Tracy- Love the poem (ALOT), loved the cake, and those pictures are great of your daughter!  Looks like some much fun (need to work on her aerodynamics though !)

Doug- Hydrate, Sodium, and Banana's (be proactive in this)--- I also think you can tweak your kick a little bit. Kick more or less (depending on what you do).

Trevor- Sweet job on the run.  That has to be a great confidence booster!   Volunteering-- Gives you a whole new light on racing!

John- I am proud of you.  Ironman Switzerland--- This is a dream that many people can only talk about--- You get to do it! SO VERY NEAT!

Edit for Suzy- How can I forget my older sister.  You looked great in your evening dress!  Hope you guys had a lot of fun!
Andy- Whether you realize it or not, you have taught your child to keep going!  (some use the expression HTFU- Me.... not a fan of that, but think what you will) You have motivated through your actions, and your change in lifestyle!  Kudo's to you!

What he said^^^^^^^! I cannot imagine climbing that much.  What kind of watts do you think you are putting out? For the flies, Deep Woods OFF!.  I use it on the trails when it is really humid and it works wonders.

So headed to swim with my old coach in whiteaps. I swear I was ready to kick the crap out of those waves.  Instead they kicked the crap out of me!  Mark's shoulder became my life jacket. Tomorrow night is our measured 1.2m swim and I am bound and determined to win the battle!

tahrens - 2009-08-03 1:07 PM Andy,  I think that is fantastic about your daughter wanting to race.  My oldest did a kids tri last summer and I was so proud of her.  Plus now I get a chance to brag.   She runs better than I do.   Both of her feet are off the ground!

Those are great pics - I am looking forward to my daughter's, but it will probably be next spring or so, as she still has some work to do on swimming and biking.  I hope that it introduces her to exercises that she enjoys!

Oh yeah - I didn't think you were old enough to have a kid that age.  From your pics, I thought you were in your very early twenties!

Aren't you sweet!  Those photos are obviously from FAR AWAY!  I'll be turning 34 in October.  Not as old as my old man hubby........but I still have an impressive cassette tape collection and can do a mean electric slide!

Awesome pics of your daughter.  I hope to have some to share in a few months.  Drew is going to do a dualthon in Sept.  I held off on the full tri since he is learning to swim but he is very close.  I think by the end of the summer he will be able to do 25/50m probably faster than me.  LOL

Steve - that looked like an awesome ride.  It must have been beautiful at the top.

So I finished my 12 mile run in the late afternoon - not my favorite time for working out.  But it was the best long run I've had in months.  The first 6 miles I felt awesome.  Legs were loose, HR low and I was running 10-20 sec. ahead of pace.  It was great.  I guess I really am stiff when I wake up.  Mentally I prefer early AM but my body said loud and clear that PM is much better.  It's always funny the things you discover while out training.

Sit up challenge question - it doesn't matter what days we choose as long as we follow the program right?  My core days are T, F and Sunday.  I did my test w/ Mr. Show Off and logged 80 before the burn started to set in.

sdalessio - 2009-08-03 7:14 AM Good morning group - I am having one of those Garfield Monday kind of days.  My swim was terrible this morning and my daughter seems to have picked up my son's strep.  So no camp for her and we are off to the doc.  But that always means I have to do my 12 mile run this afternoon in the heat once Tony gets home.  UGH!!!!!!!

"Best long run I've had in a long time."  Awesome!   Funny how thing work out like that huh.  Now I get to go sit on the trainer for a while UGH!!!!!!!

edit.... nope, doesn't matter what day's

Steve - Crazy climbing!  I wish that there were hills like that around here to play on. Sadly, I don't think I could even attempt them if I did ever visit you... I'd have to just pull off to the side and wait for your return.  Shear craziness!

Good luck!  I've spent some time in SC in the July/August.  I don't think I've ever been another place when my glasses fog up at 6am b/c of the steamy weather and I walk out the door sweating.

Hey Sam
Nice job on the run....I think you are going to give Tony a run for the money in that marathon!  When I did MCM it was 78F and humid at the start, probably way cooler than your run today!

I am really looking forward to tomorrow.  Tony and I are planning a bike trip through Middleburg, VA in a few weeks (horse and wine country).  I think we may stay at the B&B Sat. night then do a 62-64 mile ride through the countryside stopping at 4 wineries along the way.  :-)

So tomorrow I'm going to go drive the route I mapped to make sure it's safe and a fun ride.  Luckily we are only about an hour away and I am familiar with the area.  I am also looking forward to seeing if my favorite bakery/sandwich shop (The Upper Crust) is still in town.  I used to stop there ever Thurs. before lunch after I had taken my horses to the track and/or pool for some speedwork.  Funny how I used to do the horse version of triathlon (three day eventing) and now I do triathlons.  The similarities are uncanny.

They had the most delicious cookies and the names were great: cow puddles, road apples, etc...  And if I have a few cookies I won't feel guilty b/c I have a 5k race tomorrow evening.  One of my year's goals is to do a sub 25min 5K - not sure if its happening tomorrow but I'll give it a shot.  I think I need some more speedwork.  It's funny how my spring HIM training sucked the speed out of me.  I'm just getting some back now.

[/QUOTE

thanks - we are doing separate marathons this fall so we can compete sort of on time but not head to head.  I am not crazy about ever doing MCM.  The mass of people does not appeal to me.   I did something more interesting like a Mickey medal or better yet all the Disney medals.  We plan on the doing the Goofy challenge in 2011 and the 5K on friday so that gives you 4 medals for one weekend.  LOL

Anyways Tony is getting so much faster - he's been doing great on the running plan.  He is already in bed so he can get up early, early for his 14 miler tomorrow.

Ok Groupies, this is an official Role Call!!  No need to be shy, let's be accountable.

Who completed the start of the 200 Challenge today?  How many did you do in each of the 5 sets?

I upped it just a bit because I've really been wanting to get into a good calisthenics routine.  I started in week 2, day 1, column 3.  I'll be adding pull ups too:

200 Challenge - Week 2 Day 1 Column 3
Sit Ups: 21, 21, 15, 15, 20 = 92
Push Ups: 21, 21, 15, 15, 16 = 88
Squats: 50, 50 = 100
Calf Raises: 21, 21, 15, 15, 20 = 92

Tongue out  I have seriously lacked basic strength training this year.  I've been mostly doing endurance stuff - specifically biking.  I want to be able to do 200 of each.  I've been big into basic fitness stuff as long as I can remember, but this tri thing is a new addiction.  3 years ago I found myself overweight and had to fight hard against my love/hate relationship with fast food (I worked private ambulance service for 6 years - sitting point in an ambulance for 12 hours a day or working 24 hour shifts being out of the station for 20 hours can lead to unhealthy eating habits).

When I took a full time job as a firefighter in 2006 I stopped eating all the fast food and started to eat like a 'firefighter' - big meals and snacks throughout the day.  After gaining some size I new that I needed to make a change or I'd end up looking like several other guys on the dept.  I'm not knocking overweight people at all, I just didn't want to follow the path I was on and end up going too far down that road.  So I started a 12 week firefighter fitness competition.  In that 12 weeks I went to the extreme in switching to whole foods (not always organic) exercising 30-60 minutes a day and controlling size portions.  I lost 45 pounds and I've kept it off.

I don't have some mixed up perception of how I look, but do I have a few specific goals that I want to meet... I want to be back down to less than 9% body fat, I want the 8 pack abs.  I'm getting to where I want to be.  Have you seen the male model competition (not that I'm implying that you'd look, or that if you do look that it's wrong...or right or whatever ha), those boys are sculpted and ripped.  It's like the whole tri thing, if you want to be competitive, you've got to do the part.  You CAN race with a mountain bike and knobby tires, but we know that you'll have a lot better bike split if you go lightweight and aero!

**All in love - now bring on the real harrassment about me posing in the water - the guys on my department gave me some $hit!**

That is too funny.  The way you wrote it makes it seem like we are actually having a verbal conversation.  Funny!  But nah, I didn't look at the thread yet.

Awesome job with the weight loss. You know,  we both lost the same amount of weight and you look like that and I look like Fred Flintstone.  great.  Yeah I can't begin to tell you how important I think portion size is.

All in love is right!!!   The images are very cool man.  The one coming out of the water goes well with Dick's quote in your training blog title.  And it kinda looks like you are wearing a kilt in the one on the bottom left.  THAT would be cool.  No need for Body Glide, Assos, or anything!

You and Chet have some tough a$$ jobs.  Thanks for doing what you do! Hope you got all that insulation off your gear from that apartment fire.  The camaraderie down at the station is probably similar to the military... man i miss that.

Keep up the great work man.  You are really inspiring.  Oh... when looking at races overseas, I noticed the World Firefighter Championship's are at Roth next year.  Looked like 5 man teams.  Not sure if it's always at the same venue but that might be a cool long term goal for you.

14 miles down, 26 more to go this week Whee!

Glad to get that first one done so early.  It allready seems hot out.

LOL I came up on a family of deer and it was so dark I had to stop to make sure they were deer and not some strange pack of dogs or something else.

Compression socks are the greatest thing ever invented.

Edit:, lol also need to pay attention to my weight, got on the scale this morning and I was 5 lbs lighter than I normally am, not sure if that was all from the run or not, but something I should pay attention to I suppose.

JHagerman - 2009-08-03 10:23 PM Ok Groupies, this is an official Role Call!!

Doing mine tonight.

x2 - I will have to be a Tue - Thu - Wknd, as strength training on Mon-Wed in addition to two workouts those days is kicking my behind right now....

Hi:

I did 200 sit up challenge yesterday?  Are we supposed to be doing them in some sort of set? Did I miss something? Probably did.

I did about 100  regular crunches, 50 reverse, and 50 side - 25 on each side.

Hmm..

Question for everyone - and I hate to be negative.  Does anyone else hate their job?  I am trying to have a positive attitude but I cry every day coming to work and this morning I thought I was going to have a panic attack.  My throat closed up.  But then I prayed a lot and remembered what one of my coaches told me, "Positive Attitude Conquers Everything" and felt a little better.

Then when I got to work, my daily Dilbert cartoon read - well basically the message was "Are you aware that all jobs require you to do things you'd rather not do?  That's why they pay you."  "Perhaps your expectations are unrealistic."

Sooo that made me feel better.  And maybe right on time.  That Dilbert.  But where do we draw the line between doing things we'rd rather not do and crying every day coming to work? I hate having to pretend to be something I'm not for several hours a day.  And I do not like what I do - but that is why they pay me right?  I have in general nice coworkers except one of my bosses has been acting very upset with me for some reason which hopefully I can talk to him about today.

Anyway, I don't want to be a crybaby.  I feel like I must shut down emotionally every day when I come to work. I'm a legal secretary by the way.

Today I am trying to think, "This is just a place where I get to hang out with people fora few hours every day - and it's a great place to hang out." and put a smile on my face.

just writing and writing. . .

sdalessio - 2009-08-03 9:55 PM I am really looking forward to tomorrow.

That sounds like so much fun.  I would love to join you!  :-) Four wineries? Sounds great!  No biking while under the influence eh? BUI?  :-D

I hope you have a fantastic time!  Post pictures!

I did just an olympic and it sucked energy out of me - soooooooo strange. It was just an olympic.  I am sleeping lots and I feel drained.

The cookies sound great. But if I ate just a couple, I gain five pounds - no joke.  I envy people who can eat cookies and then just do a 5k and not gain weight. If I eat cookies, I have to work out for like four hours to not gain weight.

I have gone back and forth over the years.  I am basically an IT contractor.  about 10 years ago I joined a friend of mine in his small company, I am the VP and he is the President, but we are still a small company which means we both have to work full time on contracts + take the time to generate new buisiness when it's out there.

I am somewhere in the middle.  Job isn't always the most exciting thing in the world but I have plenty of time to train, no one really cares what time I get into work or leave so long as I make it to my meetings and make my gov't boss look good.  So I am pretty happy with it right now.

My opinion about work is ultimately you should be happy, if you aren't happy about some place where you spend the majority of your time and there is no option to make it better or benefit like more workout time, then maybe you should look for something else.

I sacrificed my lifting last night to get a swim warmup in before my run.Frown Had to do 5 miles on the TM and I have a hard time doing that w/ no warm up. So I did 1250yds then ran.  It was SO much better.  I thought about lifting afterwards but was a good girl and did my situps instead.  Does anyone else find the rep numbers weird?  I did each set as a different type of ab workout with the final max set as straight crunches. I've forgotten how hard V-ups and bicycle kick are.  WOW!!!

Thought of Steve this morning.  Movie at spin class was IM Canada!!!
