Master 7712 Orlando | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! There is a HM on feb 9 th that I really want to do. Those of you who were manatees this time last year may remember me discussing it then - it is a trail run through a wetlands park. Alligators line the run course ( although I didn't see any while running last time) and as the sun comes up you watch the birds ( water fowl, eagles etc) start to stir. It is a really laid back event and I really enjoyed participating last year. The problem is because of my foot issue I went 6+ weeks without running and have only just been giving the ok to ease back into things. I ran 5 miles yesterday, my longest run since starting back. So, the issues are: do I have enough time to get my mileage back up to HM levels and, if so, will the effort set me back with my recovery?I know no one can answer the latter question, I will discuss that more fully with the doctor when I get my orthotics in the next week or 2. So, I guess the real question for this forum is whether or not I should attempt getting my mileage back up so quickly. I looked at some HM plans and with 6 weeks to go to the race it seems I should be at about 8 miles for my long run. However, I had a great run base before the 6 week lay off and wonder if that base would allow me to accelerate my build up without causing injury.Anybody have experience with something like this? Is it totally stupid to go from 0 to HM in 8 weeks??? |

Master 7712 Orlando | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! KansasMom - 2012-12-30 10:43 AM I probably should follow your example and not be impatient, recognizing staying injury free is a priority. But, I'm an idiot about these things and tend to not practice what I preach. Glad there is at least one sane manatee around here cdban66 - 2012-12-30 9:53 AM I must have been delirious with the need for sleep last night. My logic last night went "I did the 25k hilly run a couple months ago and am better trained now and will be even better trained by the first of February, so 5 more miles and one more hour should be fine." My logic this morning, even after a poor night's sleep is something like, "20 miles is only 10k away from a marathon. Am I CRAZY???" So after church, I will pull the trigger on the 10 mile. I know I can do it. I will not suffer too badly, depending on weather conditions, and I will likely be able to run all but the steepest sections, based on my 10k trail performance this spring. If we are still in Kansas in 2014, I can tackle the 20 mile, and then in 2015 be ready to dive into the 50k they also run. I need to remember my long range plan and not get impatient. I need to be able to do all of this without injury. That's my first priority.KansasMom - 2012-12-30 12:58 AM TriAya - 2012-12-29 11:42 PM I corrected the link. I was having issues copying, and left a number off the end. This is the correct run, and if you scroll down, there is a description. In any case, I am leaning toward the 10 mile. The trail is described as rocky, rooty and hilly. It is single track and will likely have some snow and ice pack in spots. I would struggle to complete the 20, but with the 10 mile, I think I have a chance to finish MOP and maybe be competitive in my age group, if they even award for that.KansasMom - 2012-12-30 10:35 AM Here is the race I want to do on February 9th. I could signup for the 10 or the 20 mile. It looks tough. Help me decide. http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=495345 Sorry the link isn't clickable. I am working on my tablet. Your running has been *very* consistent the last couple months, but I would not sign up for a 20-mile trail run/hike unless I'd specifically been training for a marathon (and perhaps more specifically, an off-road marathon). The exception would be if (the link doesn't describe the race itself) I were going to treat it as an all-day fun hike and the race parameters allowed for that. Felicia, it looks like the 10 would fit well into current training. It does depend on your goals, but I think I'd go for the 10 and push it a bit. You have stated a goal of 50K at some point and your training has been building really well to move towards that in the future. Keep building and you'll find a 20 that fits in a little while from now. |

So here's the same answer I pretty much always give ... given that it's very unlikely, okay, pretty much impossible that you can train for it properly, so "racing" it is already out of the question, would you still like to participate? Why not do a run/walk ratio that's very generous on the walk side? What's the time limit on the race? I do remember it from last year I'd want to do it too! |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! Muskrat37 - 2012-12-30 11:47 PM Thanks for the advice... When you say effort, should I be wearing my heart rate monitor more often and trying to stay at a comfortable heart rate? (For me, about 155 bpm is not working that hard and equates to a sub 7:45 - 7:44 pace - 145 is really coasting and equates to an 8:15 - 8:30 pace..race pace for less than a 1/2 marathon is 165 and that was a 7:25 pace) I usually wear my HRM for races and based on those heart rates and my training run 1/2 mary where I kept it at 155 bpm the entire time and ran a 1:44 1/2 mary - my race plan for tomorrow is to keep my HR at 155 for the 1st half (which has a very slight elevation gain and 3 small(ish) hills..then bump it up a touch to 160 on the way back and if there is anything left in the tank I was going to push it to 165 for the last 3 miles. Does that sound like a decent race plan? I just made it up based on my training runs. Heh ... Salty is on her way to Whistler, but when she says "effort," she means EFFORT ... this is the lady who trains and races (very effectively) without so much as a watch. For real. If you're going to train by heart rate, do the field testing for LTHR. It's really simple if not easy, and that way you're structuring your training in metrics that are useful, and repeatable for gauging progress. You're definitely more than fit enough to do the testing, which takes all of half an hour As for the race ... technically, you should be running FASTER at the same heart rate, so if once again you remain at 155bpm, you should still hit your goal. But I agree that assessing at the halfway mark is a good idea--if you're on target for your goal and feeling okay, no need to step it up. If you're on target for your goal and feeling fantastic--time to step it up I know you do, so this is just another general reminder (from my days of yore in healthcare and health education): "Treat the patient, not the monitor." Always check in with yourself, with brutal honesty, regarding your effort levels and how you're feeling. |

I would like to participate, but I don't think I'd enjoy a heavy walk- run " race". There is a 10 k option, so maybe I'll just do that. Since my goal this year is to be injury free, I probably shouldn't wreck that goal 6 weeks into the year . As always, thanks for the input. One more thing, I guess you wouldnt think that running the ft lauderdale HM a week later would be any smarter ...amd723 - 2012-12-31 12:59 AM There is a HM on feb 9 th that I really want to do. Will do. Just curious but when you commute home do you travel southwest or southeast to get down under? England and Australia are basically the back of beyond from each other. |

I understand...When I was making changes in my life (both mental and physical) - I noticed that when I was around old friends and / or family, I went back to the old habits. After a while though, everyone finally understood that I was a triathlete (I still love saying that)....and that I would be bringing my running shoes to family functions and going for my runs whether they liked it or not. Hang in there...it will be over soon and then you can go back to being the athletic, sporty chic you are! |
