Here is the situation: I have about 400-500 to spend. I am debating on a garmin910xt or getting a wetsuit. I dont have enough to get them both obviously so trying to get some advice. Using the BT code a can get an xterra for 170. Any thoughts would be great.

What's your height and weight?

5'8 215

.

I have thought about renting a wetsuit just for HIM to see if its something I will continue to do. If I intend to do moe then i might purchase a wetsuit. There is aguy who got me into this sport and he said get the wetsuit. He said the watch was big and bulky. I dont want to get it and not use it due to size.

I tested out the 910XT last year and didn't find it bulky and my wrist is puny.  It's expensive though.  I use the 310XT and you can usually find pretty good deals on them since they are the older model.  If you don't care about swim metrics, this is a great way to go.

Nothing wrong with renting a wetsuit, just make sure you give yourself an extra week or two with it before your race to get used to it.  Depending on the rental fee, it MAY be worth it to buy your own.  I started with a cheap Nineteen for my first two years and migrated up once I knew I liked the sport.

I would like to track time and distance in the pool does the 310xt do this?

Powered by Jun - 2013-01-08 11:39 PM   So I went to see the doctor today and I was told I had shingles.  Have any of you experienced (or know of anyone) that has experienced shingles during training?  Did this affect your training?  Did you have to cut back?  Any help would be appreciated!

I had shingles in 2000 and my only advice is to "respect" them, they hurt and they suck.  Listen to your Doc and get on the Meds to stop them from spreading ASAP.  They are usually brought on by stress, so if your training load is adding to your stress, it is not going to help.  I got mine right after I switched jobs, started commuting a hour each way in traffic, listed the house, tried to keep my wife sane, and tried to keep my same training schedule!  Needless to say, I ended up stopping training completely for almost 2 months until we got the shingles under control and then had to work my way back very slowly.

"Balance" for me was kind of out of necessity.  I was perfectly happy being a runner (solely) and fairly good at it, for an old guy.  But the back started acted up on me and I decided that cross training was what I needed to keep the back happy.  So I started Tri training.

I expected to have issues on the bike, since I hadn't ridden one since my teens really.  But the running fitness has translated nicely and the biking has come along well.  I can see myself getting up past 20 mph (for Oly distance rides anyway) before too long.

But the swimming has been eye opening.  I used to work summers in the water and I'm very comfortable in the water.  I have the endurance but I'm dog slow - no offense to the dogs.  2:30/100.  That's been a surprise.  As a result I dislike swimming right now and never expected that.

Bill

ok.  send me your address.  i've got a wetsuit for you.  if it works out you can make a small donation to our local kids tri team and then get the 310 or whatever.

no it doesn't.  there are things like this or this if you really wanted them.  but i'd say the training and racing benefits of the 310 far outweigh that of a lap counter.  and counting laps and time with just a regular old watch gives me something else to do in the pool besides stare at the black line

I got some good news today so time to share a story.  Just after Ragnar in November I noticed a flutter in my chest while at work.  My coworkers ran an EKG and found "Uncontrolled A-Fib".  I was transported and my heart was shocked to put it back into a normal rhythm.  They sent me home right after but I was not cleared to work.

Step one was to be cleared for work, then cleared to run again.  After the barrage of tests, the cardiologist concluded TODAY that I am 100% cleared to do another Ironman.  This was after much discussion and questions about dropping dead.

I feel like I am starting completely over again and plan to build up slowly.  It may be a while before I have the confidence to BQ again but I am so excited to be able to get back out there.

There have been stories shared in these forums that have humbled and inspired me.  We all have our challenges, thought I should share one of mine.

Chet

Grats on the clearance.  Take it slow and pay attention to your body.  I look forward to hearing about your progression as you build back up.

They can definately be brought on by stress.  It is an activation of the chicken pox virus that resides in your nerve root after you have had chicken pox.  When the body's immune system drops it can activate.  It follows the skin distrubution that is assigned to that particular nerve.  Anit-viral medication like Acyclovir can help put it back in remission.  The pain can be intense and can be controlled by medications like Gabapentin or by patches like lidoderm.  You should definately take a look at the stressors in your life and your training to see if there is anything you can identify that may be contributing to the outbreak.  If you training is not to stressing you too much and you are getting enough recovery it might be OK.  If you are bent on training you may consider decreaseing your intensity some until it heals up.  It won't kill you but it really sucks.

I am a Physician Assistant so if you want any more information, send me your e-mail and I can send you some print outs from my resources.

No.  You can lap it to get a 100y interval, etc, but that's it.  If you want all the details on a pool swim (# of strokes, speed per 25,etc) you need the 910XT.  It also does a pretty good job in OWS, better than the 310XT.

Sent in my registration this morning for the Dances With Dirt 50K Race Series.  I couldn't resist this description, "The ultimate ultra challenge! By completing an ultramarathon at all four Dances with Dirt Locations, you have completed the World's Worst Ultra Series entitling you to the coveted Bloodied, Boned, Bruised & Burned belt buckle that will scare your running and non-running friends shitless when in your presence!"

My 2013 race schedule is shaping up like this:

Jan 26-Planet Adventure night time trail 1/2 marathon (Eagle Creek--Indianapolis)
Mar 9 - DWD Green Swamp 50k (in FL--hi Dad!!)
Apr 20 - Indiana Trail 50 miler (Chain O Lakes SP Albion, IN)
May 11 - DWD Gnaw Bone 50k (East of Bloomington, IN)
Jun 29 - Warsaw Optimists Sprint Triathlon
Jul 13 - DWD Devils Lake 50k (near Racine, WI)
Aug 4 - Steelhead 1/2 Ironman
Sep 7/8 - Run Woodstock (Trail 1/2 Marathon) (Pinkney, MI)
Sep 21 - DWD Hell 50k (Hell, MI)
Sep 29 - Tri the Creek Sprint Triathlon
Oct 26? - Haunted Hilly Half Marathon (on the roads---yuk)
Dec 7 - Tecumseh Trail Marathon (uh, maybe ;-) if I can still stand upright)
Dec 28 - The Huff 50k (Chain O Lakes SP)

Not many triathlons in the lineup, but I WILL be doing my first HIM, and having a lot of fun running the trails.  Full Ironman in 2014

Ok, can I be a buzz kill or the voice of reason?  Doing a 50K race 3 weeks  before your first HIM seems like a bit much.  Devils Lake is close to Madison and it's where I bike for IM training because of the nasty terrain.  Can't imagine doing a 50K in the Park and then hammering a HIM.  Is one a for fun event?  and I say that loosely!

My 2cents....

congrats on getting that all sorted out Chet.

I'd get the 310 and a wetsuit.

No racing. No fear of losing fitness. After a few years of doing this now, you know it comes back. But man last night was tough. 90 min of hard trainer riding.

New topic:

I've never been one to track my caloric intake. I eat, I work, I workout, I sleep. IM training was impossible to lose any weight or so its seemed. My problem though is that I've never really made it a focus. I'm 6 feet, and completed my IM's at 205 and 210. (My 2nd one was 5lbs heavier than 1st. Even though I said I would get lower) Cry

So this year, I've made it a RESOLUTION!! As of Sunday night. I've actually starting tracking calories and have been blown away so far.

ie.. I went for run on Sunday. 1 hr 20 min. 12.5k(7.8 miles) Based on my tests from last year @ 10k/hr I burn ~980 cal/hr. So I estimated I burned 1200 calories or so. We were heading over to Michelle's parents house for lunch after. I stopped at at a local coffee shop after the run, and grabbed a hot chocolate and a 12 grain bagel with light cream cheese. Didn't think anything of it, as I just had a long run and wanted to get something in prior to lunch.

Michelle got me all signed up with the 'Lose It' app that night,I did the caloric count on it later..... over 800 calories on my post run 'snack' before lunch!!!  Blown away. I am going to be wayyyy more cognisant of what goes in the mouth now. It may not be exact, but it definitely has me aware now.

No racing for me....  none in the near future either.  As far as balance - that has always been my problem - I tend to go overboard and burn out or injure myself.  Not working out all because of that is the quickest way to lose fitness in all disciplines.   I am mixing in more strength training this time and will be adding more stretching / yoga in to my routine in the next couple of weeks.  Regaining fitness just takes a bit a time, but it can be tougher mentally than physically....

It's easy to do.  I have tracked food intake before and probably will again soon, but it does take some time to get rolling...

Chet -- super scary and good news. So glad you got the clear. Listen to your body and be safe!!

No racing. And today I'm not even braving the elements. It sucks out there and I'm tending to indoor stuff ALL DAY LONG. So there. Self-imposed rest day.

The 910 sounds super cool, but as Fatty said, a bit overkill for glorified lap counting. The 310 does all sorts of fancy stuff for running and biking. I love mine. In the pool, I love the plain-old pace clock (analog). If you want to track time for longer sets and are worried you'll be off by a minute or more (happens to me above 500 yards when I'm out of shape and not sure how fast/not fast I'm capable of swimming), wear a Timex and just time yourself. You can get a good Timex watch for about $40 that will store your workout times if you want to recall them later for your logs. Some of us anal folks like to write all of that stuff down. (ME!!!)

I just got the Lose It app.  I've tracked food many times off and on.  It is the best way to lose weight for those of us who have stubborn pounds.  I have a goal to shed a few before I start my HIM training in Feb and I think I will drop some more once I get into those long workouts.  Sadly I am well aware of the calorie intake on those quick grab foods.  I check restaurant sites before eating out and travelling.  I really like to stick to the ones I know and can modify as I order like Panera, Chipolte, Starbucks, etc...  I have a mental list of specific go-to meals and snacks.

Good luck - it's a pain and tedious at times but effective.  :-)

I've tracked using Lost It, Fit Day or My Plate on and off, especially when I pork up.  If you are true to entering portion size it is very eye opening.    Don't forget to look at the nutritional profile (Fit Day is best at it) to see if you are getting your required nutrients.  It too can be a wake up call to add or eliminate certain things.

Great job taking the first step!

No racing this week but looking for a race and a plan!

I find that I feel stronger when I am tri training but my run times absolutely slow down.  I experimented with my last marathon however by adding a long bike to one of my "just mileage" runs.  The day of my race I felt fantastic but it wasn't quite enough to meet my race goal.  I am usually the one to say don't believe the hype and experiment with what works for you.

I agree that run fitness does not translate to bike fitness!Frown

I agree that run fitness does not translate to bike fitness!Frown

Chet

So far this year I have discovered that road biking fitness does not necessarily translate to mountain biking fitness either...

And fatty - that's some funny stuff right there!  Smile

Here is the situation: I have about 400-500 to spend. I am debating on a garmin910xt or getting a wetsuit. I dont have enough to get them both obviously so trying to get some advice. Using the BT code a can get an xterra for 170. Any thoughts would be great.

What's your height and weight?

5'8 215

ok.  send me your address.  i've got a wetsuit for you.  if it works out you can make a small donation to our local kids tri team and then get the 310 or whatever.

John this is awesome.

I've been able to eliminate those extra's and have been working on those stubborn pounds.  The hardest part was to step away from the calories in - calories out formula.  I can burn alot of calories during a two a day workouts (Swim in the morning, bike in the evening or bike in the morn, run in the pm, etc)  But just because I ran does not give me a free pass to eat junk calories.

I was stunned when I found my goal race weight written on a sticky note when I was looking at my training plan calendar for 2010.  What I found was that I am 20 pounds over where I was when I said I needed to lose 17.  Shocker.

good news I'm 10 pounds lighter than when I turned the corner 3 weeks ago.  I may be lighter than normal today thanks to a triple workout yesterday, but I'm going in the right direction.  The down side, I feel a shortage of energy during some workouts.  This is the off season to drop some weight and start some new habits.

Miles to go before I sleep.

I've never used Lose it but I have used Sparkpeople and the MyFItnessPal app.  Tracking helped me lose the lbs but what I think helped me to transform my diet and get me to eat healthier was purchasing the crop share last yr.  My diet instantly transformed to eating 75% vegetables because we had so many.  After eating that way all summer I couldn't go back to my old way of eating bc it made me feel sick.  GL.  It's amazing how fast those calories add up.

Chet- thanks for sharing your story. Super scary! So glad you're all clear.

Shingles are the worst.  I've had them three times.  Stress was by far the major contributor to the breakout.  Take it easy!

Jayne- That schedule!  Awesome!

Suzy,

The only thing I plan on hammering this summer is beer Wink.   Seriously though, all of my races are going to be slow and easy with the only goal being to finish in good form (upright and smiling).  It's all good!

I am loving the BT training / nutrition tracking.  I am similar to you 6 ft started the year at 198.6.  I log my workouts and my food into BT training log and try to keep a 1000 calorie deficit.  I am down to 190.8 today.  I might to increase my calorie goal as I actually seem to be losing wt too fast, but I don't want to bump it up to fast and then lose my momentum.  What I really love about the BT Training log is that since I weigh and log my wt daily it adjusts daily for my lower BMR as I lose weight.  It has a fairly sizable database of foods including all of the fast food junk that you get stuck with if you aren't careful.  That being said I have started to stash a balance bar in my truck for those times when I get super hungry and can't get to anything good.  Being prepared is the best way to beat the weight battle.  I am hoping to be down around 170 or less by Arpil.

Keep at it

Darin

Yoo-Hoo!  It's Wednesday!  Who is braving the elements to race this weekend?  Details please.

Let's talk balance.  we've had some good discussion about not wanting to give up one sport for fear of losing fitness while training for the other two.  Have you encountered that feeling?  how have you dealt with it? was it successful?

No racing here until May 12 - I just signed up for an HM on that day.  My goal is to break through the 1:40 barrier.

Balance is tough for me.   I want to increase my weekly run mileage from average of about 27k per week (last year's data) to 40 or 50k per week.    I also want to increase my bike base and intensity.  Finding the right balance between those two that doesn't cause my knees grief is the challenge.

Swimming is a non-issue because I still spend lots of my time focused on technique.

Chet: glad to hear that you only had one episode and I hope that it does not come back. My younger brother has been dealing with Afib for more than 10 years now and it is scary stuff.

Manny: listen to what your doc tells you and to the advice in previous responses.  Stress is the primary trigger.  I can pretty much predict when my wife is due for another round of shingles based on her stress level.  It will knock you down and you will need to rest.

Jayne: wow - you're an animal.  That is one busy schedule.
