A quick question, just how long is a "long" trainer ride for our more northerly friends?

I have 4-ish hours tomorrow on the trainer -- that's getting to be "long."

Because rides on the indoor trainer have no down hills, no stop lights, etc. you can generally apply a 1.3 factor to them. That is, a 100 min ride on trainer is "equivalent" to 130 minutes outside.

Enjoy that!

What do you use to entertain you? Movies? Music?

You are inspiring me to stretch out my rides on the CT. I will be off my bike for 2 weeks but hope to get more time on it over the winter. Having a big bike week in mid March will help me to motivate me to work hard on CT.

This morning I had my friend Erica as a training buddy (I bribed her with pancakes and sausage), which makes the time go by faster.  I really can't watch TV because I need to focus to keep my HR and cadence where its supposed to be.  I'm thinking about installing a sound system in the rec room where the trainers are so I have something to listen to.

More importantly, who's gonna watch it while riding the trainer? It's two hours this year - isn't it usually only an hour? Sweet!

I totally agree, kaburns1214 - that is why your "4 hour-ish" trainer rides really blow me away! I'm gonna have to find a much more interesting bike computer to stare at if I am ever going to do a ride on the trainer that long!

I feel like a slacker.  I didn't even make all the way to 2hrs today haha.  Good for you.  Looks like you are putting in a lot of time on that bike.  Should pay off down the road.

You couldn't pay me enough to stay on the drainer for 4 hours!  Kudos to you for having the amazing mental fortitude to do that.  My longest is about 2.5 hours, if I remember correctly.  2 hours is plenty long for me.  I've read the equation is closer to 1.5 -- and for me, that's about right.

Rjohnson, I just saw you posted that "I'm training for an Ironman video" the page before me.  My bad

I just completed an absolutely brutal 20 minute power test and I'm very pleased with my 5% improvement over 4 weeks.

OLD:216
NEW:227

At this point in the game, I'm right on schedule for where I want to be in July.

I hope everyone is getting a well needed opportunity over the holidays to each a ton and train a ton as well! Laughing

carlwithac - Awesome progression - congratulations!

You and I must be on a similar rotation - I just did my first FTP20 test yesterday (234) - definitely the toughest thing that I have done in a while - the best part was that I had my wife on her trainer next to me yelling at me the entire 20 minutes - I probably would have quit if it weren't for that. I swear, there was a moment when I thought I was going to fall off my bike and that she was about to punch me in the jaw. A quick shout out to all the husbands, wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, etc, etc, that don't just simply put up with this silliness that is Ironman training, but they actually push us to achieve our full potential. Thank goodness for them; I really don't know what we do to deserve them. For me, I keep telling my wife that if she were a better person she would have had a lot more choices... Laughing

This marks the beginning of 12 weeks of lactate threshold training - 3 sets of 3 weeks on with 1 week of recovery between each. Thankfully, I don't think I will have to do another FTP20 'til the end of this build! If I had another one in four weeks like you I would probably just sell my bike. I kid of course. sort of.

Keep it rolling everybody, and best to all for the holidays!
Safe travels, and safe training.

Nice job on your 20' testing. Those are mentally draining. Having my husband yell at me, I'd probably puke on him or scream back at him. I need peace and focus to do my best.

If you are like most folks you will see a bit of jump when you get outside as well.

I have an typical inside 20' test vs. outside and I gain about 20 watts after I'm outside for ~6 weeks. I'm hoping that doing that training camp in March will help me get my bump up in power sooner.

For last 4 years I can get up close to 200 (192-195) but never over...I hope finally this year to get up and over that 200 mark.

This is my year to be "serious" about training.  I have ambitious goals for IMLP and IMFL and if I want to achieve them, I need to put in the time now and build the aerobic base.  I may hate myself in a year, but right now I'm all in.

Nice....for us first day of snow, family is driving to Minnesota (1450 miles of fun) where it is 10-15 degrees colder than their normal freezing cold December.

Plus I have some tendinitis and my arthritis in my knee is acting up...same one as got scoped in June.

You'll be wishing for 10-15 degrees colder than normal come July.

Heck, I kinda wish it was 10-15 degrees colder NOW - at least then it might be snowing instead of this miserable rain... It will clear soon enough, but in the meantime I took the opportunity to give the bike a good cranks-off/brakes-off deep cleaning & repacked hubs/headset/pedals - even replaced my BB which I have been meaning to do for a few months. Should give me an extra 3~4 mph FOR SURE...

Hang in there KathyG - I am on a regular maintenance plan for tendinitis (achilles/shoulder) myself, and with my family history, probably only moments away from the onset of arthritis. What do you do to work through it (besides riding in the car for 20+ hours)?

mndymond - have a great time and keep us posted - you know all of us trapped back here on the mainland would be putting in EPICALLY HUGE training days if we were in Hawaii - don't let us down!

Oh well, rain jacket on - headed out the door.

When you're as fast as you are there's no need to be serious or ambitous in December.

20 minute tests are just brutal but they definitely put pain in perspective.  Mine are usually: 5' wow I don't think I can do this for 20', 5' Im positive that after 10' my legs will just stop, 5' wow, I'm almost there and my legs are still cranking, and 5' I'm about to puke/pass out but for some reason I keep going harder.

First EPICALLY HUGE training day in Maui. Haha. Kidding of course. Everything is going to be pretty basic over the next few weeks rather than gauntlet training days.

Just a 6km run and 2500m swim.

Prob going to get a bike tomorrow!

I feel that Alberta is very similar to Minnesota as far as climate goes...so I can feel your pain. Drive safe!
