I can't believe the gym was actually open today!  We got yet another foot of snow last night.  All the local schools were closed.  I checked the gym's website about cancellations, called the weather hotline to confirm that spin class was still being held, piled all 3 kids into the car and drove to the gym in less than ideal conditions.  We passed 2 cars on the way there.  Showed up at the gym to find out that the gym was open but NO SPIN CLASS.  I was totally bummed b/c I missed my usual spin class on Tuesday, too.  Oh well.  I ended up with a great workout anyway - tried to make the most of it since we had already motivated to get there!  I did my own made-up workout on a spin bike (which was really kind of fun!  might have to do that again!) and then ran for a little bit on the treadmill.  I guess this could qualify as my first (although mini) brick workout??  I feel good now and am so happy we rallied and went to the gym.  I have to post a picture of how much snow we have right now, it's crazy!  I'll try to do it later today...

BigDH - 2011-01-27 9:17 AM Got my yoga in yesterday. Of course I had to bribe myself with a beer. Sometimes that's what it takes.

Haha, love it.  I should try that sometime!

It is a great technique. I know at least one person who got hooked on running by rewarding himself after every run, with wings, or a beer, or a big mac. I mean not healthy stuff. Thing is there gets to be a sort of association built up between the happiness of a plate full of wings and running so that the good feeling you get from indulging in something unhealthy is transferred to something healthy and then you no longer need the wings or beer anymore and in fact it gets in the way of what you actually start to enjoy more, which is the working out.

seriously.

Sports Injury??
So...yesterday while I was running I started feeling a twinge in my left inguinal area. It got progressively worse today, iced it some...feels like a pulled muscle. Today was weight train...so didn't do that but planning on getting back on track tomorrow. Has anyone ever had a muscle type pain in this area? Bizarre.

Happy Friday all! how's the week going?

Mine has been a toss up and I haven't been around much due to a few busy days at work.

Seriously - the last 5k of my most of my long runs are done purely on the drive to get to Starbucks.  Such a good motivator!

Awesome job! So often it's just about the will to get out the door - people might start mistaking you for a triathlete! :D

It's definitely a good idea to rest a bit.  Sometime I get twinges that come and go and all I do is go to my next workout and see if it's still there. If it is, then time to listen to the body.  And if you still have pain when not running then definitely definitely rest.

It's a fine line of knowing what are just little aches and pains but won't prevent you from continuing with your training with some TLC like extra stretching or some strength training focus.  Or even sometimes it's a days rest and the thing has vanished.  I know quite randomly I'll have the occassional run where my shins tighten up.  One run it's annoying and gone the next.

Okay, let's see what I've done with my plan this week

Mon: Swim, bike (did swim on Wednesday)
Tues: Hilly run
Wed: Bike
Thurs: Tempo run, swim group
Fri: swim, yoga - Moving the swim - bike tonight
Sat: long run (between 24-28k)
Sun: bike, swim

Okay, so it looks like I'll be down a bike but i can do a little moving and be okay.  I won't swim today since i swam the last two days and yesterday was tough.  Looks like i'll be able to get in yoga today at lunch. (I love yoga - for me, it's an awesome but still tough antidote to all the tri training)

mylissahorrocks - 2011-01-26 10:14 PM Hi friends!
A new first for me today! Ran more or less the whole 3.5 on the treadmill! Excited to see how this works for me outdoors. New pace was 12.12. Great to have a breakthrough on the running.

Great job, gotta love the breakthrough.  I have no idea what my treadmill pace would be, I haven't been on one in over a year. Our gym mounted TVs on all treadmills and that keeps me away, I feel claustrophobic. I liked it better when I could look out the window.

So here's where I'm at so far this week:

Sunday - Swim 900m, Pwr 90 Sweat 1-2
Monday - Run/walk 30 min, Pwr 90 Sculpt 1-2

Tuesday - Cycle 30min, Pwr 90 Sweat 1-2, Ab ripper 100
Wed - Run/walk 30min, Pwr 90 Sculpt 1-2   Did nothing on Wednesday
Thursday - Cycle 25min, Swim 1200m, Pwr 90 Sweat 1-2, Ab ripper 100
        Swam 20min (700m), 20min cycle, 22 min(10 running) on treadmill, P90 Sculpt
Friday - Run/Walk 40min, Pwr 90 Sculpt 1-2
Saturday - Pwr 90 Sweat 1-2, Ab ripper 100

Found out on Wednesday that my hubby will be heading to Afghanistan Cry  He leaves on sunday for training for 2 weeks, he'll be home for a week and then gone for 5 months in a war zone. BLAHHHHHHH  So training on Wednesday just didn't happen. I had myself a little pity party and now I'm good. Had a great day training yesterday.

Today is my long run day I'm gonna try to get to the gym to do it cause there treadmills are much better than ours and they seem to make it easier on my knees.

I am so sorry.  Is there anything we can do for you or for him to make this time pass just a tiny bit easier? My prayers are with both of you.

Just a thought - Girl Scouts is sending GS cookies to troops. I could find out if we can choose where they go.

I could slap myself silly. I skipped my yoga yesterday because I was too tired. Now I am stiff and grumpy because I didn't sleep well. It only takes 10 minutes. Grrrrrr.

So sorry to hear that...  Way to go on your great training yesterday following news of your husband's deployment!  I hope that the training might be a nice healthy outlet over the next several months while you wait for your hubby to return safely!

Silly silly! Tricks are for kids...

Just got home from the gym. Went in to use the luxury treadmills for my long run today and my knees are thankful. Our old beast is not so gentle. My long run was 19 1:1 intervals run:walk and a cool down so no comparison to you all running for hours but it was by far the longest I've ever run and it felt great!!!

Thanks for all the hugs. I will definitely be using my training as a distraction while he is away and I'm gonna be one hot military wife by the time he gets home.

Keri, thanks for the cookie thoughts, that's a great program. I wonder if the Canadian Girl Scouts are doing the same thing??? We have a free postage program to the guys in theatre (that's what they call it when they are in a combat zone to make it sound less terrifying for the families I think Undecided).

Skipping my P90 workout today and going for dinner with hubby instead. Have a great night all.

Julie - nice long run!  I love love love reaching a new milestone! Congrats!  Don't worry about what everyone does or where they are - you just did something new just for you. It's amazing.  I still remember the first time i ever did 8k. I was training for 10k race with the Runnning Room and we did 10:1 ratio and i remember finishing that run and feeling like a million bucks, like I could conquer the world!  I wanted to walk up to people and say 'I just did 8k, what did you do?' Thankfully i didn't do that but the feeling was amazing and I hope you got some of that!

As for me i am up early for a crazy long run.  I know, I know it's January but I really wish it was april. So much better for running long.  My running buddy and I bribe ourselves with Starbucks at the end and I tell you that drives the last 5k - the thoughts of warm lattes dancing in our heads! hahaha

So, what's on tap for you?

Kristen: that is alot of snow!! Snow itself isn't so bad, but when it keeps coming then you're always shovelling and driving on slippery roads.  That's made my run yesterday pretty good: dry roads and sidewalks ... we have some crusty snow (nothing like you have)
