peeps... I was away from the computer all day yesterday (getting my truck fixed, shopping, shopping & then some more shopping) and then wrapped up the day with a visit to the movies to see Avatar with my son.  A very cool movie I must say!  I was a little reluctant to go see it, cause that is not typically the kind of movie that peaks my interest ~ except for the part that it had Marines in it!    It is a little long, but it doesn't drag, flows great and the visual fx's are simply amazing.

I got some catchin' up to do...  Happy Hump Day Y'all!
